Music on this joyous day will feature youth and children at 10am. Maundy Thursday Tenebrae March 24 First Reformed has long celebrated a service of darkening on Maundy Thursday in which the Lord s Supper is celebrated; then a series of readings and a darkening sanctuary create a somber and reflective remembrance of the trials of Jesus. The service begins at 7:30pm. Helping Out This Easter Give Chancel Memorial Flowers Each Easter, members of Chancel Guild adorn our church with beautiful Easter flowers. Your family can contribute to remember a loved one or honor a loved one. Don Stake - 2/21/16 Memorial Service 4/23/16 at 11am at Delmar Presbyterian Church Memorial Service for Jean Brown April 16 at 2 pm in Poling Chapel Easter Offering to One Great Hour of Sharing One of many blessings of our combined congregations and ministry is the One Great Hour of Sharing offering. It all began in 1949 with a radio broadcast where Protestant churches made appeals for relief and reconstruction in areas devastated by World War II, and it has developed over the decades into a truly ecumenical effort to share Christ s love to those in need. This cause, beloved by Union folks, is directed to 3 important causes. The Hunger Program works to alleviate hunger throughout the world and supports ministries addressing homelessness and affordable housing. The Disaster Assistance Program provides disaster response locally, nationally, and throughout the world. Self-development of People partners with groups that assist those oppressed by poverty or social systems to help people take charge of their lives. Please share your resources to change lives with this offering on Easter Sunday, March 27. Jubilee USA Considered The consistory is considering a proposal to become a supporting congregation of Jubilee USA. Jubilee is an alliance of more than 75 US organizations, 550 faith communities, and 50 Jubilee global partners. Jubilee is building an economy that serves, protects, and promotes participation of the most vulnerable. Jubilee has won critical global financial reforms and more than $130 billion in debt relief for the world's poorest people. Find out more at

5 First Futures Campaign Hundreds of Details The First Futures Planning Team met recently to discuss the second phase of design for renovating our buildings. This planning process will take place while the fund raising effort is ongoing, so that later this spring the total of all gifts to the campaign can come into alignment with the renovation opportunities. From the conceptual plan presented in the fall, the Planning Team must now move to the hundreds of details and recommendations which will be actually included in bidding documents to be sent out this summer or fall. To make congregational input better for these important stages, each standing committee has been asked by the consistory to appoint a representative to a newly renovated Planning Team. Thoughts, affirmations, concerns, and observations from the congregation will be channeled through consistory committees to the new Planning Team. If the Team cannot resolve an issue or feels an issue is too important to decide alone, the consistory will make the final choice. This spring, the architect will hold evening meetings that will focus on a defined specific space or a concept. For instance, there will be meetings focusing on the new children's education space, and there will be meetings on hospitality which might include issues of kitchen design. The consistory committees are: Archives and History; Worship and Arts; Justice Action Council; Youth Education and Nurture; Adult Education and Nurture; Care and Support; Membership and Fellowship; Finance; Mission and Benevolence; and Property. Fred Daniels and Lisa Ettkin First Futures and Christian Education As our congregation changes and expands and new generations begin their journey with Christ, we have something to celebrate. The generous efforts of the generations before us when combined with our own contributions will enable our congregation to renew and reinvent our Children s Worship Space. We will be welcomed into a bright, fresh, new location in the church that will have newly sheet-rocked walls, fresh bright paint, beautiful bright lighting, raised ceilings, and gorgeous new flooring. There will be new equipment for Kinderwyk and new technology capabilities for the Church School. We will have state of the art safety systems and plans to protect children with the utmost of care: new ventilation system, new sprinkler system, and multiple exit routes. There will be comfy cushions for reading on and new activities to bring our children closer to the teaching of Jesus. We are also looking into designating an out of doors space to include an engaging NEW PLAYGROUND! We believe these new developments will create an environment where our children will develop life-long friends and a feeling of family and belonging that will encourage them to find their way home here in the years to come. The teachers, Youth Education Committee, and I, as a whole, are very excited about the opportunities to come. We invite you all to ask questions or make suggestions to any of us to make sure your ideas are considered as we move forward with the details portion of the planning process. We hope that the congregation will come together as a whole and help encourage our young members to be excited and think about the ways in which they would like the space to improve and be more hospitable for them. Thank you all. With Strong hopes for a beautiful future, Blythe Czwakiel Children s Education Coordinator The following are the members of the Youth Education Committee: Sarah Bachorik, Brittany Bernardi, Blythe Czwakiel, Carol Dore, Jen Evans, David Hjelmar, Stacey Midge, Tom Mancuso, Adam Mason, and Barbara Walton

6 Lunn Cooperative Lunn Leadership Gatherings take place about every eight weeks in Assembly Hall from 1:30-3:00. Each Gathering is a mini-training session offering a topic and expert speaker to help non-profits learn to do their work more successfully. Topics have included Volunteer Recruitment and Training, Leadership Strategies, and Grant-writing. Who attends? Executive Directors, staff, and volunteers, all looking for ways to sharpen their skills and connect with other non-profit workers. More than 40 agencies have participated in these events, with many attending every time. What s coming up? On April 14, our own Fred Daniels will lead a Gathering called Marketing 101, which will be followed up by a more in-depth Marketing 201 workshop. On June 9, the focus will be Social Media for Nonprofits. The September 8 Gathering will highlight the work and training opportunities offered by the Schenectady Loan Fund. If you know of groups who d benefit from these sessions, please share this information, or let me know. All who work in 501(c)3 s are welcome. Registration is requested. Lynne Gilgore, Director Senior Moments "We plan, God laughs." - Yiddish proverb I write this in the midst of the waiting for my wife Abby to deliver a baby girl we have all been expecting for some time now. The child is now about a week late and has some explaining to do. There are many people who made all kinds of plans that centered on a birth last week. There are things to do, people to see. Let's get this show on the road! Now that I have that out of my system, let's review the facts: God's ways are not our ways. Other people's ways are not our ways. If there is any vehicle to express this fact to us, it is the arrival of a small child. They change the way we sleep, the way we eat. They are unpredictable and chaotic. And this is also how God arrives. It's not only a Christmas story, this arrival, but an Easter story. Resurrection will occur in an unexpected manner. Even though Jesus has talked about it often, the disciples were completely surprised by it. You may imagine that you know what needs to be changed in your life. God may have other ideas. I hope you will be able to make the Forum on March 6 to interact with Genghis Khan about Islam. Genghis has joined us many times, but this is an important moment to check in with our Muslim brothers and sisters. I hope I will be able to make it. The functional need for our renovations is becoming clearer every day. More people need closer access. More people can't get through the crowd at coffee hour. More people roll their eyes at the kitchen. We find more safety problems with our facilities. I am so glad we are working for the next generation. Good Number News. Jazz Vespers is taking off. We have had over 30 quite regularly and had 103 at the service on February 7. Avery Presents and the Word service are getting folks out. Adult Education is at a high water mark. Lots of good things here. Tune in. Confirmation class is starting up and youth have gotten some letters on this. If you are interested, please let me know. As of this writing, the youth mission trip to help migrants in Italy has come back safe and sound and has great stories to tell. I hope you are able to hear some of them. May all those parts of your life that need renovation feel the resurrecting power of Easter this year. - Bill Levering The Home Furnishings Program Our First Spring Sale! 7 Stephen Minister of the Month: Nancy Martin Nancy Martin has been in Public Health for years. She was born in Rochester and grew up in Pittsburgh as an only child. She went to Keuka College where she met her future husband, Bill, who traveled from Cornell to meet a Keuka girl. They were married in 1980 and moved to New Hampshire where she worked as a visiting nurse and with Hospice for 15 years. Bill s job brought them to our area in 1995; they settled in Valatie. Nancy and Bill have 3 children and 2 young grandchildren. Knowing a bit more of the Martin s story may explain the origin of their decision to make the lengthy commute from Valatie to Schenectady at least once a week. About the time when one of their daughter s was getting ready to be married, Nancy and Bill were getting ready to leave their former church. Since their daughter wanted a Stockade reception, Nancy and Bill decided to check out the churches in the Stockade, and eventually visited FRC. Both Nancy and Bill enjoyed meeting Bill Levering and listening to him preach. Nancy also especially appreciated our congregational covenant and they each found the church to be generous in spirit, accepting all kinds of people. Nancy still works in Public Health in Green County and is a Nurse Coordinator. She enjoys nursing and cooking as you may know if you received, before a recent worship service, a taste of the delicious Biscotti she baked to increase awareness of the youth mission trip to Italy. Nancy and Bill like to support their children in their endeavors. That means they help in their daughter s many theater productions, and Nancy also gets to help out with their grandchildren, now 3 and 5. In addition to serving as an active Stephen Minister, Nancy also serves on the Church Justice Action Council and the Chancel Guild. She walks the talk as she supports positive diversity, global issues, and racial reconciliation. She feels that her Stephen Ministry training and service has enhanced her nursing career skills. She thinks of herself in this role as a conduit of God s grace to meet the needs of others who are having a tough time in life. Finally, she readily notes, that she finds she receives much more than she gives to others. We are blessed to have Nancy as a Stephen Minister. Daniel s Doctoral Update In the middle of March I'll be back in Chicago to defend of my thesis article: "To Serve the World We Touch." I've been assured that this defense is not to be feared, but rather embraced as an opportunity to engage in a lively conversation about the focus of my work these past years in the presence of, and in dialogue with, other committed teachers of the church and practitioners of ministry. I imagine I'll be asked to explain the rationale for the ministry challenge and opportunity chosen; the conceptual frameworks used; the strategies employed for negotiating various impediments in order to move us towards greater faithfulness; what has happened, is happening, and evaluation of the same; and finally, an extrapolation of the potential significance of this work for others. Joining me at the defense will be many with whom I've shared this journey. I am also grateful for the prayerful support of this congregation who has been on this long trek with me--affirming, learning, challenging, encouraging, advising, collaborating, inquiring, correcting, and blessing. What a gift to have experienced the Spirit's sustaining grace with you, my dear brothers and sisters in the faith, as we seek to better serve this beloved and beleaguered world we touch. First Responders for FRC We held an organizational meeting in February. Team members include: Dr. Carolyn Jones-Assini, Medical Physician; Mark Karl, Fire Fighter Schenectady (Upper State Street Woodlawn): EMS, ACLS, CPR, AED certified; Carole Dore: EMS, CPR certified; George Davidson, retired Schenectady school teacher: CPR, AED certified, CPR instructor; Lauren Cleworth, Swim Coach: CPR, AED certified; Blythe Czwakiel, ER Nurse; Amy Brule, retired Oncology Nurse Our plan for FRC will include: Review, registration and training of our AED machine CPR classes for church members Infant CPR for Baptismal Buddies Parents Understanding the Deacon s emergency plan Writing a First Responders policy for FRC Compiling a binder for the church office containing the AED manual and a list of all First Responders Schedule a First Forum in the spring to review procedures & learn some basics of CPR. If you have an interest in taking CPR classes at FRC, please let the church office or any member of the team know. Our team welcomes any member who has passion about offering help during a medical emergency. Stephen Ministry Divorce Support March 17 On Thursday, March 17, at 6:30pm Stephen Ministry will host guest speaker, Katina Saxton, LMSW, presenting on the topic of divorce and how to care for those experiencing this crisis. The presentation is open to all within the congregation--and beyond; no registration required.
