2 Next weekend is 2nd Sunday Caring & Sharing. Please remember to bring non-perishable food items for the HACAP food pantry. We are grateful for all donations of food, however, when bringing canned goods, make sure all dates are current. Thank You! Each year the success of the campaign depends on you. Once more this year, you have done a wonderful thing; your pledges and gifts have helped to assure that the ADA will be able to continue building the faith community throughout the Diocese of Davenport. For those of you, who were not here last weekend or for other reasons have not yet made your pledge to this year s Diocesan Annual Appeal, please consider a pledge by picking up a flier/pledge envelope in your pew or the foyer of the church. You may return the completed form to the parish office or mail it directly to the Diocese of Davenport. Please join us Saturday, October 13th at 10:30am to reicte the Holy Rosary and other prayers to celebrate Our Lady s 5th apperance and miracle of the sun in 1917 at Fatima, Portugal. To rent KC Hall, go to the website washingtonkchall.com The ADA funding offers training and support to St. James Catholic School, the faith formation program, Immigration programs and seminarian education, as well as many other ministries. One of these ministries is MFP (Ministry Formation). We currently have parish members in the MFP in Spanish. If everyone gives at the same level as last year with a small increase we will be able to meet our goal without trouble. It would be great if 20 families who have never given to the ADA would this year. You can return your pledge to the parish or send it to the Diocese. I want to thank everyone in advance for your gift to the ADA. Vision 20/20: We will be reading The Joy of the Gospel by Pope Francis to prepare for the listening session for the Bishop s Vision 20/20 program. This important sharing will be to help set the goals of the Diocese for the next 10 years. You can pick up a copy of The Joy of the Gospel in the back of the church this week. We will have two evenings for discussing the book, October 17 th and October 23 rd. The diocese will then have one night in the parish to reflect about the book here in the parish. We do not have that date yet. We will be having a Baptismal prep class on October 13 th. English 10 AM and Spanish 11:15 AM. If you plan to have you child baptized in the next several months please plan to this class. Faith Formation has begun it is not too late to register. We meet Sunday from 10:00am-11:15am. The Third Session of Sacramental Preparation I Learn About Rules of Love will be held Wednesday, October 10th from 5:30pm-7:30pm. Meet in Tobin Hall. As a disciple, an extremely important question must always take precedence in decision making. What does God want me to do? In discerning answers to life's questions and difficulties, it doesn't matter what humans permit or even what popular choice dictates. It is what God says that matters. God's will is often dismissed, even by those who claim to believe in Him. We discern God's will by developing a strong and mature prayer life, listening to Scripture and church teaching, consulting church tradition, paying attention to the rhythms of life, and seeking His presence in all we experience and observe. As Jesus realized in his final hours, it is "not my will but yours be done." Are we ready to follow his example and give ourselves over to what God wants? 2

5 Today s readings give us a wonderful refresher on the Biblical origins of the Sacrament of Marriage, going all the way back to the second chapter of Genesis in our First Reading, and then reinforced by Jesus in our Gospel Reading from St. Mark. Perhaps more than any other time in Christianity, marriage and family life are under attack right now. It is vital that we have a proper understanding of the Church s beautiful and solid teachings in these areas. We call this type of knowledge, Formation and it is one of the pillars of a stewardship way of life. Solid formation in the faith not only strengthens us in our own walk with the Lord, but it allows us to pass on this knowledge to others who are thirsting to know the truth about the human person, and it also arms us to defend our beliefs, when necessary. These readings also invite us to reflect on the reality that we are to be good stewards of the vocation the Lord has entrusted to us. If I am married, do I recognize that my spouse and my marriage are a gift from God that must be nourished, developed and tended? This brings to mind the stewardship aspect of Time. After time spent with God, my next priority of time should be for my spouse. Do I realize that at the end of my life I will have to give an account to God for how I cared for the gift of my spouse and marriage? For more information visit
