February 2017 From the letter to the Hebrews: Since we for our part are surrounded by this cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every encumbrance of sin which clings to us and persevere in running the race which lies ahead. (Hebrews 12:1) You have been running the Christian race for miles, even for years of your life. Sometimes you were the hare and sometimes the tortoise, but nonetheless, you ve run the race. Now you may be tempted to stop running. The love of Christ that impelled you for so long seems weaker. You don t know what happened, but you re slowing almost to a stop. You feel as if you can t take another step. What can you do to keep on running? In this month of February, keep your eyes fixed on Jesus, Who inspires and perfects our faith. Lift your eyes to Jesus on the cross and to Jesus on the throne. Jesus will draw you to Himself. Fear is useless. What we need is to trust Him. He will give us the ability to run once again and not to grow weary. Jesus is the Source of our strength, we have everything in Him. Taken from One Bread, One Body Publication, Presentation Ministries, 3230 McHenry Ave. Cincinnati, OH The Venerable Father Michael J. McGivney

KNIGHT NEWS, Council February 2017 Page 2 Worthy Knights Another shout out to the leaders of our Parish Youth Mass and #AfterMass programs. It is amazing to see the continued growth, development and evolution of this program which includes a 60 strong contingent of Adult Parishioners and youth leadership from both Brother Knight D Arcy Murphy and my daughter Molly Fisher. Our February meeting will be preceded by a Halton Crime Stoppers presentation. I encourage everyone to join with us at 7:30 pm on Tuesday night and then stick around for what promises to be one of the shortest meetings our Council has ever held. Both myself, your Grand Knight, and our Worthy Deputy Grand Knight, Rory Facca, will be missing from action. Our Worthy Chancellor, Tony Zimbalatti, who is articulate, direct and incredibly efficient will be hosting the meeting. I wish to send a special thank you to the organizers of the Knight of Columbus Games Night at Council 3881, Brother Andrew Eckstein, Henry Thissen and Grand Knight Giuseppe Peritore. They shifted the time of their regular monthly Gaming event to open the doors to us, the members of Council 14446, to participate. While a bit rusty in my card playing, both Brother Frank D Aurora and myself tried our hand at Euchre and held our own before being outplayed by Art and George from Council The fraternity was sincerely appreciated and hopefully we can have other Knights join us for Poker and Euchre if they consider opening their doors to us again in the future. What can we say about our February Valentines Dance? Those who participated were given multiple gifts: an amazing room, a table filled with incredible Auction items, a meal that was both delicious and filling, fraternity with family, friends and new acquaintances, harmonious and inspiring performances from Blistered Fingers and Freedom Train. The dance floor was never empty. Don t miss the next event from our seasoned team of party planners, led by Past Grand Knight, Rob Castonguay and his wife Teresa. Look for pictures later in this Newsletter. Another special thank is due to Brigitte Hughes, our Catholic Woman s League President, who organized and hosted a screening of the movie, Mother Teresa: The Legacy with special guest host and award winning cinematographer, Ann Petrie, the film s Producer at Mary Mother of God church on February 19 th. The event was a huge success, with Ann answering questions about her experience travelling and producing the movie with Saint Teresa, whom she still affectionately calls Mother.

KNIGHT NEWS, Council February 2017 Page 3 On the personal side, my life is still rather busy with both work and volunteer activities. On the service front, my wife Margie and I have just completed the Marriage Preparation course at Mary Mother of God with 6 couples who will be getting married at MMOG within the next year. Special thanks to the three sets of graduate couples who joined us to share their marriage stories and recommendations. If you see any of the following folks joining us for Mass, (yes, they are all committed to joining us for Mass), please say both hello and congratulations! details; Father rarely asks us for help, so this is a chance for us to aid him by volunteering our time to address his explicit needs. Bruno Santia has suggested that we support the Youth programs at Mary Mother of God, by supplying portfolios that are branded with the Knights of Columbus logo. These could then be used by both the youth band for music and the youth participants. Bruno suggested that we let our Parish and the youth know that we support the youth program through our prayers, our financial assistance and this type of visible support. Vivat Jesus David Fisher Grand Knight Brother Knights, Alain Cayer, our Ontario State Deputy, held a training session in Oakville on February 25 th, at Marian Hall. Thanks to our State Deputy for sharing his time with us to bolster our recruiting efforts. We are half way through our Fraternal Year, our council has been very busy and we should be very proud of what we've accomplished so far. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you Brother Knights who have worked so hard in supporting our Council's successful events and programs. Please consider joining in our upcoming events: All Star Reading Program has started up; Brother Joe Luciani is looking for extra volunteers Valentine's Day Dinner & Dance - Feb 11 Let's all please help out and be an active Knight of our Council! Please ask a brother Knight to reach out to one of our Program Directors to ask how they can help: Church Programs Angelo Spadafora Community Programs Tony Saturno Council Programs Ron Civitarese Family Programs Steve Germann Youth Programs Mario Peluso Pro-Life Programs Iskandar Massis Ideas and upcoming opportunities: Father John has asked for the assistance of the members of the Knights of Columbus at Mary Mother of God to help stain the fence at the Rectory. Grab a brush and stay tuned for more The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace. Vivat Jesus Rory Facca Deputy Grand Knight

The Order is consecrated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Order is unequivocal in its loyalty to the Pope, the Vicar of Christ on earth. It is firmly committed to the protection of human life, from conception to natural death, and to the preservation and defense of the family. 10 KNIGHT NEWS, Council February 2017 Page Look for highlights in the Oakville Beaver, Snapd, or the Halton Insider (Cogeco). Yes, it was a slam dunk! The 2017 Oakville Knights of Columbus Championship took place on Saturday, January 28th at St. Thomas Aquinas High. 138 athletes from seventeen Oakville Catholic Elementary schools and three high schools from ages 9-14 took part. All seven of our schools participated. The highlights included appearances and words of wisdom from Mayor Rob Burton, MP John Oliver, MPP Kevin Flynn, and Superintendent of Education Tim Overholt. The top two winners went on to the District Finals on Saturday, February 4th, at Corpus Christie High in Burlington. This year was the first of many Basketball Free Throw ventures with Council 3881, under their Chairman Andrew Eckstein, and Steve Montague who printed off all the Participation and winner certificates with help from a couple pretty ladies. On January 30 th, our team helped out with the Special Olympics Championship at St. Joan of Arc school and St. Paul s Church Gym. The athletes were provided with pizza after the winners were awarded medals. Thanks to all the brothers who came out to help at the schools, tournament,, and District Championship. We all looked good in our new shirts. Frank D Aurora Mario Peluso Basketball Free Throw Co-Chairman

KNIGHT NEWS, Council February 2017 Page Valentine s Day Dinner & Dance Brothers Your 2017 Dance Committee is pleased to provide you with the preliminary results of our 2017 Family & Friends Valentines Dance. We had a sold out crowd of 216 individuals which provided revenue of $13,800 and an additional $865 was raised from the 50/50 draw sales bringing the total dance revenue to $14,655. After expenses of $13, the Dance provided a profit of $1, for our Council. The Silent Auction and Donations to our Charity Corporation North Oakville Catholic Knights Charities came to a total of$7,963. This gives us a grand total of $ 9, raised, so far! These are preliminary results and are subject to change. Deposits and Expenses still need final reconciliation. We hope to have the final results at the March Executive Meeting. We are both pleased and proud with both the financial success and feedback from those who attended our event. We added a lot of flare this year, roses for every lady, hearts and center pieces on the table, best prime rib meal, and live entertainment. Hopefully this will bring in more ticket sales and donations for our Family & Friends 2018 Valentines Dance February Vivat Jesus! Brother Rob Castonguay-Committee Chairman

KNIGHT NEWS, Council February 2017 Page Annual Knights of Columbus Charity Raffle Dear Brother Knights and Friends, We are pleased to announce that this year s lottery will support Ontario to help promote a healthy and active lifestyle through sport to improve the wellbeing of individuals with an intellectual disability. We will also continue to support the Arthritis Society, to help fund research to cure this horrible and debilitating condition. This year there are 500 prizes with a grand prize of $200,000 cash!!! Other prizes include: cash prizes, 2017 Ford Mustang convertible, 2017 Chevrolet Colorado 4x4 Crew Cab and a 2017 Chevrolet Sonic as well as ten 2017 Jena E- bikes. That s a total of over $500,000 in prizes! Tickets are only $5 each and the draw will take place on July 13th 2017, at Best Western Hotel by Carmen's in Hamilton. Our Council has been issued books of tickets, for our membership to sell. A book contains 10 tickets for value of $50.00 A portion of the ticket sales are returned to our council, to support our charities and good works. Again, this year are asking for members to sell tickets for this worthy cause. Family, friends and co-workers are the usual buyers, but some members are reluctant to sell to them, and we respect that. However, explaining that the charities are the recipients, not the Knights, may help in selling tickets. Your Council Executive ask that you please sell at least one book of 10 tickets. To make it even easier a book of tickets can be delivered to your door and paid via credit card for a small administration fee. You can then just drop off the ticket stubs in our Knights mailbox at the back of Mary Mother of God church. Please arrange to receive your tickets. Rob Castonguay RobCastonguay@hotmail.com Thank you for your support.

KNIGHT NEWS, Council February 2017 Page January Prayer List Please pray for the following Brothers and family members who are ill or infirmed: Deacon Jim Whittaker, Brother Manuel Medeiros, Brother Milt Cowan, and Brother Pio Gomes. Please continue to pray for the following individuals: Anthony Salvatore; Lady Janice Whittaker, and Brother Danny Foran. ON THEIR BEHALF WE OFFER THE FOLLOWING PRAYER O God, You who are the only source of health and healing, the Spirit of calm and the central peace of this universe, grant to them such a consciousness of Your indwelling and surrounding presence that they may permit You to give them health and strength and especially peace at this time, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen Please pray for the following Brothers and family members, who have recently passed away: Erna Kupferschmidt, passed away peacefully on May 20, 2016, beloved mother of SK Gerry Kupferschmidt, PGK. ON THEIR BEHALF WE OFFER THE FOLLOWING PRAYER Heavenly Father, look with love on these souls, and receive them into your heavenly kingdom. Bless them and let them live with you forever. Father, we ask this grace through Christ our Lord. Amen! Information regarding prayers should be directed to Grand Knight David Fisher at grandknight@kofc14446.ca (905) NOTE: Names have been removed from our active prayer list after appearing in two successive newsletters. Should prayers still be required for these individuals, please contact the Grand Knight and they will be included in future issues. Also, our Newsletter Editor will be checking our website at: for any new Prayer Requests each month to include in this publication. The website displays these prayer requests for up to one month and then they are hidden from public view. We ask that, before you submit prayer requests identifying individuals with health conditions, you obtain their consent and make sure that they are aware and okay with you posting something online that will be visible and discoverable to the public. Before posting your Prayer Requests, please consider the following: 1. Less is best - post only general and not specific information 2. DO NOT publish detailed, health related prayer concerns 3. Consider this, if you were ill or in the hospital, how much detail would you want released about your condition?
