With deep roots in the music of Scotland and Ireland, CRAICMORE features the critically acclaimed vocalist Nancy Johnston. Her deep, rich, contralto voice is rare in the genre. Driving rhythms from guitar, bass, Bohdran drum, conga and other percussion, along with high-spirited whistles, flutes and bagpipes, powerfully render jigs & reels. Four part harmony, rhythmic hardshoe dancing, an East Indian Shruti Box and rumbling Didjeridoo all accent the warmth and passion of CRAICMORE's fiery performances. They have toured for over ten years throughout the Western States and recently performed a 14 concert engagement in Shanghai, China. Don't miss the chance to experience the excitement, the humor and the sheer joy of this music from CRAICMORE. First Presbyterian Church g 1702 Iowa Street g Davenport, Iowa g g fpcdavenport.org

2 PASTOR S COLUMN & CONgREgATION NEWS FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH Out the Study Window With the fall season approaching we have much to look forward to, and be thankful for. As I write this article two brochures are being completed for you to read and respond to, as we begin another program year in the Life of First Presbyterian Church. Rev. Richard E. Miller One brochure will have the full fall schedule of events from the Adult Christian Education Committee. You will want to take a good look at the variety of offerings and note especially the times we will be hosting different speakers to address various topics. I am also excited about the Stewardship brochure that will come your way in October. It will highlight our theme this year, From These Roots. Taken from an excerpt of Paul s prayer to the Ephesians in Chapter 3 we are reminded that, Christ dwells in our hearts through faith, as we are being rooted and grounded in love. We will explore this theme throughout the stewardship season as we discover again how much value we are to god. The summer months have been busy for the Session. After receiving a preliminary report from the Worship Task Force in June, various Session committees began studying the recommendations and taking on tasks that the worship task force had identified; most of which fell outside the idea of creating an alternative worship service. Many of these ideas are provocative for the Session, but not yet fully understood. The worship task force also presented statistical information to the Session in August, which energized many Session members to bring other leaders (Deacons and Trustees of the Deacons Corner: Volunteer Opportunities for You! Foundation) in on this conversation over the next two months. Our hope is to culminate these conversations with a leadership retreat sometime in late October, in order to set priorities and take action. The Session is also putting together a congregational survey, so that we can hear from congregational members regarding many topics that range from: worship, to how friendly and hospitable we think we are, to church growth, to what brought you here, to what keeps you here, etc All in all, we have much to look forward to. A full ACE schedule of events for Adult Christian Education; an energetic and well planned stewardship campaign; and a survey to get you thinking about how much you love this church and where you think god is leading us in the future. My hope is that you participate in all of these wonderful activities and more as we grow in our faith and become known as the Church in the heart of the city. In anticipation of fall and the return of many church activities and events, the Board of Deacons has a variety of opportunities where you can serve. Listed below are the ministries, facilitated by the Deacons, that need volunteers and the Deacon to contact to express your interest and learn more. Look over the list and prayerfully consider where you can serve your church and community. The course will begin with study of the original Canaanite inhabitants followed by the coming of the Hebrews. Learn about the time of the divided kingdom, the exile and the restoration; learn about Hellenization and the Maccabees and the Hasmoneans. Learn about the Sadducees and Pharisees and the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls. We will break for Christmas and return in January to learn more about Qumran and the Essenes and more. There will be time for reflection on what we have heard. All are welcome! There will be no assignments. For additional information contact Penné Duncan ( , penndu@aol.com). Life Lessons from the Great Myths Monday Morning Video Class 10:30 AM 12:00 NOON, beginning September 10 We may often hear some of our Bible stories called myths. How we understand this is in part related to what we know about myths. Myth = falsehood all too often is our tendency. In reality, many of the greatest world myths contain a kernel of historical truth; more importantly they convey universal truths. Cultures throughout human history have passed their values and beliefs to future generations through myths. This course will explore the relation of history and mythology. The goal is to understand how and why certain historical events are expanded and transformed into tales of legendry proportions and to learn from these tales. The Trojan War begins the course and serves as an excellent illustration. The myths of Athens follow; their values have transmitted through the centuries to America s founders. Myths with no kernel of truth will be examined and their value for our day considered. gilgamesh leads us to the Exodus, conflicts from the dawn of civilization to our day; what truths do these myths provide? Myths of the early Roman Empire and Alexander the great whose life was embellished into myth even while he lived follow. The course moves to the British Isles and Norse sagas. Finally, American myths, a boundless frontier; do they hearken back to the oldest legends?! All are welcome! Contact Penné Duncan ( , penndu@aol.com). THE BROADCASTER SEPTEMBER

5 FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH MISSION AND OUTREACH FpC Friend Ordained in Guatemala Nidia galdamez Cabrera (right, in photo) was one of two women ordained as a lay minister at ILUgUA worship services in La Trementina on August 19. Nidia visited the Quad-Cities in June and participated in the welcome celebration with Rev. Jose Pilar Alvarez and Maria Isabel Lopez at FPC on June 24. She has previously volunteered as a youth leader at ILUgUA (Lutheran Church of guatemala) and will continue those duties, in addition to serving as president of the Board. The other woman, Persida gudiel, will also be leading an ILUgUA congregation elsewhere in guatemala. Congratulations to Nidia on this milestone in her faith journey! a Reunion by John Gere In June of this year, Diane and I journeyed to Mississippi to attend/enjoy a series of concerts. Our daughter Marji and her husband Dan were performers in the Magnolia Chamber Orchestra based in gulfport, Mississippi and included musicians from distant locations in the USA, South America and Australia. The music was outstanding and inspiring, we were introduced to a long-awaited wonderful composition by Dan, and being in the company of the worldly personalities was an incredible experience. To complete the magic of the trip, we met up with Irene McIntosh and Ed Cake for breakfast in Ocean Springs. These two amazing individuals were the leaders in the volunteer effort in the rebuilding of the gulf Coast in the months and years following Hurricane Katrina s devastation in August of First Presbyterian Church commissioned four mission groups in that effort, and I was honored to be a part of three of those teams. This was an opportunity for Diane to meet them personally after my glowing comments about them for six years. At the time we assisted with the re-building, the two of them were hair-on-fire busy with coordinating the work and keeping us all productive. At that time, though we got their story in a brief form, they (and we) needed to keep focused on the projects and morally supporting the residents-in-peril. Meeting them again on this trip was a no-pressure chance to get more details and impressions. Irene s and Ed s personal project was D Iberville, a town of 8,000 pre-katrina. The destruction reduced the population to 4,000 until the rebuilding was complete. Of course, some of the displaced 4,000 never returned, but most of them were back in their reconditioned homes or in new homes within three-and-a-half years (complete during the spring of 2008). They have since been mentors in developing volunteer efforts in other US disaster locales, including Oakville, Iowa (also a FPC mission). Dr. Irene was a full-time psychology professor at the University of Alabama when we there in 2006 and At the same time, she was the ramrod of the volunteer organization. We didn t know until this casual breakfast meeting that Irene was averaging about oneand-a-half hours of sleep per night in order to keep both parts of her life going at more than full speed. We also were not aware of the fortitude she exercised during the effort in face-to-face encounters with FEMA and other federal government agents in getting food to the residents there. She is retired from education now, but still instrumental in ushering a new growth in D Iberville. She is also writing a book about the Katrina chapter of her life. President Directors, D Iberville Volunteers Foundation: Dr. Irene McIntosh and Dr. Ed Cake. Dr. Ed is a marine biologist. His practice took a brutal hit with the hurricane, so he decided to partner with Irene in the volunteer effort His role was to schedule work teams, keep logs of progress on a daily basis and develop a database of volunteers He was the one that we saw during the daylight hours and our touch point for work assignments. Ed now stays very involved in monitoring the evolution of the gulf since Katrina. and the BP oil spill. Very much an environmentalist, he is quite vocal on the realities of the aftermath and its long-term effect on marine life in the entire gulf. I think I can say for those of us that participated on these mission trips, that we all thought Irene and Ed were married (until we realized they had different last names). Their management partnership had the characteristics of a marriage, particularly the occasional head-to-head arguments they had on some of the details.. Ed usually lost those! Both Irene and Ed send their love and gratitude for what our teams did for their little town. I don t think there is any way to thank THEM enough for what they did for us. STOP. Hunger. You can help stop hunger by joining people of many faiths for the Quad Cities annual Crop Walk. This year s walk is Sunday October 7, at 2:00 PM and it will step off from Modern Woodman Park. Dan Steele, Olympic Bronze Medalist in 2002 and Track and Field Coach for University of Northern Iowa, will be our honorary chair and lead walker. Come and meet him on walk day! Information will be available in the Deacons Corner Sunday September 16, 23 or 30. You may also contact Deb Beshears ( or d.beshears@hotmail.com). The Habitat for Humanity ReStore would like to thank members of Session and Deacons who voted to approve a recent Deacon Endowment Fund grant in support of ReStore Health & Home, a new division of Habitat ReStore that opened in June. Through this new store, donations of new and gently used home health care items (such as walkers, hospital beds, shower benches, grabbers, canes, toilet risers, wheel chairs, scooters and packaged bandages and dressings) are offered for sale at prices 25-50% of retail. Proceeds from the sale of these items help Habitat for Humanity Quad Cities provide housing to deserving families. ReStore Health & Home is seeking volunteers to answer phones and greet customers or process incoming donations.
