1 TRINITY LUTHERAN CHURCH NONPROFIT ORG 100 POPLAR AVENUE US POSTAGE PAID CARRINGTON, NORTH DAKOTA Carrington, ND Phone (701) Zip Fax (701) Permit No Pastor Bruce Vold: Parsonage: Cell Phone: Pastor Russ Christiansen: Cell Phone: KDAK (1600 AM) Broadcast at 11 a.m. WORSHIP 8:30 a.m. & 10:45 a.m. Office Hours: Mon - Fri 8am-5pm ADDRESS SERVICE REQUESTED SEPTEMBER 2013 FROM YOUR PASTORS Do you remember the old Michael J. Fox movie called "Back to The Future"? It was a fun play on time travel, and how events in the past have shaped our present and will impact our future. That's kind of the way I feel these days. It's back-to-school time, and time to get back into a routine with kids, families, school, work and church. I certainly hope and pray that people think of these days as back-tochurch time too. Summer has been fun, and it's flown by, but it's also good now to settle in to regular routines. Make Sunday worship of God a regular and important part of your life. Invite your friends! Bring your family! Get to know your neighbors in faith and fellowship! And together we will learn about the God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who forgives the sins of our past and present, and promises us a future full of faith, hope and love. THAT IS WORTH COMING BACK FOR. It's kind of like a trip back to the future - our future together in Christ! God bless you, Pastor Bruce 1

PARISH NURSE NUGGETS... from Holly Zieman, RN HEART ATTACK AND OTHER CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASES ARE AMERICA'S NO. 1 KILLER! Heart Attack Warning Signs: Some heart attacks are sudden and intense, but most of them start slowly, with mild pain or discomfort. Here are signs that can mean a heart attack is happening. * Chest discomfort. Most heart attacks involve discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts more than a few minutes, or that goes away and comes back. It can feel like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain. * Discomfort in other areas of the upper body. Symptoms can include pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach. * Shortness of breath. This feeling often comes along with chest discomfort. But it can occur with or without chest discomfort. * Other signs. These may include breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea or lightheadedness. IF YOU OR SOMEONE YOU'RE WITH HAS ONE OR MORE OF THESE SIGNS, CALL IMMEDIATELY. GET TO THE HOSPITAL RIGHT AWAY! Key differences in heart attacks between women and men: Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of men and women. But when women have a heart attack, they tend to be about 10 years older than men. Women are more likely to have other conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure and congestive heart failure - making it more vital that they get proper treatment fast. Unfortunately, women are less likely than men to believe they're having a heart attack and more likely to delay seeking emergency treatment. As with men, women's most common heart attack symptom is chest pain or discomfort. But women are more likely than men to experience some of the other symptoms such as shortness of breath, nausea/vomiting, or back or jaw pain. An automated external defibrillator (AED) has been purchased and is installed by our library. It is a life-saving piece of equipment that all of us need to learn to use. Please watch for an upcoming training class date in CPR and on how to use the AED in September. A sign-up sheet will be posted. If you, or someone you are with, has chest discomfort, especially with one or more of the other signs, don't wait longer than 5 minutes before calling for help! Call GET TO A HOSPITAL IMMEDIATELY! Parish Nurse Holly 2

3 Our church has medical equipment that has been donated to us. It is available to loan to anyone who needs it temporarily. There are walkers, canes, hi-rises, crutches, and shower chairs. 4 DID YOU KNOW? After a successful second year in the new food fair booth, the TLCW fair committee wanted to give a general description of how things went, and some areas of concern that have been mentioned. * We sold 1, % pure beef hamburgers in 3 days at this year's fair! * Trinity was the only food booth selling hamburgers this year! * People are so supportive of the booth, that sometimes orders of burgers are placed at one time! * 18 pies are sold each day, and we could sell more, but have difficulty having people signing up to make/bring pies. * 8 committee members spent all week on fair activities, sometimes working 14 hour days at the fair. * Many business members donated funds to assist in the purchase of supplies. We are very thankful for their support! * people are needed each day to run the food booth. Many people worked double and triple shifts so that we could function. * 80 lbs of potatoes and 12 dozen eggs are used to make the potato salad. * Macaroni salad is purchased pre-made from Super Valu, given that it tastes good, and we do not have enough workers to make it before the fair. * 2 gallons of pickles were used each day of the fair. * 426 hot dogs and 174 brats were sold. * Taco in a bag is a popular food item. (We didn't count how many we sold this year!) As a committee we feel this is an awesome opportunity for the church family to work together. The fellowship with our church family members is invaluable, as well as the service that we are providing to the community. The funds raised at the fair are used by the TLCW to support the work of the church and its members. Something that we felt the need to address was the difference in how the fair hamburgers are made now, as compared to "before". They do taste differently now that we are in the new building, and we want to explain why. First of all, they are still the same 100% pure beef hamburger patties that have been purchased for many years. These are the same burger patties that were used in the old building. We are still using the same cook top to grill them. What is different with the grill though, is that it was made to be an inside grill, and instead we are now using it outside and with propane tanks. Before, customers would watch as we made the burgers and placed them right onto their bun and handed it to them. You could smell the burger (and onions too!). Now because the grill is in the back, you no longer smell them cooking, nor see them being made. The layout of the building causes us to make the burgers, hot dogs and brats outside on the grill, then transport them into the back room. From there, 4 they are placed into a roaster to keep warm. There is some beef broth in the roaster so they do not dry out. The burgers rarely stay in the roaster for very long. Given that we have to make so many burgers, to supply the people, we need to just keep grilling, and cannot make them one at a time for individuals, as they were done in the past. Another difference has to do with how the burgers are served. We always had put the burgers on a little white plate to serve them in the past. Because of the distance from the grill to the customer, they were getting cold last year. So this year we placed them in burger bags from the Hiway Drive In. We felt that was a better method to keep things warm. Suggestions have been given to the committee, such as to patty up our own burger meat again. However, that is not realistic. We do not have the workers available, nor the refrigerator space, or containers to accomplish that task. Over the last couple of years, people have not been signing up for the food booth, but waiting for someone to call and ask them to commit to working a shift or bringing food. The committee met three evenings to make telephone calls to ask for donations and workers. This took a considerable amount of time. We wish there was an easier way to contact people to work and donate.

5 It is hard to find workers for the booth. There are lots of legitimate reasons why people are not able to work. But in the future, it is something that we ask members to consider. It is a great opportunity for confirmation students to earn a service point. It is especially easy for those young people to work if a parent joins them. That eases the tension of them being put into a position of a busy food service worker for the first time! Parents also had younger children working with them when they took a shift, and there is always room for them to work, and we encourage that. The new building is clean and has lots of room! It is a nice place for the food booth. It is a wonderful opportunity for our church family to work together on a project. It takes the majority of our families to contribute in some way in order for it to be successful. We appreciate all the time, talents, funds, and food that were donated to the fair food booth this year! 2013 Fair Food Booth Committee Come and join us the weekend of Rally Sunday. We will be learning about prayer and putting into practice what we believe as we pray for our church and the children of God. Scott Block Session 1: Two Builders Scripture Text: Matthew 7: ON SOLID GROUND Or Sinking Sand? By Judy Lake Jesus parables were His way of teaching us to know ourselves. His stories act upon us to reveal the thought and intentions hidden inside us. Sometimes, we don t even know! When we finally do realize our sins, limitations and need for Him, we are thankful for His grace. In order to do this, we re challenged to figure ourselves out! Session 1 is about the wise man and the foolish man. Into which category do we fit? Wise or foolish? I d say that sometimes we re a little of both. We re told that the word foolish basically comes from the word moron. So how am I not foolish? By building my faith on a solid foundation--a firm belief in Jesus and in His promises! Not a wishy-washy maybe He will and maybe He won t listen to me and have my best interests at heart. That s NOT a firm foundation. Can our faith withstand the trials and tribulations that come into our lives? Will we come through them still trusting that God loves us and is doing the best for us? In the end, are we becoming the persons He wants us to be? Are we better, not bitter? When we hear God s words, do we REALLY believe and TRUST that He is there for us? To ACT on that belief IS wisdom; to back off and make excuses is NOT trusting, not having faith and just plain foolish and moronic. The problem is that we only come to that wisdom when we finally realize that HE is in control; that only God can bring us through our dilemma. Do we, when we say we re Christians, actually LIVE that faith so others can see that we do? Is our faith built on solid ground or on sand? Can we stand on it throughout our lives? Has this parable spoken to our souls and changed our hearts and lives? Is our faith on solid ground? Answering these questions is figuring ourselves out. This is the reason for the parable, isn t it? Contrary to earlier reports, Trinity WILL be hosting a fall rummage sale this year. However, due to a wedding the same day, our rummage sale will be held at the Old Vet's Club. Be sure to check the Lost and Found near the office and in the kitchen to reclaim any of your property. Any unclaimed items will be put in the sale. 6
