1 N E W B E T H E S D A B A P T I S T C H U R C H The Lamplighter Volume 145 Issue 4 In a recent edition of his daily newsletter, Rick Warren (Pastor of Saddleback Church in California) wrote: Sometimes I don t feel like being nice to everyone. I don t feel like doing the unselfish thing. I want to just lie on the couch and watch TV. I don t want to do one more thing today. I don t want to handle another problem. But just because I don t feel like it doesn t mean I shouldn t do it. Sometimes I feel that way; in fact, there are sometimes we all feel that way! Susan recently had the flu. After several days, the flu symptoms went away; however, the feelings of fatigue and tiredness lingered on. She had no energy and she just wanted to rest. Her lack of energy caused both of us to become really lazy for several nights the past few weeks. We didn t feel like doing much of anything; we just wanted to lie on the couch and watch TV! Our Christian walk can face times like that. Sometimes we don t feel like praying or reading our Bibles or going to church. But we still do it, I hope! I ve found that if the only time I pray is when I feel like it, the Devil makes sure I never feel like it. If the only time I read my Bible is when I feel like it, the Devil makes sure I never feel like it. If the only time I go to church is when I feel like it, the Devil makes sure I never feel like it. Spiritual maturity is when you live your life by your commitments, not by your feelings. The difference between successful people and unsuccessful people is that successful people are willing to do what unsuccessful people don t feel like doing. They develop habits. They stay committed. You don t get to the Olympics because you feel like it. You get to the Olympics by hours and hours of training that you didn t feel like doing. You don t become a master musician without hours and hours of rehearsal that you probably didn t feel like doing all the time. In the same way, you don t become a godly man or woman by simply doing what you feel like doing. Godly men and women choose to develop the habits that produce godliness in their lives. God always desires the best from us. Let s give Him our best! NASCAR Race Weekend April 20 - April 21 Central Virginia Raceway Ministries (CVRM) has been given the unique opportunity once again to minister through RIR guest services to over 100,000 race fans during the upcoming April weekend. Many volunteers are needed to serve as ambassadors of goodwill, not just to provide race fans with the practical information about the raceway complex and services, but most importantly to be a witness of Christ s love by offering them a chance to sit down in our tent to enjoy a cold drink and homemade cookies. WANTED!! COOKIES FOR THE RACEWAY MINISTRY We invite you to participate in the Raceway Ministry by baking homemade cookies and bag them in small clear zip lock plastic bags with 2-3 medium sized cookies each. We will attach labels (Compliments of New Bethesda Baptist Church) to the baggies at the church. Please have your cookies to the church by April 18. 5 MUSIC NOTES There s a song in the air! Thank you to EVERYONE who had a part in presenting the Palm Sunday Cantata!! A special thank you to The Broken Road Farm of Dillwyn who brought Jewels the Donkey to lead our processional. God was truly glorified through the efforts of many on that day, and throughout the many months of preparation. The Music Ministry Team has been hard at work planning for the future, with both short-term and longterm goals. We ve been discussing our vision and mission to see how we might step out of our box to reach others through music. We are hoping to share our songs in the local community in the near future, so we will keep you informed of those opportunities as they arise. We are planning on participating in a Hymn Sing at Hillcrest Baptist on Thursday, April 5 at 10:00 am with lunch to follow. Anyone in the church who is interested may attend. Please let me know by April 3 if you would like to participate. Many of our choir will be participating in a Choral Workshop on Saturday, April 21 led by Mark Hayes, an international composer, arranger and pianist. It is held at Northside Baptist, and we will rehearse six pieces under his direction. At 7:00 pm on that evening, the mass choir, composed of musicians from many local churches, will present a concert which is free to the public and ALL of you are welcome to attend!! Some of our pianists will also be involved in a piano improvisation workshop that Mark Hayes will present on the Friday night preceding the choir workshop. We are all looking forward to sharing music with our New Bethesda family that we will be learning during this exciting weekend. We hope to see you at the concert on Saturday, April 21 at 7:00 pm! In His Service, 9019 Student Ministry April 13 and 14 our youth group has the opportunity to participate with other area youth groups in the Great Day of Service. The event will be hosted at Walnut Grove Baptist Church. Groups will meet at Walnut Grove Friday night and be divided into service groups and experience worship together. Groups will return to Walnut Grove Saturday morning for breakfast, a brief devo, then will be sent by their service groups to various mission projects in our area. The event will conclude at Walnut Grove with dinner and worship. Cost is only $5 upon arrival. May 12 is Faith Night at the Richmond Flying Squirrels baseball game. Game time is 6pm. Mark your calendars and be on the lookout for ticket info! We ve received good responses to our two camps this summer Impact VA and Fusion. We have 10 students signed up for Impact and 7 signed up for Fusion great job everyone! If you re unfamiliar with our camps, Impact VA is a missions-based camp where our youth will be involved in mission projects throughout the week. Our Impact week is June Fusion is our summer camp where our youth will experience worship in a large group setting and throughout the week will spend time divided into small groups. It s a fun week that is also spiritually engaging! Fusion is July I hope that our youth ministry can continue to be a light in a sometimes dark world. I pray that you will find our youth ministry engaging and helpful as you seek to live our faith in Christ. God calls us to walk as children of Light. (Ephesians 5:8) Let s shine together through our youth ministry!
