2 XVI SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME WEEKLY STEWARSHIP July 15, 2018 Envelope Giving $1, Plate Giving $1, Online Giving $ Total $3, Funds needed to meet operations $5, Overage/Deficit -($1,521.35) JULY 22, 2018 XVI SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME GOSPEL REFLECTION GOSPEL MEDITATION ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE July 22, th Sunday in Ordinary Time MARK 6:30-34 Now what? It s a difficult thing to hear, isn t it? The train comes late, a child unexpectedly cries, and the latest public policy debate flares up in the news. Life throws us curveballs, and we have no choice but to adapt. Jesus and the Apostles find themselves in that exact situation in today s Gospel. The Apostles have returned from their two-by-two missionary journey. As Jesus hears all of their stories, he knows they need time to recover and refresh. Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while. Their wilderness retreat is short-lived, however, as eager crowds discover their location. Jesus is well aware of the needs of his disciples. Still, as he looks out at the crowd, His heart was moved with pity for them, for they were like sheep without a shepherd. The rest break is over. He began to teach them many things. For those of us who have experienced a taste of much-needed relaxation only to have it taken away abruptly, perhaps we surmise what the Apostles might have been feeling in that moment. But Jesus isn t being inconsiderate of the Apostles needs. He offers them and us a lived lesson. St. John Paul II wrote, The whole of Christ s life was a continual teaching: his silences, his miracles, his gestures, his prayer, his love for people, his special affection for the little and the poor, his acceptance of the total sacrifice on the Cross for the redemption of the world (On Catechesis in Our Time, 9). In Jesus choice to teach, we see all of these things: sacrificial love, concern for the marginalized, and priority of people s needs over personal preference. These aren t abstract ideals. They re lived realities as we strive to live and love like Jesus. When a new obstacle confronts you in your life, how do you respond? Cycles of Faith ADORATION Wednesdays 8:30AM-5:00PM Come spend an hour with Him or five minutes, your life will never be the same! Please pray for: Julian Lorenzo Phan Castro Family Mary Ellen Hultquist Silvia Rodriguez Diane Thorpe Brigida McInvale Toland Family Rianna Ver Hoeve Danny Frank Tannehill Joe Ayala Helen & Buriel Smith Lori Avalos Laura Langarica EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP My daughter can easily become overwhelmed by having so much to do. She recently graduated from high school, and many times during those four years, she found herself going crazy from being involved in so many things. Sports, drama, youth group, homework, friends, and more all demanded a slice of her attention. Sometimes the slice of time that remained wasn t much and one does have to sleep! A good everyday steward can get caught up in doing so much and giving so much that he or she loses sight of the fact that you cannot give what you do not have. If you have no time left, you cannot give that. If you have no energy left, you cannot give that. Finally, if you find yourself agitated and overwhelmed, you cannot give that which others benefit from the most: YOU! Even when we plant seeds in a garden after tilling and watering the soil, we must rest and wait for there to be growth. If we do not take time to rest and recharge, we are not allowing time for God s grace to bring forth new life in us. We fear that things will suffer without us, but the truth is that no one is benefiting from our fatigue. We can think we are giving but really we are empty. Take some time and rest in your God. Retreat and recharge. Then you will be able to share once again. Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS

Walk with us on this retreat as we enter the world of the Exercises of St. Ignatius Loyala to draw out important lessons on how to live contemplatively in our busy lives. Through talks and silence, prayer exercises and quiet time alone, Mass and opportunity for confession and spiritual direction, we will discover new tools to be contemplatives in action. We are not charging for this retreat. However, the cost to the parish is $200 per person. If you are able to make a donation to offset the cost, this will be gratefully accepted. Have we ever imagined Jesus so deeply moved with emotion and engulfed with pity for us? We often are sheep without a shepherd who are lured by the emptiness of worldly attractions and superficial desires. We become lost. God, in the depth of His being, is deeply moved by our pain, loneliness, and heartache. God does not judge or condemn. He loves and is mercy itself. He knows firsthand the pain that comes with being lost and alone and desires to teach us about His merciful love. Do we want to be taught? Listen to God s word and be open to God s presence in the Eucharist. Observances for the Week of July 22, 2018 Monday: St. Bridget, Religious Tuesday: St. Sharbel Makhlūf, Priest Wednesday: St. James, Apostle Thursday: Sts. Please contact Al Peterson or Steve Browne if you would like to perform. ST. SHARBEL MAKHLUF On July 24th, we celebrate the feast of a saint who ran way from home! St. Sharbel was born Yussef Antoun Makhluf in the Lebanese countryside in the mid-1800 s. His life was a simple one, attending school, caring for the family cow, and taking long solitary walks to contemplate the beauty of creation. When his family pressured him to marry, the young man quietly left home without a word. He traveled on foot to a nearby monastery. When his family caught wind of where he had gone, the decision had been made. After being ordained a priest, St. Sharbel still showed a longing for solitude. He received permission to become a hermit. His reputation for holiness, however, led to a busier life than he might have liked! Many people sought him for advice and blessings. St. Sharbel Makhluf s life reminds us that a life of prayer even an unconventional one is attractive! SHAWLS FOR MODESTY Summertime has arrived and the warm weather is upon us can be difficult to remember to maintain modesty & wear your Sunday Best when attending Mass at St. Pius X. A person s true beauty comes from their dignity of being made in God s image. If anyone wants to truly reflect God s beauty, it starts with modesty. Respectfully, we are asking our Parishioners and visitors to wear proper attire and dress conservatively. We understand that there may be unavoidable circumstances and for your convenience, we are now providing SHAWLS located in the vestibule to wear as needed. Please return them before leaving. Women should wear modest dresses, skirts or slacks. No shorts, tank tops, short skirts or tight-fitting clothing. Men should wear shirt & slacks: No tank tops, shorts or sandals.

6 XVI SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME WHY DO WE DO THAT? Question: July 26 is the feast of Joachim and Anna. Who are they and what do we know about them? Answer: Joachim and Anna are the parents of Mary, the mother of Jesus, yet there is absolutely no biblical reference to them whatsoever. So where do we get their names, and what is their story? Their names are found in an apocryphal (hidden) gospel known as The Infancy Gospel of James. Apocryphal, or hidden gospels, consist of accounts of Jesus life that were ultimately not accepted as inspired works, and thus were not included in the Bible. However, they sometimes captured the Christian imagination, spilling into the devotional dimension of the community. James infancy gospel begins with the parents of Mary and their desire for a child. In their prayer and petitions to God, they are heard and given the blessings of a child, whom they named Mary. While we have no idea who Mary s parents really were, the fact that we celebrate the feast of Joachim and Anna indicates that the bond of family love is important in the Christian life. Long before Grandparents Day was established, the church had a feast that honored the presumed grandparents of Jesus. While their names are part of non-inspired apocryphal legends, the fact of the Savior s human ancestry is not. Christ, the incarnate Word, dwelt among us in the flesh in a human family. In honoring the grandparents of Jesus, we really proclaim our faith in the Incarnation -- God becoming human! Saint Bridget of Sweden Bridget was the daughter of a wealthy governor who used his riches generously. He donated money for good causes and helped the poor. He worked for the just and fair treatment of all the people. Bridget, who was born in 1303, learned these lessons early in her life. Bridget married into the Swedish royal family and lovingly raised eight children, one of whom came to be known as St. Catherine of Sweden. Bridget and her husband followed her father s example of caring for people in need. It is said that she even arranged for a hospital to be built on their estate. The hospital was open to all. When her husband died, Bridget gave away all her possessions. She founded a double monastery for men and women who lived apart, but worshipped together. The religious order was known as the Order of the Most Holy Saviour, or the Brigittines. When Bridget learned of an epidemic in Rome, she made a pilgrimage there to assist the sick and dying. While in Rome, she spoke out against the injustices she saw and worked to change situations that kept all people from living a good life. Her words and actions influenced government and Church officials, even the pope! Bridget made a pilgrimage to the Holy Land to see the places where Jesus taught, died, and rose from the dead. During her pilgrimage Bridget experienced Christ s presence in prayer visions. Bridget died after she returned to Rome, but her body was eventually returned to her land and the people she loved and cared for. Her coffin was carried reverently through Europe to Sweden, and she is buried at the monastery she founded. Because of her holiness, Bridget was declared a saint only 18 years after her death in She is the patron saint of Sweden. In 1999, Pope John Paul II honored her once more: St. Bridget was named co-patron saint of all of Europe along with St. Catherine of Siena and St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, who was known as Edith Stein in life. We honor St. Bridget, also known as St. Birgitta, on July 23 each year. We can pray to Bridget, asking her to help us to love and care for our neighbor as she did. After the rediscovery of his relics in 814, pilgrimages to his tomb in Compostela, northern Spain, became extremely popular. Compostela even rivaled Jerusalem and Rome as a destination for pilgrim travelers during the Middle Ages. Consequently, routes to Saint James s shrine, including one through Rothenburg, Germany, crisscrossed Europe, marking the path to the saint s tomb. Today, the Way of Saint James (Camino de Santiago) continues to direct travelers to the remains of the fiery-tempered Apostle whom Jesus once called a Son of Thunder. St. Jakobskirche and the Twelve Apostles Altar The St. Jakobskirche (Saint James s Church) in Rothenburg ob der Tauber was once an important stop on the pilgrimage road to Santiago de Compostela. Known more widely as the home of the Altar of the Holy Blood, the church also houses the impressive Twelve Apostles Altar (Zwölfbotenaltar), a carved altarpiece with a painted predella and painted wings, which incorporates several images of Saint James.Completed in 1466, the altarpiece is the work of Hans Waidenlich and Friedrich Herlin with carvings in the Multscher tradition by an unknown sculptor.[9] Herlin, who may have been from Rothenburg, moved to Nördlingen later in his career and is closely identified with the Twelve Apostles Altar, which he signed: This work was made by Friedrich Herlin, painter, mcccclxvi. Saint James pray to God for him.
