Soloists will offer the special music for the evening. The Feast of Light will be celebrated as the darkened Sanctuary is transformed by candlelight to symbolize pilgrims coming to see the Light of the World. The Rev. At 11:00 PM, a festive service of carols and candlelighting will herald the welcome of Christmas Day. The Rev. Richard Miller will preach the Christmas message. The Vesper Bells will accompany the Cathedral Choir of Young Men and Boys, and the service will also include the Sanctuary Choir and the Cecelian Carolers. 2 Congregational News Rev. Richard E. Miller Out the Study Window Advent Taizé For well over a decade, First Presbyterian Church hosted one of the most successful and long standing monthly Taizé worship experiences in the quad Cities. We were one of the first churches to explore this wonderful quiet reflective worship experience in the area. As time went on, other churches began their own Taizé services, and we watched the interest for our monthly Friday night service wane. So, this year we decided to highlight the strengths of this reflective service during the seasons of Advent and Lent. With the Advent season upon us we want to make sure you know about the dates and times so you can make the Advent season even more meaningful by attending these wonderful worship experiences. Each year brings a unique set of opportunities and challenges. We eagerly accept these opportunities and embrace the challenges, strengthened by the combined efforts of the entire congregation. The Session has identified challenging goals for our congregation, as we raise money to support the church s mission and ministry for We ask that you to prayerfully consider supporting the church s work with a stewardship investment for the coming year. Show your support by making a commitment to First Presbyterian Church for the coming year. Pledge cards may be found in the pew racks and dropped into the offering plate. You may also visit the church website at to set up your donations for We will gather in the Chapel on Wednesday, December 3, 10 and 17 from 6:30 7:15 PM. 3 Mission & Outreach The Advent Giving Tree The Advent Giving Tree is an important part of the life of the church during the Advent season. It is a way for the congregation to reach out to people in our neighborhood and around the world to bring the love of God to them, to help meet their needs during the holidays, and to remind them of God s ever-lasting gift to us all through the birth of Jesus Christ. The Advent Giving Tree will include: Re-Member Tools Angel Tree Project (Prison Ministry) Alice Chikomo Ministry Harare, Zimbabwe ILUGUA Irrigation Systems Love Gift Boys and Girls Club Re-Member - Tools Multiple mission groups from FPC have traveled to South Dakota to work on building projects coordinated by Re-Member at the Pine Ridge Reservation. Work groups do not typically bring their own tools for the projects, as Re-Member furnishes the necessary items. FPC has funded the purchase of tools in previous years and a Giving Tree gift to Re-Member will provide additional tools for the June 2015 mission team to deliver. ILUGUA - Irrigation Systems ILUGUA (Lutheran Church of Guatemala) has been FPC s mission partner since 2007 and has been internationally acclaimed by Bread for the World for its efforts in coordinating programs in sustainable agriculture to some of the poorest citizens in the Zacapa region of Guatemala. The area, one of the driest in Central America, sustained a major drought in 2014 which caused severe crop loss for those with already limited water resources. However, families who had previously received irrigation systems funded by FPC were equipped to produce a crop in the midst of the drought. A Giving Tree gift to ILUGUA will help to fund water systems and ultimately to feed additional families served by ILUGUA s outreach. Alice Chikomo Ministry Mrs. Alice Chikomo and her husband, Rev. Herbert Chikomo, served the FPC congregation in 1983 before returning to their native Zimbabwe, where Rev. Chikomo became the first indigenous pastor at City Presbyterian Church in Harare. Alice continues to serve the Harare community with an outreach program assisting blind mothers and their young school children. Alice uses FPC financial gifts to provide daytime shelter for activities with the women, who are street people. She helps them via sewing projects, light lunches, and assisting with assembling school uniforms for those who have school aged children. Boys and Girls Club Once again, the Boys and Girls Club will have a Backpack Christmas Tree set up in Fellowship Hall. The club would love any new backpacks you can donate for Christmas this year. Many of them start the school year without one, or with the free, nylon drawstring bags that businesses give away and by December, they have nothing left. Backpacks are definitely on sale now and all donations are so appreciated. For more information, contact Tiffany Horvath (horvath@fpcdavenport.org). Love Gift The Love Gift is a ministry of the Pastoral Care & Spiritual Development Committee of the Deacons. Love Gift serves members of our congregation in special financial need on a one time basis. Gifts remain anonymous and staff or Deacons can nominate someone for a Love Gift. A Love Gift cannot be requested by an individual for themselves. Stop by the Advent Giving Tree in Fellowship Hall and pick a Love Gift card. Simply indicate Love Gift on your check or Deacon Green envelope and place it in the offering plate, or mail to the church. Please return monetary gifts by December 7, so they can be distributed in time for Christmas. Thank you in advance for your generosity. Angel Tree Project Ask most children and they would probably say that the Christmas season is their most favorite time of the year. Children learn the holiday traditions of their families, Christmas cookies add a wonderful scent to the house, and most of all, there is the excitement of wondering what will be awaiting under the tree for them on Christmas morning. For children with an incarcerated parent, however, Christmas can be a very bleak time of year. Children may feel unloved or abandoned by their incarcerated parent, and their remaining parent or care giver may not have enough money for anything but the basic necessities of life. The Angel Tree Project helps these children by having church members purchase gifts for them, on behalf of their imprisoned parent. For a child to know that they have not been forgotten may be even more important than the gifts themselves! For an incarcerated parent, it allows the opportunity for restored dignity and hope. Thanks to everyone that supports the Angel Tree gift giving program. Please reminder that wrapped gifts are due back at the church by Sunday, December 7. We will need help sorting and delivering gifts. On Saturday, December 13 from 9:00-11:00 AM please plan to stop by Fellowship Hall to help with sorting. We will be making sure all gifts have the correct tags and are sorted by families. On Sunday, December 14 the deliveries start. If you sign up to deliver, please stop by Fellowship Hall to pick up gifts. This is a wonderful way to make the whole family feel the holiday spirit and to teach children the real meaning of Christmas. Please prayerfully consider becoming part of First Presbyterian Deacons Angel Tree Project, in conjunction with the Prison Fellowship Ministries. Contact Erika Schmidt (schmidte@isualum.com), Mia Carr (mialyncarr@hotmail.com), or Diane Schreiner (dschrein@mchsi.com) or more information or to offer to help. THE BROADCASTER DECEMBER

4 ACE & New Members Welcomed The Adult Christian Education Committee (ACE) challenges you to participate in study and learning while experiencing Christian fellowship. Adult Education (ACE) Programs in Von Maur Hall - Sundays, 10:00 AM December 7, 14 & 21: Four Gods Baylor Institute for Studies of Religion had a 40 page survey completed by 3,369 respondents. The results were validated by the Gallup Organization. The Baylor Institute discovered that most of us have one of four distinctly different understandings of God s nature. In this series, we address the following topics and questions. 1. How is God represented through a study of the Bible and the work of artists? 2. We will take a private survey and compare responses to the four concepts of God found in America. 3. Do you believe in an Authoritative God, a Benevolent God, a Critical God, or a Distant God? 4. Is it possible to reach common understanding about God s nature? 5. What shapes the positions you take regarding politics, morality and social issues? Many of our personal, social, and political decisions are determined by our beliefs regarding the nature of God. Plan to join this discussion. Tuesday Morning Video Class - 10:30 AM, in the Parlor The World of Biblical Israel This course traces the history of Israel from its origins in the central villages west of the Jordan, to its emergence as a nation and then a pair of kingdoms, through the Babylonian conquest and resettlement. From the family compounds to the battlefields, from the kitchens to the temples, she puts flesh on the bones of the stories. The class meets in the parlor from 10:30 AM to 12:00 NOON on Tuesdays. Two half-hour lectures will be shown each week. For more information, contact Connie Richardson ( , thedottedi@aol.com).
