Many of us come from a nation of material abundance. We have all the things we could possibly need not only to survive, but to thrive - food, shelter, mental ability, income, access to medical care. Most people in human history lived with far less than we. So why are we so dissatisfied? Some Christians can be drawn to the "prosperity Gospel." This is the idea that following God will bring us material abundance in this life. That surely seems to be the story of today's Gospel! Peter and his friends chose - with some faith - to put out their nets a final time at Jesus' command. "They caught a great number of fish and their nets were tearing. They signaled to their partners in the other boat to come to help them. They came and filled both boats so that they were in danger of sinking." What gift! What abundance! What prosperity! Peter and his friends caught more fish than they'd ever seen. Yet what is their response to this material abundance, this gift from God? They leave it behind. "When they brought their boats to the shore, they left everything and followed him." Praying for God to meet our physical, material needs is not a bad thing! Jesus himself includes "give us this day our daily bread" in the prayer he teaches his disciples. The question is, how do we respond when our prayers are answered? Do we thank God briefly, or perhaps ignore Him completely and move on with our lives? Or do we respond as Peter did? "God? You showed up in an area that has no bearing on my eternal salvation. You gave me a gift I didn't even really need. You love me! You really do love me." Is our gratitude only surface level? Or do we allow ourselves, like Peter did, to respond with wonder, awe, and deeper discipleship? Cycles of the Faith WEEKLY STEWARSHIP February 3, 2019 Envelope Giving $1, Plate Giving $1, Online Giving Total $4, Funds needed to meet operations $5, Overage/Deficit -($972.20) ADORATION Wednesdays 8:30am-5:00pm Come spend an hour with Him or five minutes, your life will never be the same! Please pray for: Barbara Sefrian Fowler Family Joe Coppola Joey Coppola Julian Lorenzo Mary Ellen Hultquist Silvia Rodriguez Brigida McInvale Danny Helen & Buriel Smith Tomas & Carmen Chavez Danny Shoshani Socorro Martinez Margie Toland Have you ever participated in various trust exercises, where you have to place your faith in others around you? Maybe it was falling backwards with your eyes closed while the person's voice speaking to you seemed to drift further away. Maybe it was jumping from a height into people's arms that didn't seem strong enough to catch you. These activities were supposed to show you the meaning of trust and help grow that trust in you for your comrades. Sometimes it worked. Other times, some prankster would actually let you fall, and then you learned to trust no one. So much for building up our ability to trust. Trust is important, especially in our relationship with Jesus. He calls us all the time and asks for us to trust. However, because of doubt or a desire to follow our own will, we choose to disregard his request. After objecting to Jesus' request to lower his net into the water, Peter was humbled when he caught so much fish that the net began to tear. Peter was a fisherman by trade. Surely he knew what the catch was probably going to be that day. But Jesus asked him to follow his will. Peter wanted to follow his own. Peter realized that his trust from then on should be in the Lord. Do you sometimes think your generosity will bear little fruit? Do you wonder if your surrender to God in stewardship living really amounts to much at all? Trust in Jesus, the one who calls you to this life. His word is truth, and he would never let you fall. -Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS

3 What is Pro Life? Are we sure we are 100% Pro Life? Part V The Church teaches that all life is sacred and must be cherished and protected from conception to natural death. By keeping this guiding principle in mind in reviewing all the following moral issues of today, we can quickly see what it means to be 100% Pro Life, no exceptions. Euthanasia or Assisted Suicide This is an imposed death. It is intentionally doing something or not doing something in order to induce the death of a person. Both culturally and medically the following terms have been broadly expanded: terminal condition, persistent vegetative state, brain death, and medical treatment. Therefore, when making decisions based on these terms, we must be careful that our first guiding principle still remains not to hasten death because of false compassion for the comfort of the patient. Rather, health care is always to preserve life and give good care until natural death. What is good care for the terminally ill patient? What if society, the medical profession and their loved ones, and maybe the patient themselves think they should die by their own choice? It s their life, right? If we cannot end their life (euthanasia) or help them take their own life (assisted suicide), what can be done? The following can be done and is good ethical medical care: Administering pain medication whose first purpose is to alleviate intense suffering. Stopping treatment that is a grave painful burden on a very sick terminal person. Withdrawing nutrition and hydration when a person s body can no longer absorb it and which could even cause them more harm. If you believe that Euthanasia or Assisted Suicide is wrong, then you are Pro Life on this issue. Joan Murray Lucas Texas "I believe every abortion is a tragedy." Diane Abbott CATHOLIC QUOTES WORDS TO INSPIRE THE FAITHFUL "Community is a sign that love is possible..." -Jean Vanier Jesus answered, amen, amen, I say to you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit. Fear often takes hold of us, and we find ourselves making excuses for why it is better to just mind our own business. There is a voice within each of us that is saying, "Follow me". What does this prompting mean? The purpose of discipleship is not to secure our own station in life and enhance our comfort zone. Discipleship is about taking risks and venturing forth into the unknown, tending to the needs of others and being prophetic voices of change. We will not drink deeply of life until we listen to the voice of God within. When God asks, "Whom shall I send?", will you reply, "Here I am? send me!"? Happy Valentines Day Rev. Msgr. Cyril, Monk, and Methodius, Bishop; Valentine's Day Simon said in reply, "Master, we have worked hard all night and have caught nothing, but at your command I will lower the nets." When they had done this, they caught a great number of fish and their nets were tearing. - Lk 5:5-6 QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK First Reading In witnessing the revelation of God's holy presence, Isaiah was deeply troubled by his own sin. Then the Lord freed him from his sin, and he was open to do God's will. How would you describe your spiritual disposition after reconciliation with the Lord? Second Reading Paul reports to the Corinthians of the many people to whom Jesus revealed himself after he rose from the dead. Paul includes himself on that list, speaking frequently of God's grace. Where do you see God's grace in your life? Gospel Reading Luke offers us a lot of insights into the personality of Peter with his account of Jesus' call of the first disciples. What do we know about Peter based on this call narrative?

4 V SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Responding to God s Grace 2019 ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL DIOCESE OF SAN DIEGO Brothers and Sisters, St. Pius X Jamul Catholic Church Parish is pleased to participate in the 2019 Responding to God s Grace Annual Catholic Appeal. This appeal supports charitable needs throughout the Diocese of San Diego. Your gifts make possible the work that impacts so many in our diocese: those who attend Catholic school, formation of new priests and care for our retired priests, evangelization and accompaniment of Young Adults, and the consoling presence of Christ for those imprisoned. Please make your intention to the Annual Catholic Appeal. You can make your contribution online at giving.sdcatholic.org, or by picking up a combo brochure/response card here at the parish. STEWARDSHIP PRAYER God my Creator, you made me all that I am and gave me all that I have. Help me show my gratitude by using these gifts to serve others in your name. Jesus my Redeemer, you taught me the way to eternal life by your example of loving service to others. Grant me the courage to respond to your call to discipleship by following in your footsteps. Holy Spirit of God, be with me as I choose each day to put you first in my life. Let me be a model of Christian Stewardship so others will come to know you through my actions. I pray, dear Lord, that you open the minds and hearts of all the men, women and young people of our parish, that we may joyfully accept your challenge to be good stewards. Amen. Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others as faithful stewards of God s grace in it s various forms 1 Peter 4:10 ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL 2019 Last year our goal was $36, and according to the Diocese we exceeded our goal by $ Which means that $18, goes towards the ACA assessment and $18, of contributions over assessment will be deposited into our parish caps account. This year our goal is $37,000. Our parishioners are very generous and I know we will meet & exceed our goal for Thank you in advance from the Pastor s desk & staff. Calendar Month of February Feb. 12th: 7-9pm Youth Gathering in Youth Feb. 17th: 7:30-10am in Keenan Hall Feb. 19th: 7-9pm Youth Gathering in Youth Feb 26th: 7-9pm Youth Gathering in Youth Sts. Cyril & Methodius These brothers by birth became brothers in mission. Cyril and Methodius were born to a Greek diplomat in the 800s. The two brothers served in local governmental posts before each withdrew to a monastery. Their lives changed when the political leadership in Eastern Europe what is now Ukraine requested priests who spoke the native Slavic languages. Cyril and Methodius had proven themselves as able administrators and holy men, so they were sent as missionaries. First, Cyril invented an alphabet. This became the foundation for what is now used today and is still called the Cyrillic alphabet! Next, the brothers translated the Gospels, the Psalms, and other liturgical books into the native language of the people. Their work spread across Eastern Europe. God indeed raises up saints for their times! Marriage Enrichment Celebrate your sweetheart and give your marriage a Worldwide Marriage Encounter Weekend. Marriage Encounter takes the love you have for your spouse and helps you to build, expand, and deepen that relationship. Sign up for the upcoming March 22-24th weekend at the Courtyard Marriott in Rancho Bernardo. Food and lodging are provided. There is a $75 fee and a voluntary donation requested at the end of the weekend. For many couples "Their Weekend" is one of the most significant experiences of their marriages. Sign up today at WHY DO WE DO THAT? Question: What kind of religious practices should we begin, once we marry, to help us practice our faith each day? Answer: Your spiritual life as a couple is important. The sacrament of Marriage is a gift and a grace, but living it well isn't always easy! It requires intentionality and perseverance. Growing your spiritual life as a couple also requires a plan. Life can be incredibly busy. There's never "enough time" for everything we want to do. But we can live by our priorities. If we don't prioritize prayer, we'll find it slowly disappear from our lives. If you're not already praying individually, that's a good place to start. If your schedules are similar, take some quiet time at the same time to help hold each other accountable. Praying together is also important! You could start by looking at the religious practices of your family and of families around you that you respect. Talk with your spouse about the ones who make the deepest impression on you or were most meaningful when you were young. Think about what you want your future children to experience. Making faith a commitment now will mean it is engrained habit when you grow your family. Ultimately, these faith practices should help us grow in our love for God and for one another.
