4 Graduation I am staring at an elaborate Pontifical degree hanging on my wall over my cluttered desk: It s my Sacred Theology License issued from the Lateran University in Rome for which I ve been waiting for about six years, and it s satisfying to have it framed, and adorning the wall because it represents a lot of work. However, this diploma comes with a good dose of perspective as compared to the others I ve earned: I learned long ago that having one doesn t make you all-knowing about the field of study: Nor does it necessarily make you good at applying it to real life. In my parent s home I have a Bachelor of Science Diploma hanging on the wall next to an expired Third Mate s License in the U.S. Merchant Marine: I spent four hard years learning how to navigate an oceangoing ship, and I have the paper to prove it: Nevertheless, at this point, I don t think that I could navigate my way out of the bathtub! It is, of course, necessary that the hard work continue after the courses are done, and all the papers and exams are finished, and after the graduation ceremony is all wrapped up. Yes, it is a form of arrival to graduate from school and get a diploma; but we all know that it is more of a departure point too: Much life and growth awaits as one prepares to apply his/her learning to a job or career. But, it won t be long before there is stagnation if there isn t an effort in the service of constant selfimprovement and apprehension of the finer details of the science or art in which one is involved. So far, this is all obvious to the reasonable person. But it also has its application to the life of Faith: In one respect, we are tempted to divorce our faith from what we do for a living: Unconsciously we act as if work, job and career have nothing to do with living our faith. Quite the opposite, we are summoned by faith to integrate what we do, (inasmuch as it is something good and noble), into our lives of faith. The Vatican Council teaches us that One of the gravest errors of our time is the dichotomy between the faith which many profess and the practice of their daily lives... Let Christians follow the example of Christ who worked as a craftsman; let them be proud of the opportunity to carry out their earthly activity in such a way as to integrate human, domestic, professional, scientific and technical enterprises with religious values, under whose supreme direction all things are ordered to the glory of God. (Pastoral Constitution, Church in the Modern World, #43) In another respect, ongoing growth and study is not only important for a career in some science or art: It is essential for the life of faith to continue growing toward the Truth... the truth about God and the truth about being Human: After all, The Lord is the goal of human history, the focal point of the desires of history and civilization, the center of humankind, the joy of all hearts, and the fulfillment of all aspirations. (Pastoral Constitution, Church in the Modern World, #45)

For more information please contact Gilbert Hernandez, Chairman at beto719@comcast.net. Where are My People? (A parishioner shares her thoughts about the Chapel of Mary) I believe many of us today are living with stress, loss, and pain from events in our lives. Many of us have lost family members, especially children, and my family is one of them. We need to find peace in our souls. A way to find that peace is reaching out to Jesus on any given day in the Chapel of Mary, Mother of All Nations from 8:00AM to 9:00 PM. On Mondays, the Blessed Sacrament is exposed for adoration. Each week, the invitation is in our daily Sunday bulletin, and still the adoration chapel is empty. What a shame. The parishioners of St. John Neumann Church are blessed to have this holy chapel open to all of us. You don t have to sign up for a certain hour to come. Drop by and watch the peace you are going to find. I look for peace after losing my daughter, Lori, and I pray for family members who are struggling with their marriages, children who have become substance abusers, or anyone who has lost their way. We will never know why God gives us pain or disappointment, but we should know in our hearts that He has nothing but Love and Mercy for us all. He is the One Who gets us through our bad times. He is the One, Who gives us strength to go on. People come to adoration to pray, read the booklets, say the rosary, or sit in silence for God to enter their souls. In fact, the tranquility is so relaxing that many doze off. That s okay, because they are spending time with Jesus. Stop in for a visit with Jesus to make a Holy Hour or stay ten minutes. Come and receive the graces that the Holy Spirit has waiting for you. Help us pray together for Pope Francis to unite God s people around the world to return to prayer, Confession, Communion and Mass. Help us pray for our wars and violence to stop. Lets not wait for another disaster to turn us back to God. Alberta Sequeira
