(319) School starts on Tuesday August 25th. It is going to be fun to have all of the students back. They bring a new life to our buildings. On Friday the 28th we will be changing the time of the Friday Mass back to 8:25 AM. These masses are planned by the students. They serve as readers and help with the music. Everyone is invited to attend the school Masses. It is an inspiration to see the faith of our students. Come and be part of the joy they bring to the liturgy. Mission Statement To Glorify God through Word, Worship and Service. Fall Fest is on September 13th. The dinner tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children 6-12, children 5 and under are free. You will not find better food anywhere in the world on that day. Your meal ticket, which you buy at the door, will enter you in a raffle drawing. You must be present to win. On September 13th we will only be having one mass. It will be a bilingual Mass at 10 AM. So here is what you do: you attend mass and then go to the KC hall and get in line for lunch. After you eat you go outside for the auction and way over pay for everything you buy. Fall Fest is a fundraiser for St. James School. Fall Fest envelopes can be pick up in the back of the church. Help us save postage by picking them up. The Men s Dinner is September 2nd at 6 PM. Call in your reservation at

2 ST. JAMES SCHOOL SJS BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT SJS Back to School is Tuesday night August 24th from 6-7:30 PM at Tobin Hall. Everyone in SJS parish and school are invited. HELP SUPPORT CATHOLIC EDUCATION WHILE YOU SHOP! Scrip order forms and a schedule are available in the office hallway of Tobin Hall, or you can find out more by going to our website and choosing SCRIP from the St. James School menu. A drop box is near the parish office for your convenience. Orders are placed weekly (some exceptions apply, see schedule online or in the hallway for details). HY-VEE RECEIPTS We are at $118, We need $150,000 to receive $1,000 check from Hy-Vee. With your help we can start the new school year off with $1,000. CATHOLIC DAUGHTERS OF THE AMERICAS Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court McDermott #504 will celebrate their 95th anniversary September 9th. We will be honoring our 50 year members. More details to come! CDA COURT MCDERMOTT #504 In the beginning, there were two meetings a month. One meeting, they formed a sewing circle; the other was a business meeting. Court McDermott later rented the hall from the K.C. s and when membership dropped to 17, they met in their homes. We have a current membership of 46 women. Through the years, donations and help were given to parish and civic projects, besides the missionary works of the state and national courts. Several foreign and local seminarians have been given support, and donations were sent to a child in the Philippines. Many layettes and other clothing have been sent to the Pope s warehouse, communion outfits made and sent to missions. Currently, baptismal bibs are embroidered and gifted to the newest St. James members. A local project has always been preparing baskets of homemade cookies, candies, and fruits at Thanksgiving/Christmas time and delivering to the needy and lonely. For many years the court furnished food and assisted with picnics and other events for the Veterans Hospital in Iowa City. And always the Spiritual exercises, retreats, days of recollection, Communion Sunday with breakfast. FAITH FORMATION SUNDAY FAITH FORMATION Our Catholic bishops say that our members need a non-threatening place where they can freely express their faith, and where the teachings of the Church can be clearly articulated and related to their experience. With our Faith Formation offerings for children and adults, St. James Parish is continuing to do just that! THE LABYRINTH OF WASHINGTON Washington is very fortunate to have a Labyrinth on the west side of town at the home of Jeanne Kos (615 W Adams Street). At the back of her property, next to the Old Catholic cemetery, resides a beautiful tree lined labyrinth. Over the years many people have walked this labyrinth to the small benched nook in the center an prayed or meditated circling back to the beginning. Jeanne invites all to take this ancient spiritual walk. No reservation required. You may escort yourself to the Labyrinth and take whatever time you need to pray. For more information visit our website at: or call STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION It is reported in the Old Testament Books of Exodus and Numbers that Joshua succeeded Moses as the leader of the Israelites. In fact, Joshua is explained as Moses assistant, while Moses himself led the Israelites. Our First Reading today from the Book of Joshua recounts how, under Joshua, the Israelites renewed their Covenant with God. For those who practice stewardship as a way of life, both renewal and covenant are significant. We speak of conversion in relation to the commitments we make to live as God-centered and loving people. Yet, there are times when it is important to personally renew our promises to God and to make a new covenant with the Lord. 4 Upcoming Events and Programs INTRODUCTION TO CENTERING PRAYER WORKSHOP The Introduction to Centering Prayer Workshop is a presentation of the discipline of Centering Prayer as silent communion with God beyond concepts, words and images. The workshop includes instruction on the method of Centering Prayer in a one-day, six-hour workshop, plus the opportunity for follow up sessions. No previous experience is required.
