2 PASTOR S COLUMN & CONGREGATION NEWS FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH Out the Study Window Rev. Richard E. Miller BEING SALT & LIGHT You are the salt of the earth... You are the light of the world... Matthew 5:13a-14a I am not into genealogy, but some family history has managed to find a resting place in my consciousness. I am told I had two distant relatives that fought in the Civil War. They were brothers. One was a doctor who spent the war piecing back together torn and battered bodies. The other brother was a pastor who spent the war trying to mend souls. After the war both continued in their professions. The doctor traveled to the north and built up an established practice. The other brother headed west and became an evangelist and circuit rider out of Waterloo, Iowa. Both men continued to touch bodies and souls until they died. If you talk with anyone in my wife s family, they all can tell you about how the family roots trace back to Gouverneur, New York. If you go even further into her family s past, you can trace roots back to Abraham Lincoln s family. What all of the individuals above had in common is that they were committed. They were committed to their professions. They were committed to the people around them. They were committed to the love of Christ. Because of their commitment, they all made a difference in the lives they touched and they are all remembered because of their commitment. Their commitment provided salt and light to their communities and to those of us who still remember and are influenced by them. How about you? Are you totally committed, to anyone or to anything? It seems we are living in a time when people are reluctant to make commitments. It seems so much safer to leave one s options open, be a bit tentative, cautious, measured. Have that back door escape clause. But, if we really want a good life, a good family, good friends, a good world to live in, then commitment to working at making it good is required. The same is true about our commitment to God and the Church. When we hold fast to building a committed ministry that points to Christ that is when we begin to feel and experience God s grace. God s grace is always amazing, because it opens us up to love of neighbor and self in new ways. God s grace sets us free to fully enjoy life without fear of the disappointments, set-backs or failures that will come. God s grace helps us take risks. Wouldn t it be nice to be no longer concerned about securing back door escape hatches and start grabbing hold of the front door of God s grace that is always before us? Soon we will be starting a new worship service and Sunday morning schedule, on Sunday, April 7 to be exact. I don t expect you to change your commitments if you are already worshipping at a favorite time. But if you are not worshipping regularly, then now is the time to check out what is new. If you are a regular worshiper, great! Continue your commitment to God, but also ask yourself who do I know that needs this more than me? Then invite them. You are the salt of the earth...you are the light of the world... Join Us for Breakfast on April 7! That s right, it s breakfast served from 9:00 to 10:30 AM in Fellowship Hall on Sunday, April 7. Enjoy some delicious hot pancakes, sausage, fruit and choice of beverages. The cost is adults $2; children (10 and under) $1. Plan to come after the first service or before attending the new service! This is one of many great ideas that came out of the leadership brainstorming workshops - hosting a monthly fellowship breakfast! The Congregational Development & Fellowship Committee (CDF) has scheduled three breakfasts. The first is on April 7, with others being planned for May & June. We ll see you there! New Sunday Service Times Begin April 7, :45 AM - Traditional Service 10:00 AM - New Celebration Service (shorter service time of 40 minutes, contemporary music, Sacrament of Holy Communion) 11:00 AM - Traditional Service More detailed and descriptive information about the new service at 10:00 AM will be provided in future bulletin announcements and in the April newsletter. One Great Hour of Sharing Offering: Sharing resources, changing lives Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God. Hebrews 13:16 Over the past few years, your gifts have enabled the Presbyterian Hunger Program, Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, and Self-Development of People share the joy experienced in Christ. These gifts have helped rebuild a fishing community left in tatters in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, provided food and shelter to those affected by the devastating earthquake in Haiti, and fueled our ability to provide peace and hope to those touched by the recent shootings in Tucson, Arizona; Aurora, Colorado; and Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Many of us enjoy the abundance of God s blessings, but by living an open-handed life and sharing these blessings with others, we can offer an outward sign of thanksgiving for the presence of Christ in our lives while bringing joy to God and to our sisters and brothers.the One Great Hour of Sharing special offering is about sharing God s love and our resources with those in need. This offering is accepted throughout the Lenten season thought Easter Sunday. 2 THE BROADCASTER MARCH 2013

Follow the link on the church web page at or go directly to pages/first- Presbyterian-Church-Davenport-Iowa/ Worship in the Style of Taize Fridays, March 1 and April 5 at 6:30 PM, in the Chapel This service is patterned after worship in the ecumenical community of Taizé, France. Their sung and silent participatory prayer services are designed for contemplation through music, song and silence. The Brothers of Taizé explain, Short chants, repeated again and again, give it a meditative character. Using just a few words, they express a basic reality of faith, quickly grasped by the mind. As the words are sung over many times, this reality gradually penetrates the whole being. Scripture is read slowly, candles and icons are to enhance contemplative worship. The different tempo of the Taizé service encourages us to break away from the hurried sense of our lives and breathe in the presence of Christ and community. Childcare will be provided. Sunday, April 7, 2013 To benefit the 24 food pantries, meal sites, Winnie s Place and many other ministries of Churches United of the Quad City Area. Coffee with a Mission - In 2001, members of a First Presbyterian mission team to Guatemala learned a lot about the importance of coffee to the people who do it for a living. Surely, much of the injustice in the world is unintentional - no one consciously buys from a big corporation so laborers will have to work for next to nothing or free. No one intends the destruction of bird habitats when taking advantage of a good buy on coffee at the grocery store. But after seeing the impact on those at the other end of the coffee chain, that kind of penny pinching pricks ones conscience. Getting a deal on coffee lost its appeal. That s why First Presbyterian Church serves and offers special coffees for sale in Fellowship Hall. Peace Coffee is fair trade, organic, and shade grown Guatemalan coffee. It comes in beans or ground, regular or decaf, dark or light roast. Mission is often wrapped up in the seemingly small but often significant economic decisions we make on a daily basis. Try switching to one of these delicious coffees and make the world a better place...one cup at a time. Peace Coffee is available for sale in Fellowship Hall between services, or in the church office during normal office hours, 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM, Monday - Friday. Spend a Week at Camp Wyoming this Summer! Summer camp offers children and youth an opportunity to participate in fun activities they may not experience at home such as caving, canoeing, archery, arts & crafts, swimming, cookouts, and nature hikes. A camp experience though is much more than just the activities. It is a place where young people s lives are transformed through the relationships they build with their friends and leaders within the camp community. At camp, kids are given permission to ponder deeper thoughts around the campfire and to explore their faith in an open and supportive environment. Camp experiences are offered for kids in Kindergarten through High School. Visit for more information or pick up a paper brochure by the church office. Soldier Care Packages - The Deacons are preparing to send another batch of care packages to our soldiers overseas. If you have a connection to someone serving in the military overseas, please contact Tom or Sue Ervin (tomervin@mchsi.com or ), and share with them your soldier's APO address. 4 THE BROADCASTER MARCH 2013
