Oak St. Denton, TX Church Office Hours: Monday-Friday, 8:30am-3:30pm Sunday Schedule 9:30am Sunday School 10:30am Worship Service FROM OUR ASSOCIATE PASTOR The fifth question of the Study Catechism of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) asks, What does a Christian believe? The answer is All that is promised in the gospel. A summary is found in the Apostles Creed, which affirms the main content of the Christian faith. The gospel of Jesus Christ is a lot of ground to cover in living out the quest of all Christians to discover and then act upon what they believe. It is an exciting journey, a difficult task, a challenging course, and the way to life in Christ s name. In any big journey there is a first step when we wonder where do we even begin? Or farther along, we ask how do we continue, if we have stalled out or been at the journey for a long time? The good news is that we do not make this journey alone, but we do it in community, helping each other take the next step or bridge the gap from one season of learning and growing to the next stage. Experiencing and growing in the knowledge of all that is promised in the gospel of the good news of Jesus Christ requires nurture, instruction, failure, and success lived out in community - in the body of Christ. The Spring Guide of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church can be a good roadmap for the journey. With the Guide in hand, each of us might take a look at where we currently are and discern with God, where we believe the next steps will take us. Ask others where they are headed are they going to do mission work, find a Sunday school class, eat together at Super Wednesday, study the Bible, participate in worship through singing and ringing the bells, or retreat to learn and renew? Ask and then act, taking the next step, making the journey to the full measure of the gospel. Grace and peace, Lisa Patterson 2 Spring Guide 2019
3 WELCOME TO ST. ANDREW We proclaim that ALL people are created in the image of God and affirm that each person is a beloved child of God, worthy of God s love and grace. We welcome all, celebrating our differences while finding unity in Christ. No matter who you are or where you are on life s journey, you are welcome here.. Worship with us on Sundays at 10:30am. Experience a Reformed worship service with a chancel choir and organ. Children will even find a place in worship during A Time with Young Disciples and Children s Chapel. Sunday School for all ages is at 9:30am, with a nursery for infants and young children.. Gather with us mid-week during the Spring semester for Super Wednesday, a time to gather for a meal and activities for all ages.. Music is at the heart of St. Andrew s life and worship together. Find opportunities to use your musical gifts with our chancel choir, handbell choir, youth and children s choirs, and with St. Andrew Scenes Spectacular.. Youth and children will find their place in our active youth ministry for middle and high school students or our dynamic children s ministry for elementary and pre-school children. Programming for youth and children happens each Sunday and Wednesday.. You ll find a faith community that cares at St. Andrew. We offer opportunities to care for one another in tangible ways, such as providing meals for the sick and bereaved, serving in a prayer group, or meeting in a care-based environment with Stephen Ministry.. Serve with us by volunteering with Our Daily Bread, Treehouse, Kids Against Hunger, Hearts for Homes, Habitat for Humanity, Interfaith Ministries, HOPE, Inc., the Denton Community Food Center or join us on a mission trip!. Find important community resources here that share our facility like Our Daily Bread, Denton s community soup kitchen, The Children s Place, a preschool and kindergarten program, and Treehouse, an after school program for economically underprivileged families. HOW TO BECOME A MEMBER Membership at St. Andrew is the first step in what we consider a life-long process of discipleship, and we invite you to join us on this journey. Becoming a member affirms your faith in God and love for God s people. Membership is a commitment to this particular part of God s family, where we nurture growth in faith, worship, and service to others. We hope you find the simplicity of our membership process an engaging introduction to our life together. There are three steps to becoming a member of St. Andrew: 1. Fill out and turn in a New Member Information Form. You will find the forms on the Visitor Information table in the narthex. 2. Come to the parlor after the worship service. The Session, our governing body, formally receives new members at that time. We receive new members in one of the following ways: Letter of Transfer (can be requested by our church office), Reaffirmation of Faith, or Profession of Faith and Baptism. 3. Be welcomed in worship on a future Sunday when we recognize our new members. Or, attend the Presbyterian 101 class. Presbyterian 101 The Membership Committee offers the Presbyterian 101 Class for those who are new to St. Andrew and the Presbyterian Church or for those who are veterans of St. Andrew and the Presbyterian Church, but want to learn more about the history and theology of the Church and St. Andrew in particular. One hour sessions will begin at 9:15am in the Parlor on Sunday, February 10, 2019 and will continue each Sunday with the last session on March 17. Topics covered in the Presbyterian 101 Class will be announced prior to the first session on February Spring Guide 3

9 SUPER WEDNESDAY Prayers of the People Praise and Beseeching in the Same Breath Wednesdays during Lent March 6-April 17 Room 205 Leader: Lisa Patterson The people of God are called to pray. Prayer is a part of our common life together as we live out our baptism in caring for the world by following Christ into the places of suffering. We know that prayer, conversation with God, is an important part of our vocation as Christians, yet sometimes we struggle with the practice and don t know how to pray for ourselves, our loved ones who are facing real challenges, or the world. A group will meet during Lent to learn about the historical foundations of prayer, to name what to pray for, and to pray. Our prayers will then be woven into the prayers of the people during worship. This is a part of Lisa s Doctor of Ministry project so you will be asked to complete a simple survey or two in the process! Questions? Ask Lisa Patterson at lisa@saint-andrew.com. Final Super Wednesday Hymn Sing & Bell Ring April 24, 2019 Come sing with the children s choirs and handbell choir as we close out the Super Wednesday season Wednesday, April 24. Dinner at 5:30pm and hymns at 6:30pm. St. Andrew Scenes Spectacular! Each spring, St. Andrew s many talented singers, dancers, and actors take the stage in a musical theater/opera performance. VOLUNTEER WITH THE TREEHOUSE The Treehouse is St. Andrew s after school program for economically disadvantaged families. This program serves as a mission of St. Andrew to 14 children in Denton ISD. 10 MAKING A DIFFERENCE AT ST. ANDREW The Diaconate has several programs to provide spiritual, physical, and emotional support to St. Andrew members at birth, illness, hospitalization, and death. We also serve members who are homebound. These programs offer an opportunity for anyone to get involved in a rewarding service. Prayer Ministry Teams The Prayer Teams are made up of members of the congregation and the Diaconate. We pray for those who are suffering, grieving and/or stressed out from life s challenges. Each team prays for a week. We each take part of the prayer list, and each team member prays for some of those in need. Consider becoming a member of one of the teams. Contact Jan Hillman at jhillman3@verizon.net. Chancel Flowers After worship, chancel flowers are taken by deacons to homebound members and persons on the prayer list. If you know of someone in need, please contact Jan Hillman at or jhillman3@verizon.net. You can sign up to donate chancel flowers on the roster in the hallway outside of the church office. Homebound Visitations Deacons visit and/or send cards to homebound members who are no longer able to attend worship. Our goal is to help them feel connected to St. Andrew and know that they are a valued member of the congregation. For more information, please contact Jan Hillman at or jhillman3@verizon.net. Meal Train Mealtrain.com is an online tool to organize meal delivery for our members who are experiencing a challenging life event such as birth of a baby, illness, surgery, or death of a loved one. Please contact Doug Waring at or djwaring@ earthlink.net to sign up to take a meal.
