4 Disordered One of the most vexing challenges for Church teachers in the modern world is conveying our beliefs on human sexuality with respect to homosexuality and other issues commonly encompassed by the letters LGBT. As Christians we must love everyone as we love ourselves, (even our enemies). But, we are also summoned to follow the truth. Authoritative teachers like St. Paul, (letter to the Romans) and St. Thomas Aquinas teach us to look for the truth inscribed in creation. In the context of a society informed by gay liberation and the righteous push for non-discrimination and equality, those who try to explain Church teaching are heard as though they were speaking out of both sides of their mouths. It is as if we are saying We welcome you and we love you as you are! But we don t welcome you and cannot love you as you are! From the Pastor s Desk.. We all have disordered sexuality! The people identifying as homosexual have a unique history of discrimination and persecution; of this there is no doubt. However, homosexual acts are not the only ones receiving the moniker disordered: Lust and Masturbation are referred to in much the same the way... Lust as morally disordered, and Masturbation as intrinsically and gravely disordered. And other issues such as fornication, pornography, prostitution and rape are, as you would expect, assigned adjectives like contrary to the dignity of the person, offenses against chastity, a social scourge and an intrinsically evil act. Those of us speaking for the Church don t believe that we are actually contradicting ourselves nor do we intend such contradiction. The cultural context bends our words in much the way light bends when passing through water. We speak from our faith-based world-view to people immersed in a different worldview formed by the culture. One of the major stumbling blocks is the descriptions of homosexual acts as intrinsically disordered. The prevailing culture hears the Church as saying that homosexuals are, themselves, disordered people. But the phrase, taken directly from the Catechism of the Church (#2357) speaks of acts, not of persons. And the word, intrinsically, is also important here: It means by its very nature or essence. In other words, according to our observation of the nature of genital sexuality, the male form is ordered to sexual union with the female form, and this union is ordered toward both the union of the spouses and procreation of children. The word disordered does not refer to the person, him or herself. And it does not equate with the idea of something like a psychological or emotional disorder. The order, which is the root-word of disorder is that of nature. St. Paul suggests this discernment of order in creation in the Letter to the Romans, (1:19-20): Disorder, more generally speaking, is applied to our inheritance of Original Sin which has distorted our desires and our appetites In themselves passions are neither good nor evil. They are morally qualified only to the extent that they effectively engage reason and will. Passions are said to be voluntary, "either because they are commanded by the will or because the will does not place obstacles in their way. It belongs to the perfection of the moral or human good that the passions be governed by reason Strong feelings are not decisive for the morality or the holiness of persons; they are simply the inexhaustible reservoir of images and affections in which the moral life is expressed. Passions are morally good when they contribute to a good action, evil in the opposite case. The upright will orders the movements of the senses it appropriates to the good and to beatitude; an evil will succumbs to disordered passions and exacerbates them. Emotions and feelings can be taken up into the virtues or perverted by the vices. Part of everyone s cross to bear is contained within his or her experience of sexuality. This may be a heavier burden for the homosexual person in today s cultural context. But they are no more disordered than the rest of us, and no less loved by our Lord and God.
