"A great crowd of his disciples and a large number of people from all over Judea and Jerusalem and the coastal region of Tyre and Sidon." Disciples, pagans, and devout Jews gathered together to hear Jesus speak in the Sermon on the Mount. All of these people had something in common. God was someone to be bargained with, and if God liked you, you were rewarded with good fortune. This Sunday, Jesus tells us a different story. "Woe to you who are rich? who are filled now? who laugh? when all speak well of you. Blessed are you who are poor? you who are now hungry? when people hate you and when they exclude you and insult you." Jesus completely flips the script on what it means to be blessed by God. What he proclaims as "woe" are states of life we often strive for, and "blessed" are the states we work hard to avoid! Jesus is concerned with the kingdom of God and the world to come, not the typical structures of power and privilege. The word "now" appears often in these statements. Why? If you are well "now," that's beside the point. To be rich in this life has no direct bearing on your immortal soul. If you're struggling "now," that's not an indication that God has forgotten you or that - in light of eternity - you're worse off than someone else. In fact, it could be an indicator that you're enduring something that will bring you to a place of greater, eternal joy in the future. This Sunday, consider your priorities. Who do we reject as not blessed, and thereby inflict woe upon ourselves? When we encounter difficult situations in our own lives, do we see them as opportunities to remember God and lean on His mercy and grace? Cycles of the Faith WEEKLY STEWARSHIP February 10, 2019 Envelope Giving $1, Plate Giving $2, Online Giving $ Total $4, Funds needed to meet operations $5, Overage/Deficit -($769.81) ADORATION Wednesdays 8:30am-5:00pm Come spend an hour with Him or five minutes, your life will never be the same! Please pray for: Barbara Sefrian Fowler Family Joe Coppola Joey Coppola Julian Lorenzo Mary Ellen Hultquist Silvia Rodriguez Brigida McInvale Danny Helen & Buriel Smith Tomas & Carmen Chavez Danny Shoshani Socorro Martinez Margie Toland When I was a child, I often thought of the Church as something mystical and supernatural. I wasn't wrong in my understanding of the Body of Christ, for surely the Church has these characteristics. However, even though we speak about the foundation of all we are as Church being the "mystery of Christ," Jesus became a man so that supernatural element could break into the natural world in a profound way. What we once could not see, we now see. What we saw as a God in a distant place now dwelt among us. It is one of the aspects of Catholicism that I have grown to appreciate the most as I have matured: for a Catholic, the supernatural is natural. The communion of saints is heavenly and earthly at the same time. The Beatitudes instruct us about this reality. Pope Francis reminds us that holiness is "not about swooning in mystic rapture." Holiness is about living in the real world and doing extraordinary things with our ordinary lives. Our stewardship way of life consists of actions in the natural world that have extraordinary repercussions. Do not ever take your simple actions of generosity and love for granted. As disciples called to a life of stewardship, we participate in something more profound than what we can see. We are blessed to be called to follow Jesus, and we bring blessing to all those with whom we choose to share ourselves. -Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS

3 Calendar Month of February Feb 19th: 7-9pm Youth Gathering in Youth Room Feb 26th: 7-9pm Youth Gathering in Youth Room What is Pro Life? Are we sure we are 100% Pro Life? Part VI The Church teaches that all life is sacred and must be cherished and protected from conception to natural death. By keeping this guiding principle in mind in reviewing all the following moral issues of today, we can quickly see what it means to be 100% Pro Life, no exceptions. IVF, In Vitro Fertilization This literally means a process whereby human life is generated in a laboratory environment in a petri dish, separating human procreation from conjugal union. Only 10-20% of these embryos result in a normal pregnancy. What happens to the rest of all these new little lives? They are either unwanted and eliminated, (selective reduction), or stored and frozen, with only 2/3 of embryos surviving the frozen process. This is intentionally creating life, then destroying it because it was not wanted, needed or considered defective. There are other ethical and highly effective techniques for identifying and treating the causes for infertile couples. Na Pro technology has helped many couples conceive a child. The Pope Paul VI Institute in Omaha, Nebraska has been on the forefront of successfully helping many infertile couples diagnose the underlying cause for their infertility, resulting in a natural conception. If you believe that In Vitro Fertilization is wrong, then you are Pro Life on this issue. Joan Murray (Lucas Texas) "Compassion for the mother is extremely important, but is never served through destroying the innocent." Randy Alcorn, Pro Life Answers to Pro Choice Arguments A huge shout out to the Hispanic Group for their time, dedication, efforts and hard work putting together the Valentine s Dinner Dance. This event profited $2, towards the Church account. Thank you again. Hey. want to get some coffee? Saturday, March 2, :30AM Join us for a light breakfast and time to make some new connections and get to know your brothers in Christ better. The topic is: To accommodate the many commitments we have in our lives, the meeting will take place in Keenan Hall and last only an hour. For more information, please contact David Block at blockdavid@aol.com Peter Damian was a reforming Benedictine monk and cardinal in the circle of Pope Leo IX. Dante placed him in one of the highest circles of Paradiso as a great predecessor of Saint Francis of Assisi and he was declared a Doctor of the Church in His feast day is 21 February. Born: 1007, Ravenna, Italy Died: February 23, 1072, Faenza, Italy Feast: 21 February, earlier 23 February (General Roman Calendar, ) Marriage Enrichment Celebrate your sweetheart and give your marriage a Worldwide Marriage Encounter Weekend. Success, a comfortable life, and worldly securities are seen as what is needed to achieve happiness. Whether or not we like to admit it, these pursuits are operative in many of our lives. As much as we want to believe in the Gospel, we also find it hard not to cling to these other things. Unconditional trust in God must be first if we are going to perceive the kingdom of God. And while God does not want us to go out of our way to be miserable, Jesus clearly gives preference to those who are poor, hungry, weeping, marginalized, vulnerable, and despised. When people encounter these things, they touch God. It teaches us not to get too comfortable with our riches and that there is much more to true life than the stuff we find so important. Behold, your reward will be great in heaven." - Lk 6:22, 23b QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK First Reading The prophet Jeremiah urged his fellow Israelites from Judah to trust in divine providence rather than human wisdom. Why do you think believers today still trust people more than God? Second Reading Paul places our share in Jesus' resurrection from the dead as core to our Christian beliefs. What might you add to this list of our core beliefs? Gospel Reading We hear today of Luke's account of Jesus' Sermon on the Plain, which consists of both blessings and woes. Where do you see yourself in this mix of curses and blessings?

PATRICK S DAY PARTY 2019 You are cordially invited to the 2019 Adults-Only St Pat s Party on Saturday March 16. The party starts at 6PM with a social hour and dinner at 7PM. The St Pius X will furnish babysitting for those that want to attend and have children. Tickets will be on sale after each Mass. Tickets are $35 per couple and $20 per single if purchased in advance. Please get your tickets early - tickets at the door will be $30 per person. Dinner will feature corned beef and cabbage, vegetables and roasted chicken. WE will have a no-host bar, DJ with dancing at the completion of dinner and the auction. Please come out and support your parish while having a GREAT TIME! Random Act of Kindness Day is February 17th. Here are some ideas to surprise those around you. WHY DO WE DO THAT? Question: I've noticed that when I go to Mass at different parishes, sometimes people say and do different things. Why is that? Answer: The Mass in its current form has taken shape over the course of 2,000 years. Over time, traditions, structures, and prayers have been put into place. There are certain rubrics for the Mass that are normative wherever you go. This means you could attend Mass in Malawi or Thailand or Italy and still watch the same basic liturgy unfold, even if you don't understand the language. There may be some cultural differences from place to place, things that aren't specifically listed. For example, in the United States most people go up for Communion in a nice neat line. In Europe, everyone gets up around the same time. It's a bit of a free-for-all! Some people might take it upon themselves to change things individually. People may not like something that feels too "liberal" or "conservative," and they may take a well-meaning stance in the opposite direction. When people (including the presiders) do things that are distracting or change the liturgy, it introduces an element that breaks the unity of the assembled community. The important thing to remember is that we gather as the Body of Christ to celebrate the Eucharist. If you are confused, ask! If you are frustrated, pray for the spirit of charity. - Going through a drive-thru? Pay for the order of the person behind you. - Send a handwritten note to a family member or old friend. - Invite your neighbors over for appetizers, or bring them a sweet treat. - Complete a task your spouse has been bugging you about for months. - Offer a loved one a foot or back massage. - Bring your family's furry friend to visit a local nursing home. - Buy $5 coffee shop gift cards for your children's teachers. - Invite your parish priest over for dinner. - Bring a bag of groceries to a family in need.
