4 Stephen Minister of the Month Karen Dickson is a New York state native, having been born in Saranac Lake. Her father moved a lot, and so Karen lived in several towns in this area, but went back to high school in Saranac Lake. Karen has a best friend from when she was two years old in Saranac Lake and has fantastic memories of those early years. Karen attended Ellis Hospital Nursing School. While there she met her husband Rob, who went to Union, on a blind date. They became best friends and eventually married. Rob s work took them to Norwalk, CT. There Karen worked 5 part time jobs and raised two children while Rob had his own business; life was hectic. Finally, they decided to sell the business and move to Schenectady. We are fortunate that they came back! Karen enjoys Union Hockey, walking, cooking and reading. Two local grandchildren and four Long Island grandchildren are also prime sources of enjoyment. Currently Karen is working in Latham with Dr. Fox, a dermatologist. Karen has participated with Dr. Fox and others in five mission trips to Mexico and the Dominican Republic, where their team goes to remote areas to treat children with Cleft Palate, etc. Karen reports these have been extremely rewarding and eye opening experiences. The same proclivity that drew Karen towards nursing was operative in her attraction to Stephen Ministry. She has been a Stephen Minister for over ten years, having been trained and commissioned in She especially enjoys being with all the other Stephen Ministers. The mission of SM is fabulous, she says, for it helps others cope with life s challenges. 6 The Messenger Union Presbyterian Church (518) Clerk s Corner by Marilyn Leach Clerk of Session At the April 1 st UPC Session meeting, the Rev. Thomas Gregg moderated, and FRC Senior Minister the Rev. Bill Levering and Albany Presbytery Partnering Team members Laura Rogers and the Rev. Viki Brooks were present. Gay Doolittle and Ronnie Bartholic attended as representatives of the First Reformed Church. The Session acted to authorize fundraising activities on behalf of eleven teenagers attending this summer s REACH Workcamp trip to North Carolina. The UPC Women s Association has promised $250 toward the expenses of each youth, and additional money will be earned through activities such as bake sales, a car wash, a silent auction, or sales of mission shares. The Session acted to continue our subscriptions to Presbyterian Outlook and Presbyterians Today. These magazines are on display in the hallway outside FRC s library. The Session also acted to contribute $50 again this year for an ad in CommUNITY magazine, and to have Union Presbyterian Church listed among welcoming congregations in the Pride Parade brochure and on the PresRainbow website. FRC s Senior Minister, the Rev. Bill Levering, offered that he and the Rev. Daniel Carlson and the Rev. Stacey Midge are available to take Communion to UPC Special Care members, accompanying the Deacons who regularly visit these people. He also noted that art works belonging to both UPC and FRC are being hung in Friendship Hall and throughout the church building. The Session requested that the UPC Mission Funding Committee and the UPC Foundation Committee meet jointly to prepare a draft proposal for the possible use, preservation, and allocation of UPC Foundation holdings for the Session to consider at its next meeting. The joint meeting was subsequently scheduled for April 30. The Session plans to make a proposal to Albany Presbytery on these financial issues. At the April 13 th First Forum, FRC and UPC members met to discuss how our Joint Congregational Witness is going and how to proceed with our relationship in the future. Members of both congregations expressed much enthusiasm about the advantages of our joining together. The only problems mentioned were problems that churches everywhere would be delighted to have: We might need to move our after-worship refreshments to a larger room, and we might need to find even more parking spaces than we have already secured in the church neighborhood. People asked when we could become one unified congregation. The Rev. Jim Miller, retired Executive Presbyter of Albany Presbytery, was asked to comment on how UPC and FRC could be joined together. He explained that Presbyterian polity now allows a congregation in Joint Congregational Witness to be transferred to a denomination with which the Presbyterian Church is in full communion. This means Albany Presbytery could dismiss Union Presbyterian Church to the Reformed Church in America with the approval of the Schenectady Classis. If this were to occur, the Schenectady Classis could then approve a merger of what would now be two Reformed churches, with the merged congregation continuing to be known as the First Reformed Church of Schenectady. He believes such a merger could be effected before the end of Discussion participants showed much interest in this plan. Albany Presbytery s Committee on Ministry has sent a request to the Session to prepare a written report for the June 6-7, 2014, Presbytery meeting. Ten minutes will be scheduled at the meeting for UPC representatives and the Rev. Bill Levering to describe our Joint Witness and our hopes for the future. It is anticipated that at least two meetings of the Presbytery would be needed before a decision would be made to approve changes in our relationship. Congregational input and approval of these steps will be sought in special congregation meeting(s) to be scheduled as information is gathered. The next meeting of the Session will be on May 6, 2014, to continue to work on these plans. We remember in our prayers Lil Roe, continuing with series of eye injections Kate Rose, to have surgery in May Linda VanAlstyne, dealing with recurrence of cancer Dottie Graham, with a minor health concern Kathy Lucas, colo-rectal cancer In Memory Of A memorial service for John Hillers, longtime member and former custodian of UPC, will be held on Saturday, May 10, at Scotia Reformed Church. Please remember his wife, Grace, and John s family and friends in your prayers.

7 UPC Chat & Chew May 1 UPC s eldest member, Lil Roe, invites all UPC members to join her once a month at her home. On Thursday, May 1, Lil invites members to bring a bag lunch and fellowship together in her home. Please plan to join her at 12 noon at 1192 Hedgewood Lane, Niskayuna. Call her at for directions. Art Celebration Visit Friendship Hall to see an array of some of the art work This is an exhibition of some of the art work belonging to our two congregations. Using a variety of media and techniques it is a visual expression of celebration and worship made meaningful by many different artists over the years. So much of this art work has a story to tell as depicted in the subject of that particular piece. Then there are others that have stories of their own to tell Where did it come from? Why is it here? How can we make the best use of it today? All are part of the story of so many lives of the people of our congregations. It is part of our heritage and reminds us of who we are and why we are a church. Office Closed May 26 for Memorial Day Senior Moments Bill Levering We had a full boat for Easter and it was a wonderful worship experience. Thanks to all the musicians and leaders that made it happen. Parking seems to have gotten better now that the YWCA has graciously shared their close lot. Thank Rowie Taylor for this when you see her. Things are moving ahead to bring the Presbyterian and Reformed congregations together in a seamless fashion. I expect some resolution within a year. I continue to be amazed at how smoothly our congregations mesh in worship, fellowship and mission. Those of you who try and elbow your way into Assembly Hall after worship lately know that we really need to get an elevator in place so that everyone can enjoy the much larger Friendship Hall downstairs. I hope you will be able to help us in this when we put together the project. May will bring several choral concerts and I hope you get a chance to enjoy them. Our culture in increasingly individualistic and choral singing is a great celebration of the beauty of cooperating. Check this newsletter for all your chances. Julie Panke is still looking for hosts for one night and a breakfast for our visiting college choir from Central College. We need about 15 more hosts. As for other needs, May is when we fill out forms and nominate people for church office. It's no secret that these nomination forms are very influential in the process and that the more people that suggest more people the better things work out. It's not just that a name is submitted, but if several folks feel the same way, it takes on greater significance. This spring has been a great relief from the blustery winter we had. In the New Testament, there was a strange hiatus between the excitement of Easter and the focused energy of Pentecost. The disciples were a bit confused and joyous and didn't know what to do about it. In the same way,. the warm days of spring may give us energy and a desire for engagement without clear direction. I hope in this season of sprouting, we may all reach for the Son in helpful ways. Pentecost June 8 Celebrate the Spirit s presence, power, and peace among all.
