Did you grow up in a small town? Whenever you see stories of tight-knit communities, a common refrain is that everybody knows everybody and that's very difficult to change. If you leave and return, people expect you to be and act a certain way, and it's strange for them if you do not. In today's Gospel, we see that Jesus was already moving "in the power of the Spirit and news of him spread throughout the whole region. He...was praised by all." His ministry has begun! News of his growing popularity must have proceeded him to Nazareth. Upon his arrival, he "went according to his custom into the synagogue on the sabbath day." For the first few moments, he is what they expect - their hometown boy returning to pay his respects. As was common of men at the time, he takes a turn reading a passage of Sacred Scripture. It is a bold passage, one he selects intentionally. "He unrolled the scroll and found the passage where it was written: The Spirit of the Lord is upon me." After reading about holy anointing's, liberation for the poor and prisoners, and physical healings, Jesus does the unthinkable. "'Today this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing.'" We are all called to imitate Christ wherever we are. This might mean doing the unexpected! All too often we're content with the daily status quo, and so are the people around us. When we take a stand for Christian values, change our lifestyle to reflect the Gospel, and work for justice in society, we may make others uncomfortable. But Jesus doesn't call us to the same life we lived yesterday or the year before that. He is calling all of us - each and every one of us - to deeper conversion of heart. No matter what other people expect, will you love in the Spirit of the Lord today? Cycles of the Faith WEEKLY STEWARSHIP January 20, 2019 Envelope Giving $1, Plate Giving $1, Online Giving $ Total $3, Funds needed to meet operations $5, Overage/Deficit -($1,785.35) ADORATION Wednesdays 8:30am-5:00pm Come spend an hour with Him or five minutes, your life will never be the same! Please pray for: Joe Coppola Joey Coppola Julian Lorenzo Mary Ellen Hultquist Silvia Rodriguez Brigida McInvale Danny Helen & Buriel Smith Tomas & Carmen Chavez Danny Shoshani Socorro Martinez Margie Toland Remember that time when you arrived at school to take a test or quiz on material you failed to read? Maybe it was on a classic book or a chapter in a science textbook. Did your blood pressure go sky high and the sweat start to show on your forehead? Squirming in the seat, you wondered what you could have done to avoid feeling this way. Then it came to you: you should have read what you were supposed to read! Procrastination, indifference, poor scheduling of time, and stubbornness are all reasons why we fail to be prepared for a situation that arises in our lives. We lack commitment in doing what we are asked to do or what we know we should do. This is certainly true in our spiritual lives as well. We may choose to bear the label of disciple or good steward, but we don't really prepare ourselves for the daily journey of life. Sacred Scripture can prepare us more fully for the circumstances of life, but not if we fail to read it. The words contained there are Spirit and life for us. They help us to understand where we fit into the Body of Christ and how we are to respond to the daily call of Christ. Everyday Stewards should be committed to reading and reflection of the Word of God. We know we should spend time with God's Word, but too often we fail to due to the same reasons already mentioned. When we failed to read in school, perhaps we failed the test and it hurt our grade. When we fail in life due to lack of preparedness, sometimes the consequences are more severe. -Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS

Are we sure we are 100% Pro Life? Part III The Church teaches that all life is sacred and must be cherished and protected from conception to natural death. By keeping this guiding principle in mind in reviewing all the following moral issues of today, we can quickly see what it means to be 100% Pro Life, no exceptions. Cloning This is the sucking out of the nucleus of a cell and replacing it with the nucleus of another cell from the person you are trying to reproduce. Why can we not try to create a better person, without any inherited traits and disabilities we consider undesirable? We cannot recreate what God has created. He has given each person their own soul, individuality and purpose. We cannot determine what qualities are valuable, and what are not. That is genocide. Pro Life is the trusting acceptance of the life that God has created, not what we think is the best for them, society or ourselves. If you believe that Cloning is wrong, then you are Pro Life on this issue. Joan Murray Lucas Texas Thank You St. Vincent de Paul Society would like to thank all the parishioners and visitors who have been helping with monetary donations for our cause. Yours are the eyes through which the compassion of Christ must look out on the world. Yours are the feet with which He is to go about doing good. Yours are the hands with which He is to bless His people." We are, in every way shape and form, the Body of Christ. Our bodies are not just one single part but many. We are many, and we are all uniquely different. Yet each in his or her own way contributes significantly to the whole. We are all baptized in one spirit, and there are no distinctions that separate us. We must keep our eyes focused on the greater whole and not get distracted or consumed with particular parts. Everything and everyone must work together for the praise and glory of God. Rev. Nehemiah encouraged the people to find strength in the words of Scripture read by Ezra. How do you use Sacred Scripture in your spiritual journey? Second Reading St. Paul speaks at length to the Corinthians about the "one body" of Christ and the "many parts" of the believing community. How do you think this is a winning argument for a Christian community experiencing division? Gospel Reading We hear today the prologue to Luke's Gospel and Jesus' words in his hometown of Nazareth. In the prologue, Luke reveals his sources and his motivations for writing his Gospel. What do you find most compelling about Luke's prologue?

4 III SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME St. Pius X Jamul Valentine s Day Dinner & Dance Party Saturday, February 9, :00pm 12:00am Please see any member of the Group to purchase your tickets in advance. $20. single $30. a couple At the door: $25. single $35. a couple Presentation of the Lord Jesus is the Messiah who institutes a new covenant with his people, but he was raised as a practicing Jew by his devout parents. Jewish tradition held that firstborn male children were to be presented at the Temple and a sacrifice offered 40 days after his birth. Luke's Gospel tells the story of this sacred event. Simeon, a priest of the temple, prophetically greets the Holy Family. "Now let your servant go in peace? my eyes have seen salvation which you have prepared in the site of all peoples." On this feast, we remember that Jesus does not come to abolish the traditions of the past but to fulfill them. His sacrifice on the cross and establishment of the Church lay the foundation for new traditions that continue to bring life to us today! Saturday, February 2, :30AM Join us for a light breakfast and time to make some new connections and get to know your brothers in Christ better. The topic is:: The Most Dangerous Prayer To accommodate the many commitments we have in our lives, the meeting will take place in Keenan Hall and last only an hour. For more information, please contact David Block at blockdavid@aol.com WHY DO WE DO THAT? Question: This month, we had the March for Life and the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. What does the Church have to say about having respectful conversations between people who disagree? Answer: Christians are not removed from the world and its conflicts. Indeed, Jesus sends us "to the ends of the earth" (Acts 1:8). Due to the complex nature of the human experience, the pressures of cultures that don't share Christian values, and the difficulty of living the Gospel, even people of good will have conflicts! The Church has disagreements within herself. This has been the case from the beginning. In the letters of Paul, we see him writing to churches who disagree on how to best live the Gospel in everyday life. And different teachers went to cities after Paul and sometimes preached conflicting messages on who Jesus was. When we encounter people who disagree with us - on topics large and small - we must remember basic Christian values. Respect and compassion are critically important. We need to be good listeners to grasp another person's perspective. This dialogue doesn't mean we compromise our values or deny the truth. We may still disagree, but our conversation can be a lot more civil if we try to understand each other! Presentation of the Lord Jesus is the Messiah who institutes a new covenant with his people, but he was raised as a practicing Jew by his devout parents. Jewish tradition held that firstborn male children were to be presented at the Temple and a sacrifice offered 40 days after his birth. Luke's Gospel tells the story of this sacred event. His sacrifice on the cross and establishment of the Church lay the foundation for new traditions that continue to bring life to us today!
