2 The Shower Ministry Items needed right now Men s deodorant, men s underwear size M, L, & XL, and travel size body powder. We will keep you posted as the inventory fluctuates. Thank you for all your support of this ministry. Weekenders: And that's a wrap! Thanks to some early shopping, we have all of the needed items for the last packing of the school year. Working together, we have successfully filled 30 backpacks each week for children who are food insecure. I see students getting similar food distributions at my school each Friday and it is very apparent just how much it means to them. None of this would be possible without all of your contributions of items for the backpacks and the time that it takes to pack them. Enjoy your summer! If you happen to see one of our regular items on sale this summer, feel free to pick things up. It will be September before you know it and we will be sending backpacks home again. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Nichols M. 5 During Pride Month, we would like to celebrate the contributions of LGBTQIA+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer or Questioning, Intersex, and Asexual+) persons to our world. Where would we be without?... Music: Leonard Bernstein (born Louis), 8/28/18-10/14/90, was known all over the world as an orchestra director, composer, music lecturer, and pianist. He directed the New York Philharmonic for many years and conducted concerts with most of the world s leading orchestras. Music he composed includes Peter Pan, Candide, Wonderful Town, On the Town, and his widely acclaimed work, West Side Story. Bernstein married Felicia Montealegre in 1951, and together they had three children. In the book, The Leonard Bernstein Letters, released in 2013, his wife revealed his homosexuality. Sports: Augustus Richard (Gus) Kenworthy, 10/1/91- A resident of Telluride, Colorado, Gus Kenworthy is a British-born freestyle skier, competing in slope style and the half pipe. He won the silver medal in men s freestyle skiing at the 2014 winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. The following year, Kenworthy made public on Twitter that he is gay. ESPN followed that announcement with the creation of a video in-depth presentation of Kenworthy s life and career to date. Happy Pride! June is Pride Month, and we at Golden Hill will be recognizing our diversity by celebrating this together as a congregation during the services on June 4 th. You may have seen the symbol of Gay Pride, the Rainbow Flag, but do you know what the 6 colors of the flag stand for? According to Gilbert Baker (the flag s originator), red represents life, orange stands for healing, and yellow for the sun, while green represents nature, blue is for art, and violet stands for spirit. Together, the colors of the freedom flag stand for unity. Should you spot a flag, please offer a prayer that ALL God s children LGBTQIA+ (gay, lesbian, bisexual, trans, queer/questioning, intersex, asexual) may come to love, respect and value each other. Do you know anyone who is gay? Perhaps a co-worker? A neighbor? A friend? A church member? Statistics tell us that approximately 10% of the population is gay. If you don t feel you personally know anyone who is gay you might recognize some famous gay people, such as; Michelangelo (artist) Leonardo da Vinci (scientist), Cole Porter and Elton John (composers), Neil Patrick Harris (actor), Rita May Brown (author), and Martina Navratilova (athlete) (partial source: Good Catch! 1995). If you hear or read about LGBTQIA+ issues, please lift up a prayer for a gay teen who might be contemplating suicide, for the suicide rate for gay teens is 3 times that of their straight contemporaries. With God s help, let us work together toward a world in which everyone can live knowing they are loved, accepted, and celebrated, not only in June, but always. Written by Sharon Offeney on behalf of the Open and Affirming Task Force
