Palm Sunday This celebration of the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem marks the beginning of Holy Week. Music on this joyous day will feature youth and children at 10am. Christian Seder on Holy Wednesday Our congregation will combine with the State Street Presbyterian Church congregation to get a deeper understanding of Jesus' Last Supper with an experience of the Seder meal. Please arrive at 6pm at FRC in Schenectady and bring a dish to pass. Maundy Thursday Tenebrae Service at Union Presbyterian Church First Reformed has long celebrated a service of darkening on Maundy Thursday in which the Lord s Supper is celebrated; then a series of readings and a darkening sanctuary create a somber and reflective remembrance of the trials of Jesus. The service begins at 7:30pm. Good Friday At noon on Good Friday Gospel readers, intercessors, and the chancel Choir will help lead this reflective service. Easter Sunday On Easter Sunday join us for the grand celebration of Easter Joy at 10am including the Hallelujah Chorus. Classes 6pm ~ Dinner 7pm ~ Classes 8:15pm ~ Evening Prayer Original Blessing Rev. Daniel Carlson & Kitty Trimarco In anticipation of the visit of the internationally-known theologian Matthew Fox to Schenectady and FRC in April, we'll discuss one of Fox s most influential books, Original Blessing. Copies may be purchased ($12) at any Wednesday dinner or picked up today in the Faith Bookshop. Lenten Study on Prayers Rev. Ruth Kuo This Lenten Study on Prayers will provide discussion and practice of a few prayer models for pausing in our hectic lives. Lent For Kids Jamie Ipsen For children in grades K - 8, a class full of art projects, music, and stories. Articles of Faith Rev. Dr. Bill Levering In this class, we will literally hand out newspapers and discuss where the Gospel might apply. Issues of justice and social witness will be addressed and social problems will be attacked from a Christian perspective. Learn the Art of Pysanky Rev. Abby Norton-Levering Decorating eggs the Ukrainian way. The slow process of creating the intricate designs on these colorful eggs is both meditative and satisfying.

2 Easter Flowers Delivery We need volunteers on Easter Sunday, March 31, to deliver Easter flowers to recently-bereaved and home-bound church members. The flowers, an addressed card for each recipient, and a Sunday bulletin will be available for pick up after the service. Members of the Support and Care Committee will be present to assist. Please plan now on participating in this ministry by extending a lovely symbol of God's faithfulness! Easter Reception We need volunteers for our Easter reception in Friendship Hall. People to help set up on Saturday, as well as people to make food. We would like deviled eggs, cheese and crackers, dip and chips, and cookies and candies. Please call the church office to join in on the fun. March 10 If you are interested in finding out more about the church or know someone who is, this is just the meeting for you! Dr. Levering meets with people interested in joining and helps them get to know the church. Class begins at 3pm starting in the church office. Lenten Dinner Volunteers Needed Volunteers are needed to assist with set up and clean up for the Wednesday evening Lenten dinners, through March 20. Contact Heather Chestnut at Easter Offering Schenectady Day Nursery Our Easter offering this year will support the Schenectady Day Nursery located on Lafayette St. in downtown Schenectady. The nursery was founded in 1902 by a group of church women to address the needs of working mothers. SDN s mission today is To provide a special place where even the youngest child feels safe and has the opportunity to grow and learn in a caring environment. SDN serves 125 families per year and offers care for infants, toddlers, pre-k, and elementary school children with a variety of programs. They operate about $1000 short of need for every child and make up the difference with government funding, donations, and fundraisers. Government funding cuts are having a real impact. SDN sliding fee rates run from $125-$240 per week for each child, based on the child s age and family income. Additional information will be provided at an Adult Forum in March. Refurbished Prayer Chain Our congregation's Prayer Chain has recently been updated and reorganized to carry on its ministry of interceding for those in need. If you have a concern, which you would like others in the church to offer to God in prayer, call either of our Lead Links, Ann Gotwals ( ) or Vernetta Theuner ( ). Groups Group V and Group VII Both groups will meet together on Friday, March 15 at 10am in the Dirck Romeyn Room. Refreshments and coffee will be served. 3 JH&SH Youth Schedule Unless otherwise noted, the JHYG (grades 6-8) meets every Sunday at 5pm in the Mezzanine for dinner, games, and discussion. The SHYG (grades 9-12) meets every Sunday at 7pm in Assembly Hall for snacks, discussion, and games. Friends are always welcome. March 24: Regular meetings Confirmation Reservation Bill Levering and Stacey Midge lead the confirmation process which is a combination of challenges and meetings that will begin this year on April 7 at noon (after the Forum on Sunday). Game Night For Everyone This Saturday Come join us for an evening of grub and games in Assembly Hall on March 2 at 6pm! Enjoy food, fellowship, and beating someone else's sister or grandpa in a variety of non-combative board games. Sign-up today in Assembly Hall or call the church office to let us know you're coming. Mission Shareholders Dinner April 14 The Senior High Youth Group extends a warm thank you to all who helped raise money for their mission trip to Staten Island! For those who purchased Mission Shares, there will be a dinner on April 14 at 6pm in Friendship Hall. The youth will speak about their experiences, show a video and pictures of the trip, and serve a meal that is representative of some of the cuisine they experienced in the diversity of New York City. It is not too late to purchase a Mission Share for $25 to contribute to the mission trip fund and attend the dinner! Just contact Stacey Midge or any member of the youth group to donate at any time. College Scholarships Applications for the Rev. Al Smith Education Scholarship are available through the Church Office. Mission Trip Returns The youth group is back from their mission trip to Staten Island, and we had a great time! Nineteen youth and four adults from FRC joined seven youth and five adults from Niskayuna Reformed Church for a week of service in the city. We served meals, worked at a food pantry, and learned a lot about poverty and hunger through Project Hospitality, our host agency. We also mucked out houses that had been damaged by Superstorm Sandy, put up new drywall, painted, and helped coordinate information about needs and volunteers with the Occupy Sandy movement and the Rebuild Staten Island Project. Thank you to all of you who supported us this year by buying pies, attending our Chili Cook-Off and Auction, or purchasing a mission share. You are invited to hear more about our trip at our Mission Shareholders Dinner (see article.) We hope to see you there! Kinderwyck We are looking for helping hands and arms to play with toddlers and rock babies from 9:50-noon each Sunday. 4 Kerygma Join us from 9:30-11am each Wednesday of Lent. We are continuing our practice of Lectio Divina as we seek to discern God s invitation to ongoing reformation in who we are and what we do. Capital Region Theological Center Courses CRTC provides ecumenical theological education, support for clergy, training for ministry, and resourcing services for congregations. Musicians of Ma'alwyck On Saturday, March 30 at 3pm, at the First Reformed Church in Schenectady Musicians of Ma'alwyck will present a special concert with 5 vocal soloists, organ and string quartet titled the Seven last Words of Christ. The program features settings by Franz Josef Haydn, Heinrich Schutz and Alan Ridout and will be accompanied by a compelling visual presentation of images of Christ by visual artists throughout the centuries. Haydn composed his setting of the Seven Last Words in the late 1780s, and the work became one of his most popular. The piece was written to be performed on Good Friday. The composer drew upon his deep faith to write music of stunning efficacy and drama. Each melody reflects the exact declamation of the vocal phrase and projects heartfelt anguish as Christ suffers on the Cross. Schutz, writing his Seven Last Words more than a century earlier, draws upon a vocal approach to tell the story of the Crucifixion. Ridout, writing appealingly and virtuostically for the organ offers an entirely different approach. The performance, presented without intermission, will also feature Pastor Levering providing narrative. Tickets are available at the door or by reservation at Adults $25 and students $10. There are a few free tickets for First members available at the church office. SAFE Inc. As SAFE Inc. has for nearly thirty years, we will continue to provide shelter and advocacy for homeless young people throughout the city of Schenectady and the capital region, and, as always, we need your support. SAFE House has spent all of the last month at full capacity, or beyond capacity, without a bed to spare for some of the neediest young people in the community on several extremely cold nights. February was especially cold and nasty, with none of the reprieves from cold weather that we received during late December or throughout January and even though we hope that March will likely bring warm weather, it will certainly bring at least a little more frozen misery. As such, we need any donation of warm clothing you can make it will be put to good use in short order. We are also in need of any and all hygiene products. If you can donate soap, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, washcloths, towels, bath mats, bar soap or any beauty products, they will also go to great use. Finally, if you have time, and an inclination to volunteer, we can use you in nearly any capacity you could suggest. If you are interested please talk to our Missioner to SAFE Inc., Mr. Daniel Stone. 5 Meet Your Church Van Hello! I am your church van. You know, that big white one that you sometimes see in the parking lot on Church St.? Although I can hardly blame you if you haven't seen me lately; I've been very busy for the last couple of years. You probably know that I can often be found shuttling teenagers around town, and every February to farther away locations like Toronto and New York City. Every month, I'm filled up with boys and their gear when our church Boy Scout troop goes camping. I deliver food to the SICM Emergency Food Pantry and clothes to Bethesda House. I've hauled landscaping supplies for SAFE House, furniture for Patty's Place, and books for the library's used book store. But where I've really been putting on the miles is bringing supplies and volunteers to areas that were affected by Hurricane Irene and Superstorm Sandy. In 2011, I made 5-6 trips per week for three months to Rotterdam Junction, Schoharie, and Prattsville. In 2012, I was kept busy bringing loads of batteries, candles, food, blankets, and cleaning and building materials to Staten Island, Long Island, Brooklyn, and New Jersey when those affected by Sandy didn't have access to necessary supplies. When the gas stations were still closed, I helped get donations to the places where they would be most useful. Now that supplies are readily available in those areas, you'd think I'd be getting a bit of a rest, but my work is never done. Aside from driving the youth group around Staten Island on their mission trip, I'm also transporting a group of Amish men to Schoharie so that they can help rebuild homes, and occasionally bringing YWCA clients to appointments. I always seem to be running these days, but I'm happy to be useful as part of the mission of my church, and hey, it's better than sitting alone in the parking lot! Take a Stand Is there some social issue that makes your blood boil? A concern about our community that you d like to voice your opinion about? Then get on the Justice Action Council Soapbox. This is your chance to make a 10-minute rant and spark some lively conversation among a friendly crowd. We have just a few rules about time and topic. The Soapbox takes place on an occasional basis in Poling Chapel after Sunday service. We ve got openings for ranters coming up. Catholic, Reformed Churches Agree on Baptism Adelle M. Banks (RNS) Leaders of Catholic and Reformed churches have signed an agreement to recognize each other s sacraments of baptism, a public step toward unity among groups that are often divided by doctrine. Baptism establishes the bond of unity existing among all who are part of Christ s body and is therefore the sacramental basis for our efforts to move towards visible unity, reads the Common Agreement on Mutual Recognition of Baptism. Signers represented the Christian Reformed Church in North America, Presbyterian Church (USA), Reformed Church in America, Roman Catholic Church, and United Church of Christ. It states that water and a reference to the Trinity Father, Son and Holy Spirit are required for the mutual recognition of baptisms.

6 Yoga at FRC Every Thursday at 6:45pm FRC now offers yoga in Assembly Hall. The instructor, Douglas Goodbee, is certified in Kripalu/Hatha E-RYT who also teaches athletic yoga at the Schenectady YMCA. These classes are open to the public at $10 per session, but active and adherent members of FRC are free! You will have the opportunity to learn yoga postures and breathing and have fun while doing it. The class is for all levels and you can come on a regular basis or just drop in when you can. Wear comfortable clothing and bring a mat. If you have never done yoga, this is a great opportunity to learn more about yoga or just to observe. This class is for everyone, singles, families, and seniors. Children must be with a parent or guardian. If you have any questions about this class please contact Douglas at: or dagoods1@gmail.com. Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Take control of your physical and psychological health. The 8-week Meditation Course will meet at FRC in Assembly Hall. This course is designed to reduce distress associated with chronic pain, reduce anxiety and panic, and improve physical disorders associated with anxiety and stress. We'll view a lovely DVD highlighting the community and its stunning facility, Church of the Transfiguration, as well as outline the cost, format, leadership, and retreat theme, Finding Your Location on the Tree of Life. Help Celebrate Nijkerk's 600 Years This year is the 600th anniversary of Nijkerk, the Netherlands, birthplace of Schenectady's founder, Arendt Van Curler. Join an adult exchange from Schenectady to Nijkerk, June 27 to July 11, and participate in commemorations honoring Nijkerk. FRC will appreciate being represented. July 25 to August 5 is another exchange, with Nijkerk youth coming to Schenectady. Be a host family, help with tours and other activities. Chancel Memorial Flowers The Chancel Guild has a flower calendar for 2013 on the right side of the Poling House entrance to the sanctuary. We encourage you to choose an open date for donating flowers to remember a loved one or to honor a special event such as an anniversary, birthday, or graduation. Giving flowers is a wonderful way to pay tribute to loved ones as well as to beautify the sanctuary for worship and then to bring some cheer to members of the church family as the bouquets are distributed after the worship service. After signing up on the calendar, please inform the office of your wishes so records can be kept correctly. If the date you want is already taken, it may be possible to share the chosen date by consulting with the other donor. Check with the office for availability of a particular date. The cost of the flowers is $30 for the two bouquets unless something special is requested. We hope that each Sunday, the Chancel Flowers will help us remember and give thanks for a person or an event special in the life of our congregation. Flowers are given by the Chancel Guild if not otherwise stated in the Sunday bulletin. Volunteers are also needed to prepare the Flowers to be delivered to our church members. 7 Communion Helpers Mary Jewett is preparing communion and invites people to help her. It only requires being here at 9am on a communion Sunday of your choice. This would be a great activity for a family or a group of friends and does not require a long term commitment. Call the church office to sign up. If you have lost/misplaced an item at church, please check this basket. Facilities Use Form(s) For church groups using the church s facilities, please make sure a Facilities Use Form is submitted to the church office no later than one week in advance. The forms are available in the church office, online at and in the Facility Use Forms mail-box out in the hallway. Senior Moments Bill Levering This year we have had a broader array of musicians in worship, especially during the prelude and postlude time. We started in September with Nat Phipps helping us out for several weeks on the piano and have had string quartets, jazz combos, acapella groups, and guitar trios as well as our own talented string players. We have gotten feedback after worship all along the way, and it turns out that this variety of quality music is popular with the congregation. We have also learned that it is still important to have the music be sensitive to the worship context of the season or the day. Julie Panke has done a fine job of working with this diversity and scheduling all the many talented groups we have with us in worship. You can expect to see the same sort of quality diversity continuing. We are also starting to see an increase in things that are happening on Sunday mornings. While we want to be wary of doing business right after worship, there may be more opportunities for small support groups, new member orientations, and focused study groups while we have child care provided. Most folks will continue to go to the fellowship time and then to the Forum right after worship. I m thinking of starting another Bible study much like the one that happens at 7:30am on Thursdays. I know that not everyone is prepared to be up talking about important things at that hour. If you would be interested in a Bible study that lasts about an hour that begins with an investigation of part of our life together before we go to the Bible, let me know. The study is usually on the passage for the upcoming sermon, so the people who go to the class get more out of the whole service because of it. Coffee and snacks seem to help. Our array of Easter week services will be the same this year with one exception. The Maundy Thursday Tenebrae service will be held at Union Presbyterian Church on Park Place this year. The Tenebrae Service is near and dear to us, and we have already lined up some folks to recite scripture at the 2013 service in our sanctuary. Last year the Wednesday Seder took place at State Street Presbyterian, but it returns to our Assembly Hall this year. If you have never been to a Seder, this is an opportunity to see the Jewish roots of the communion service and to gain new insights about Jesus final days. It s a family friendly event where food figures highly, so bring the kids and a dish to pass. By the way, if you don t have the time to bring a home-cooked dish to any church event, I will share a secret: pizza is very popular. People who stop off and pick up a pizza as their contribution to a church dinner rarely take any leftovers home with them. Finally, I wish you blessings in this season as it leads up to Easter. There is great joy in our faith tradition, but this joy is in the context and understanding of human brokenness. Our journey to Easter is the journey of darkness to dawn because that is usually the way our life goes. We all have bumpy time, dark moments. Through Christ, we are able to understand that this is not life s final answer. May the Easter hope bring you through the dark times of your life. Sincerely,
