1 Perry Peeper August 2018 Who Is Jesus? He is the reflection of God s glory and the exact imprint of God s very being, and he sustains all things by his powerful word. Hebrews 1:3a (NRSV) The He the writer of Hebrews refers to is, or course, Jesus. We hold Jesus as Savior (which is correct) and we place our faith in him to get me to heaven. For some folk, that s enough. As long as they get to heaven, Jesus has served his purpose for them. However, Jesus is more than we think. The New Testament advances a great deal more about Jesus than tickets to heaven. Stop and consider that Jesus has to be more than just a ticket to heaven if faith in him ultimately lands us in the very heavenly state we seek. Maybe what we really mean with our heaven talk is that Jesus is able to redeem us, sinners all, acceptable before a holy and righteous God. As the passage claims, he is the reflection of God s glory. The description is infinitely larger than a ticket to heaven. How much better to say: I have faith and Jesus is saving me in an ongoing journey. The Hebrews passage is a good checkpoint for disciples. Consider: the imprint of God s very being. What Jesus says and does is exactly as God the Father, and God the Holy Spirit, intends for us to perceive, live, and experience in order that our sinful lives transform for the good of God s reign. Jesus is God and God is more than getting to heaven! much more! The gospel message lived out ever transforms our lives towards the image of Christ. 2 ...continued from page 1 I must then wonder, what sense does it make when folk fail to advance along a disciple s path or, worse, ignore God completely? What sense concludes when folk decide that God is out to punish them? What sense develops when folk get mad at God for failing as a personal Divine vending machine. Well, these make no sense of course. All waste precious humanity. Perhaps you find yourself in one or more of the above unfortunate categories. The truth is, God will not change. God can and will still love and call you to maturity in Christ. However, if you choose to stagnate, ignore, or rant on God, please pause to consider another of Jesus dimensions: you are breathing! That s the sustains all things in the Hebrews passage. A new perspective I hope. Personal reflection is good just about now. The real ticket is to accept God s grace as encountered in Jesus and live out God s grace as a disciple who actually is getting to know and follow Jesus. While illness can make breathing labored and difficult, breathing remains a gift. Jesus invites you to use your gift for the Christ who loves you. Lord, save us from ourselves... 7 God Winks A few weeks ago, Pastor Scott sent me a text message asking if I would be willing to prepare a children s message using the story of Jairus (Mark 5). As a young girl, Jairus and his daughter was my favorite story to read from my family s Children s Bible Story book. I remember reading this story over and over and over again. I immediately replied that I would love to relay this story to the children. Jairus daughter was near death when he heard that Jesus was coming to his town. Jairus left his daughter s side for a chance to ask Jesus to heal his daughter. But the crowd was so large that before Jesus was able to make his way to Jairus house, word came to them that his daughter had died and there was no need to bother Jesus any longer. But Jesus continued on his way and told Jairus to have faith. When they arrived at the house Jesus told them that the girl was only sleeping. Then, Jesus raised her from the dead! I dearly loved this story possibly because death of a child struck my family when my six-year-old sister, Melanie, was killed in a tragic accident on May 20, I was only three years old and I don t remember Melanie, which saddens me. All I have are the stories of her short life on earth told to me through the years and an experience I had when my daughter, Megan, was a baby. Megan had curly hair much like Melanie s. One day as I held her close and rocked her, those curls so close to my face, triggered a memory. It was very vivid and much like a flashback scene in a movie. Even though it was gone in a flash, it prompted me to call my mom and ask her if Melanie ever rocked me when I was a baby. Mom told me that Melanie loved to hold and rock me. She would sit in a child-sized rocker and mom would securely wrap a scarf around both of us preventing me from slipping out of Melanie s arms and there we rocked. A bond between sisters formed in a rocking chair unfortunately came to a tragic end way too soon. All these memories came flooding back when Scott s text message came. As I thought about how I was going to tell the story of Jairus to the children that Sunday morning I pondered the thought, Why was this story so important to me growing up? Perhaps I questioned why Jesus healed Jairus daughter but didn t heal Melanie. Perhaps I felt closeness to Jairus, he not wanting to let go of his daughter, and I longing to have known Melanie. Perhaps it was the fairy tale ending that left a feeling of hope in my heart. I don t have a definitive answer to that question. What I do have is an understanding that bad things happen to good people even the goodness of Jesus did not prevent bad things from happening to him. I understand that God also knows the heartache of suffering the death of a loved one. I understand that through the life, death and resurrection of Jesus we are promised life eternal. I do have faith in God and I receive God wink moments to help keep my faith strong. God winked at me through Scott the day he asked me to bring the message of Jairus to the children. God winked at me through Megan the day I recalled my sisterly bond with Melanie. I love God wink moments. It is my hope and prayer that each one of us be keenly aware of the moments when God winks at us and also open to the opportunities when God chooses us to be the vessel to deliver a wink to others. Love, blessings, and God winks to you, Mitzi Richmond 7

9 Pathfinder update July has come and gone! In July a few us from the youth group were able to attend Rally on the Mountain at Winterplace Ski Resort. Rally was made by youth, for youth and ran by youth. Leah, Noah, Raven, Bree, Allison Mabry and I had not done this before so we really had no idea what to expect. It was a four day event. The theme of the 2018 Rally on the Mountain was Challenge. The youth was challenged to step out of their comfort zone and get to know other youth from all over WV. They were challenged to learn to pray, pray out loud, get to know the Lord more and learn who they are in Christ. Our four Perry Youth were separated the very first night. The look on their faces were priceless. As they were called into their groups Allison and I would tell them they will be fine. Not only did they have to go into their groups the adult leaders that brought the youth had go into a group to pray with each other. So then I realized that this was not only a challenge for the youth it was for us adults too. Friday and Saturday were full days of Worship, Encounter Groups, Service project at New Vision Depot and Fun Activities (Talent Show & Messy Olympics). In their encounter groups they were to learn about prayer and pray with each other. Everything they did was mostly in their Encounter Groups. The adult leaders were not to interrupt them and had to stay far away. So Allison and I sat and talked to other adult leaders. Trying to keep ourselves busy and not too adulty. We were told by the youth that the adult leaders were not to hover over them and let them be. So that was somewhat of a challenge for us adults, but I think we did pretty well. Our Perry youth had their times where they would come up to Allison and I worried about the other youth. We told them there was no need to worry because the Lord does not give us a spirit of worry. That He is with them and loves them. This experience was a great one for them! As I watched our youth interact with the other youth and then when they came back together I was amazed. All the youth at Rally worked together wonderfully and was there supporting each other. They grew close in such a short time. 9 God was all over this Rally. He gave the youth that were giving the sermons so much knowledge. It was awesome to listen to 15 to 18 year olds sharing God s love to the rest of us. They sounded like men and women that had been doing sermons for years. It brought back memories of my first experience with God and the young people I was around. They were on fire for the Lord and excited to spread the Good News to everyone they could!! It was a great experience and I am so proud of our youth. Yes, I worry sometimes about how many youth are at youth group on Wednesday nights and worry about our youth s Spiritual life. God has given me hope and faith. I love our youth and I want the very best for them. As their Youth Leader I want to give them every opportunity to experience God and for them to know that they are not to young too be a Disciple of God. One of my favorite Scripture passages: Don t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love in faith and in purity. 1 Timothy 4:12 Now August will be busy but fun also. We will possibly go to Grandview for Willy Wonka Jr. drama on August 1 st and go to the Mercy Me concert at the State Fair on August 11 th. Then we will start school and lessons again!! We will be getting ready for our next fundraiser, Kids Classic Parade on September 9 th. We will need help with pepperoni rolls, candy and possibly fruit and veggies. More info on that coming these next few weeks. We are excited and ready for a fun fall and winter. Thank you again for all your love and support! We have an awesome church family that we love! Love and Blessings, Perry Pathfinders & Kim Cummings
