1 POMPTON REFORMED CHURCH NEWSLETTER SEPTEMBER Hamburg Turnpike Pompton Lakes, NJ MOVING FORWARD--LOOKING AHEAD Dear PRC Family, First thing for this newsletter is a word of deep gratitude to our retiring editor, Liz Hanisch. With school, community. church and family activities upon Liz's plate, something needed to be retired. As you read this, pray that God will stir in the life of our next editor, whomever that may be, to carry-on this vital ministry. Thank-you, Liz, for a job wonderfully done...and for agreeing for this one final issue under your watch. Our fall season will be underway. Sunday school classes launch on September 11, and we will commission our teachers that day. Also on September 11 will be a reflective time of prayer, readings and music, beginning at 9:45 am. We will then flow into our morning worship, and continue the fall message theme of "No Holding Back," in Jesus' call to follow. On Wednesday, September 21, area houses of worship combine for an Interfaith Peacemaking Service--7:30 pm at St. Mary's Catholic Church here in town. You will be hearing more of this event in upcoming worship bulletins. On a regular basis, Pastor Debbie Rundecker and I meet to pray and think aloud and to dream. One key thing upon Debbie's heart is solid Christian education opportunities for youth and adults alike. Debbie has been faithfully teaching a Monday evening class, and there are topics both of us are eager to bring to the table. So keep your eyes peeled for new learning opportunities being offered in months ahead. Already we are excited over Advent themes, when the first leaf has not yet fallen from a tree. Prior to Advent, we have our booth at the September 4 Pompton Day, and then Autumnfest. Consistory will lead worship on November 20, followed by a soup luncheon. December 3 & 4 holds the mystery Dinner Theatre--a new venture for the PRC family, and actors are already in rehearsal. One healthy thing for all of us to remember when we gather is "the three minute rule." In the first three minutes after worship, or when you arrive, look for a new face, or someone whom you do not know. Take a moment to introduce yourself, or to extend a word of welcome. Even saying, "You know, I see you week after week, and I should know you, but I don't," is a great way to begin a new friendship. If visitors return to worship, the central reason cited over and over is that they were made to feel welcome. It is vital. Thanks for helping to make it happen, and thanks for your part in "striving to build a church where every person knows Jesus, and believes he or she can make a difference for Jesus' sake." Serving with you, Pastor Tom Bartha 1

Dear PRC Family, Thank you so much for the cards, calls and concern for Mom and me during my fall, surgery, and now recovery. I am able to do some things now and therapy is going very well. I think Mom and I both felt all the love in every card and call. Thanks to Ed & Elena for Communion and Pastor Tom for his visit with flowers from Mary in hand it really lifted my spirits. Thanks to JoAnn and Betty for the feast they send over. A special thanks to Shirley Shaw for taking me to St. Joseph s in Paterson for my surgery and staying with Mom during the whole procedure and bringing me safely home again. We are both very lucky that GOD has surrounded us with such a loving church family especially Joannie Warner who shopped for us and gave me tips on what to expect during therapy! Love, Elaine Peacock To My Church Family Words can t express how much the cards, phone calls and prayers helped me through Joes last days. I especially want to thank Tom & Elaine Peacock for being with us at a very crucial time. Also Cathy Csencsits and Elena Van Schaack for their visits. Prayers are so important and have helped me a great deal Thank you Shirley Shaw & Family Dear Church Family 6

7 Thank you so much for the scholarship! It will definitely be helpful in my continuing education and it is greatly appreciated! I am so grateful that I can continue my relationship with Christ with such a wonderful church family. Much love, Christin Warner Dear Scholarship Committee & Church Family Thank you very much for the generous scholarship you have awarded me. You can be assured the award will be put to good use as I pursue my education at Bloomsburg University in PA. Whether it goes towards books or other academic materials, the scholarship will help defray the cost of my education, and for that I am very grateful Receiving this scholarship from my church family means so much to me. Again, thank you so very much. Sincerely, Caleigh Magee FROM OUR MEMBERS VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL - WHAT IS IT? It s prayer, worship, music, joy, singing, jokes, laughter, snacks, study, play, crafts, old friendships and so much more. As a child of Pompton Reformed Church, I attended Vacation Bible School and then graduated to helper. I remember the fun, study and crafts fondly. I know one year I made a Bible cover. Ahhh, so many, many, MANY years ago. This year I found myself in the position of being able to volunteer as the 5th and 6th grade teacher. Starting this week with one girl and 4 boys, then 6 boys and no girl, we ended up knowing and sharing a little more about each other. They gave me new insight to God s messages with their learning, and the prayers were so special. Did you know that a good part of PRC s Vacation Bible School includes children and volunteers from several churches and communities? Did you know Roben Roon, JoAnn Sisco, Angie Norman, Kay Bergin, Mary Bartha, Lorna Carroll, Fran Bierwas, Jim Laux, Donna Doyle, Evan Maletsky, Janine Maletsky Hayes with Jonathan and now Jackson, plus the most creative snack server, Wendy Simon, I ve ever seen have been volunteering for years? Without that constant core of volunteers, things would not go as smoothly. HOWEVER I was amazed at how organized Liz Hanisch has the week. She has created an atmosphere of confidence, comfort and excitement for the children. Liz leaves no stone unturned and is prepared for any situation and handles anything that comes along with grace, respect and the proper urgency. THANK YOU LIZ! I feel so blessed to have participated in PRC s Vacation Bible School. It is an experience that anyone should enjoy. Lynn Scarmazzo September Sojurn By Elaine Peacock Now that summer is officially over and the school bells are calling the kids back to school, this is the perfect time for a September Sojourn. How about a trip to your favorite Jersey shore town? The weather is cooler, the crowds are gone, and that ocean view table is waiting for you. 7

8 Or how about a ride in the country? The roads are empty and that favorite country restaurant has reserved a table just for you. So enjoy the last gasp of summer, if you listen closely you can hear autumn calling, but with a touch of left over warmth. GOD invites us to enjoy his late summer world so take GOD up on his invitation; it will lift your spirits and warm your heart. September Shore Days By Elaine Peacock I think September at the Jersey shore is one of the best times of the year. The crowds are gone; it is still beautiful enough for a walk on the beach or boardwalk, and heat of the summer is giving away to warm days and cooler nights. The sky is bluer, the hazy humid skies of summer are disappearing; the sounds of the squawking gulls can be heard above the waves as they crash on the beach. It is just a more relaxing time. Your favorite summer time eateries are less busy and you have a better chance of getting an ocean view table. So give yourself a treat take a day or two and head for your favorite spot at the Jersey shore and enjoy a special September Shore day. Made In Heaven & Created With Love By God Submitted by Helen Gioia Written by Holley Gerth You are formed by God's Hands, dreamed up in His Heart and placed in this world for a purpose. There is no one else like you --- You are one of a kind, irreplaceable. God has given you everything you need and created you just as you need to be to make a difference in your own wonderful way. So, go for it. The world is waiting and Heaven is cheering you on. SIGHT & SOUND INFORMATION The Fellowship Committee is sponsoring a trip to the Sight and Sound Theater in Lancaster, PA to see their newest production: "Jonah." The date is April 28, 2012, a Saturday with show time at 1:00 pm and an "all-youcan-eat" fantastic meal following the production. We have reserved the space for a busload and we were told at that time, that the show was already 3/4 booked! The cost for everything is $ per adult and, of course, considerably less for children and teens. We are trying to firm up our list of who's going and have all money in by the end of September. The sooner we get the money to them, the sooner we have secured our choice seating. If at all interested, please sign the sign-up sheet in Fellowship Hall as soon as possible. We will be promoting this throughout the summer. From past experience (2 previous trips), this will be a wonderful family event. For any more information, please don't hesitate to ask any of us on the Fellowship Committee. Though it seems so far in advance, this theater and it's fabulous productions are so popular, they book up very quickly. Besides, you'll have something very special to look forward to for the next few months! We hope you'll consider joining us and become one of our growing number of "alumnae!" Round Table of Thanks Robert Barrett, for his summer mid-week Bible study for youth Co-ordinator Liz Hanisch, and all the VBS volunteers for the great Summer Beach Bash week John Nelson and the crew from Philips, for the steeple lighting. (If you've not yet driven by PRC at night, it's a great view!) 8
