MARRIAGES: Parishioners arrangements must be made at least six months prior to the ceremony and before arranging the social plans. DEVOTION: Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament takes place on First Friday, immediately following the 9:00 am Mass until 10:30am.
2 July 18/19, 2015 ST. ANDREW R.C. CHURCH PAGE 2 THE THEME Even in their weakness, God looked lovingly on Israel. When leaders failed, God promised them leaders who would carefully shepherd them. Jesus was such a shepherd. We hear today that he cared for his disciples when they were weary and welcomed the crowds who followed him with love. God s promises are truly fulfilled in Jesus, who continues to care for and shepherd us. The Lord is, indeed, our shepherd. THE READINGS JEREMIAH 23:1-6: A new shepherd will be sent to lead Israel. 3 JULY 18/19, 2015 ST. ANDREW R.C. CHURCH PAGE 3 From Fr. Peter s Desk 16th Sunday in Ordinary Time Dear Parish Family: Last Sunday we heard Mark s account of the Twelve sent out to share in the Mission of Jesus. Today s readings explain how God, like a good shepherd, redeems His people and provides for them. In the first reading, Prophet Jeremiah thunders against Israel s careless leadersthe king, some priests and some court prophetsbecause they have shown no concern for the poor. The prophet also foretells the rise of a good, new shepherd in the family line of David. Today s Good Shepherd Psalm affirms David s faith and trust in God, the Good Shepherd. The Second reading introduces Jesus as the shepherd of both the Jews and the Gentiles and explains how Jesus, the Good Shepherd, reconciled all of us with His Father by offering himself on the cross. The Gospel presents Jesus as the Good Shepherd, fulfilling God s promise given through His Prophet Jeremiah. Here we see Jesus attending to his weary apostles, who have just returned from their first preaching mission, while at the same time expressing his concern for the people who, like sheep without a shepherd, have gathered to meet him in the wilderness. The readings challenge us to use our God-given authority in the family, in the church and society, with fidelity and responsibility. Today, pastoral ministry includes not only the pastoral care given by those named or ordained as pastors, but the loving service given by all Christians who follow different callings to serve and lead others. When He saw the people gathered, however, He put His needs aside to meet the needs of others. Sometimes, as good stewards, we are called to do the same. Living Stewardship We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish who find true joy in placing the needs of others before their own desires-an act of good stewardship.
