1 the story St. Thomas Episcopal Church January 2019 Volume 42, Issue 1 All are welcome here! St. Thomas Episcopal Church accepts all people and we commit to: Celebrate the Eucharist regularly Keep a personal and community discipline of prayer and study Proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ by promoting justice, peace, and love Nurture God s people as we grow in Christ Live with thanksgiving, wonder, and openness to God s love Restore all people to unity with God and each other St. Thomas Annual Meeting & Pitch-in Lunch Sunday, January 27 after worship St. Thomas will hold its annual meeting on January 27, We will begin with a pitch-in lunch after worship. Please sign up on the bulletin board to bring a main dish, side dish, dessert or drinks. After lunch, we will review the state of the church with reports from Senior Warden, Junior Warden, Search Committee and other committee chairs. We will elect vestry members and convention delegates. We will also approve the 2019 budget. All members over the age of 16 are considered voting members. Everyone is welcome to attend the meeting. To date, candidates for election to the vestry are Milly Kopecky (one-year term) and Tory Skopecek (two-year term). One additional vestry member to serve a two-year term and one to serve a three-year term would be ideal. If you have been considering serving the church in this way, please contact Robin Kares at (317) to express your interest. Vestry members must attend regularly and make a financial pledge yearly. John Dozier and Rachel Allen will stand for election as convention delegates. An alternate delegate is needed, and you may express an interest by contacting Robin. The 182 nd Convention will be held in Bloomington next November. WEATHER CLOSING INFORMATION Watch FOX59 (Channel 11) or WTHR (Channel 13) for future closing information for either St. Thomas Church or the St. Thomas Clinic. Both will have their own listings noted in case of closure. You may also check weather closings online at: or

2 Strengthen your faith. Page 2 CHURCH 101 Learn about the Episcopalian Faith This introduction to the beliefs and practices of the church will begin on Thursday, January 31, 2019 with an introductory meeting at St. Thomas at 7 p.m. This interactive class will meet each Thursday for 10 weeks, with February 14 th off, and finishing with a celebration on April 11, right before Holy Week. Those who wish may be baptized at Easter, and anyone who wishes may confirm or reaffirm their commitment at the Deanery-wide service in the spring (dates to be announced.) There will be a text for the class that is available from Amazon: Walk in Love: A Guide to Episcopal Beliefs and Practices by Scott Gunn and Melody Wilson Shobe. The book will provide background for each session, but will not be the only information. Think of it as a resource and not a text book. If you would like a book but you cannot afford one, please contact Robin Kares at the number below. The book is also available on Kindle, so if you have a shared library, that might be an economical way for each person in the family to have access to the book. We will also make use of the Book of Common Prayer if you would like to bring your own. The church can provide one for your use if you don t have one. There s no assignment for the first night! My hope is that these sessions will provide an opportunity to explore our own faith and beliefs in the context and the history of the church. It will also be a time to ask and answer questions and to share our experiences as well as our own faith journeys. Various leaders and voices give us an opportunity to hear and digest different perspectives. In Christ s Love, Robin Kares, Senior Warden (317) Make Church Ministry a 2019 Resolution Share Your Gifts St. Thomas is seeking more greeters, acolytes and readers for If you are interested in serving, please contact Cheryl Faust at mammyfaust@hotmail.com; We are also in need of more LEV ministers to take communion to those who can t make it to church. Diocesan training dates are available at indydio.org Coffee hosts are always needed after worship on Sundays. Is fellowship your gift? Perhaps picking up the left over bread at the Southport Panera on Sunday at 9:20 p.m. would fit into your schedule? Just leave the bread on the kitchen counter by Tuesday evening. Clinic volunteers bag up the bread for Clinic patients. St. Thomas volunteers serve the fourth Monday of the month at the Interchurch Food Pantry. Just sign up and show up. 4 Give thanks to the Lord for he is good. Page ANGEL TREE PARTY A Good Time Was Had By All! They say it takes a village. Well, we had a city helping to make this event memorable for our kids and our guests. Thanks to all of you who bought and beautifully wrapped gifts to be given from their incarcerated parent for our twenty angels. Thanks to our faithful and talented set up crew, Steve Faust and Phil McIver, Beth Stephens and Jan Skopecek and thanks to Milly Kopecky and others who helped dress the kids for the enactment of the Christmas Story. Thanks to Cynthia Dozier for beautifully playing the Christmas Carols. Thanks to Jan who beautifully read the Christmas Story and to all our Angels. Thanks to Grace and Tiffany who called the Bingo numbers and to Brie and Adam who assisted kids in making crafts to take home. Thanks to all the kitchen help, especially Chuck and April who cooked the meal, kept everything filled and cleaned up so the kitchen looked like new when they were done. Special thanks to those who delivered gifts to kids who did not attend the party. And, of course, many, many thanks to Carol for all her valuable assistance. Our guests from two families, very obviously had a good time and were very appreciative. Our own kids who attended also went home with prizes and gift bags and handmade ornaments and with smiles. Many thanks to all who made this possible. Blessings, Ann Kieffer, Angel Tree Coordinator Fr. Richard Halladay, former rector of St. Thomas, celebrated the Eucharist with us on Christmas Eve and left soon thereafter to drive to Nashville where he lives to celebrate Mass yet again. Richard and Jan are dear friends of St. Thomas. Another dear friend whom we have all come to know is Fr. Robert Giannini, former dean at Christ Church Cathedral. Fr. Giannini lives in Fishers. We at St. Thomas have been without a full-time priest for two and a half years. Fr. Halladay and Fr. Giannini have consistently driven to Franklin on alternate Sundays to lead us in worship. During this time St. Thomas has grown, both in numbers and spiritually. We are blessed, indeed. Thanks be to God! Blessings, Bonnie Johnson Dear Friends, We love all your support! Thank you! We are open 6 days a week which allows families to receive food twice a month. Our all-volunteer staff works hard to serve everyone who comes through our doors. These volunteers* also seek and sort donated food from drives, local stores, food banks, churches and other sources. Your donations are the final piece that makes this all possible. Blessings, Carol Phipps Interchurch Food Pantry of Johnson County *St. Thomas volunteers work on the fourth Monday of the month at the Food Pantry. Just show up and they will show you what to do.

SAFEGUARDING Thanks to everyone who completed their Safeguarding Training in 2018! This training teaches us best practices for keeping our children safe and adults safe from harassment and exploitation, as well. We reached the 80% compliance mark for most of the required courses. However, many have not yet taken the newest modules: Preventing Bullying (66% completion) and Social Media (only 27% completion.) Of course, the ultimate goal is 100% for all courses. If you are not caught up, please do so as soon as possible. The Diocese checks compliance this month. All employees, Vestry members, key holders and those working in children ministries are required by the Diocese to take training every three years. How do you know when your three years are up? Call or the office and ask! If you have any questions, contact Carol in the office Monday-Thursday, 9am to 2pm: stthomasepis@aol.com, St. Thomas Refers Post-Breast Cancer Patients The collaborative grant with Johnson County Health Department for supportive services postbreast cancer diagnosis was approved for $7,500.
