2 AUGUST 18/19, 2018 ST. ANDREW R.C. CHURCH PAGE 2 THE THEME These readings invite us to surrender whatever holds us back from living as signs and witnesses to the love of Jesus Christ. In word and in sacrament, Jesus comes to us and invites us to the banquet of faith. But if we accept the invitation, we must pay attention to how we live, not as foolish persons but as wise people who make the most of this opportunity to be the bread of life in the world. We have been given the means, the ticket, if you will, to live forever. Do we accept the invitation? THE READINGS PROVERBS 9:1-6: Share in this banquet and advance in understanding. EPHESIANS 5:15-20: Time is a gift; live as instruments of the Lord.. JOHN 6:51-58: Eat this bread and believe that you will live forever. -SCHEDULE OF EVENTS - SATURDAY, AUGUST 25th, :00 PM Mass Priest Fr. Manuel Lector S. Miller E.M. s E. Gerecke, J. Holden, J. 3 AUGUST 18/19, 2018 ST. ANDREW R.C. CHURCH PAGE 3 From Fr. Peter s Desk 20th Sunday in Ordinary Time Dear Parish Family: Our First Reading on this Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time is from the Book of Wisdom. Wisdom built her house. She prepared a meal. She sent her maidens to invite guests from the hills overlooking the city. Her invitation goes out to the simple and those who have yet to encounter Wisdom s truth. She invites them with one word, Come, the same word that Jesus will use to invite his disciples to follow him and share in his Wisdom. In our Second Reading, St. Paul, in his letter to the Ephesians, tells us that a life lived according to Wisdom is a life lived in the Spirit. It is a life of prayer. It is a life lived in thanks and praise to God for all God does for us in Jesus Christ. Our Gospel from the Bread of Life discourses, begins with a repetition of the verse on which last Sunday s Gospel ended, reminding us that Jesus is the living Bread from heaven. The bread that he gives us is truly his flesh for the life and sake of the world. Jesus solemnly teaches that his flesh is true food and his blood true drink. Eternal life and participation is the Resurrection awaits those who feast on his food. My dear brothers and sisters in Christ, today s readings paint the picture of banquets, from the sumptuous table set by Wisdom to the Eucharistic meal that Jesus introduces. Just as Wisdom s feast offers more than simple food and drink, Jesus Body ad Blood offer more: eternal life and Christ himself. As we gather together to join in this feast, let us be filled with the Spirit giving thanks to God for the gift of his Son, our Lord Jesus. God Bless You All, Fr. Peter STEWARDSHIP Stewardship Reflection In today s second reading, St. Paul reminds us that, blessed by the Lord, the good steward should give thanks to God the Father always and for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Living Stewardship We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish who thank God by sharing the Good News through sacramental preparation ministries such as Pre-Cana, Baptismal Preparation, First Penance, Confirmation Catechesis and R.C.I.A.
