3 Called to Remember All Saint s Sunday (A representative of each family of those being memorialized is invited to come and sit in the front pews. As your loved one s name is read, you are invited to light a memorial candle.) Reader 1: Reader 2: Reader 1: Reader 2: Reader 1: Ever-living God, this day revives in us memories of loved ones who are present with us no more. What happiness we shared when they walked among us. What joy when, loving and being loved, we lived our lives together. Congregation: Their memory is a blessing forever. Months or years may have passed, and still we feel near to them. Our hearts yearn for them. Though the bitter grief has softened, a duller pain abides; for the place where once they stood is empty now. The links of life are broken, but the links of love and longing cannot break. Congregation: Their souls are bound up in ours forever. We see them now with the eye of memory, their faults forgiven, their virtues grown larger. So does goodness live, and weakness fade from sight. We remember them with gratitude and bless their names. Congregation: Their memory is a blessing forever. And we remember as well the members who but yesterday were part of our congregation and community. To all who cared for us and labored for all people, we pay tribute. May we prove worthy of carrying on the tradition of our faith, for now the task is ours. Congregation: Their souls are bound up in ours forever. Gracious and victorious God, we give you thanks that they now live and reign with you. Hear now, as we read the names of those for whom we give thanks this day. We name before you these who were connected to St. Luke s United Methodist Church of whose funeral service or memorial service was conducted by our clergy, and, who during the past twelve months, have departed from this life to join the Church Triumphant: (As each name is read, a representative of that family will step to the worship center and light a memorial candle.) 2

Most merciful God, we pause in silence to remember others from our families, from our communities, and from our networks of friends, who, during the past twelve months, have departed from this life to join the Church Triumphant. (A candle is lit during a moment of silence.) For the memory of these, O God, we give you thanks. Congregation: Their memory is a blessing forever. O God, Creator and Sustainer of the Universe, we pause in silence to remember those who have given their lives in service to their country. (A candle is lit during a moment of silence.) Is it wealth? Belongings? Faith? Many of us live with a scarcity mentality, worried that we must gather and hoard as much as possible, saving for some imagined rainy day. Or we focus on self-gratification. But the Bible promises both God s blessings and joy for those who choose to live another way. During today s service, we will take action to change our lives by setting five specific personal goals to work toward over the next year. We invite you to complete a Personal Goals and Commitment card and place it in your Bible for your personal reference in the coming year. One of these five commitments is your estimate of giving for the coming year. This week, you will be receiving an estimate of giving commitment sheet in the mail. On a practical level, we ask you to turn in your estimate of giving sheet so that our Finance Committee is able to set an accurate ministry budget for the coming year. This allows us to make the most of every dollar given to the church. On a personal level, the commitment sheet is an opportunity for you to spend time in prayer and reflection, considering what offering you would make to God through our church in the coming year. Please be watching for the mailing; then fill out the card and bring it with you to worship next Sunday, or return it to the church by mail.
