2 A d v entures in Minis t ry! One of the family s favorite movies is the musical, If you have not seen it, do yourself a favor and rent it, perhaps next Fourth of July. That is the traditional time we watch this movie as it is the story of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Although the movie is filled with song and action, one of the more powerful scenes in the movie is set in silence. After all of the struggle the questions and doubts the vote on independence is finally called and Congress determines that the new United States will move ahead into an unknown future. In the hush following the vote, the camera moves in on an almost stunned John Adams leaning back in his chair. The significance of what just happened takes a moment to sink in. Quietly, almost to himself, he declares, It s done!... It s done. Now there are some fairly large differences between forming a new nation and calling a new minister to a congregation, but I felt somewhat like that when Council voted unanimously to call Doug Foster as Prince of Peace s Youth and Family Ministries Director. After two years of praying, meeting, arguing, questioning, and more praying, it was done. I could not help thinking back to what it must have been like when Prince of Peace members chose to move ahead with the (then) fledgling Bread of Life Ministries. There must have been some similar fears: Are we really ready to do this? What if things don t work out? There must have been some similar joys: Yes! Now we can get going! Have there been times since when those people involved in those initial steps looked at the growth and work of Bread of Life and said, Wow! I remember when we were just getting started. Look at it now! Of course, just like in the movie, having made our decision and cast our vote there are a thousand things which must be done. Don Sproul is heading up a transition team which will work with Doug and our Congregation to get going (even such things as where his office will be!). We will need to get information about Doug out to the congregation (coming soon!). We will plan an Installation for Doug, and a reception for him and his family. Doug will need to start getting to know the Congregation and our larger community. Our members who are able and who have been wanting Prince of Peace to get going again will need to increase our financial support. Our prayers for God s guidance and leadership are no less critical now then they were through all of the planning, dreaming, and debating. In my vision I see our Summer Church Camp up and operating next summer. Maybe not the whole summer, not yet, but for several weeks at least: The lawns and classrooms of our congregation filled with children, running, reading, laughing. I see the families of those children being blessed by God s action through us. I see more of our members being encouraged into ministries of all kinds, putting their gifts into action. Yes, we are at the beginning of an exciting time. Yet, I want to sit back for one more moment and let the significance sink in. We Prince of Peace Lutheran Church have done what we set out to do. God has answered countless prayers and brought Doug into our midst. It is done. Pastor Jon
3 Bread of Life Ministries 157 Water Street - Augusta, ME (207) Karen McGuire, Office Manager Subject: Car/Truck, etc. - DONATION PROCESS A new and fun fundraiser. This is a great and simple way to help Bread of Life Ministries! If anyone wants to donate a car (or any motorized vehicle, truck, boat, ATV, motorcycle, camper, etc.) to Bread of Life Ministries (working or not working) here is the process we have set up. Background - Bread of Life Ministries has arranged with a national car donation program that assists non-profits throughout the country to receive and process donated cars, trucks, etc. The organization receives the phone call from the donor, picks up the car (tows it away), handles all the paperwork including title and tax donation receipt, and then sells/ auctions the vehicle. Bread of Life then receives a check in the mail to help support our services in serving the poorest of the poor and the donor gets a receipt in regards to their tax-deductible donation. It's a fantastic program. In 2007 we had 2 cars donated providing Bread of Life Ministries with over $2,000 to support our many services. We have another car in the works right now. Thanks to the many creative folks thinking of our services and helping those who are homeless move toward being self-sufficient. Here is the simple process: 1) Call ; 2) Tell them you want to donate a car to Bread of Life Ministries in Augusta, Maine; 3) The donor will provide name, address of vehicle and must have the title of the vehicle in their name. 4) The vehicle will be picked up at an arranged time with the owner - any where in the country! 5) A taxdeduction receipt will be provided to the owner; 6) A check will be processed to Bread of Life Ministries Thanks for spreading the word on this, and helping us provide the many needed and valuable services to the poorest of the poor. 6 SONSHINE NURSERY SCHOOL A Christian based Nursery School NURSERY SCHOOL REGISTRATIONS We accept registrations for preschoolers who are 33 months old, up to and including kindergarten age for our nursery school. They must be toilet trained at the beginning of school in September. Our younger students attend Tuesday & Thursday mornings, 8:30 to 11:30 and our 4/5 year olds attend Monday, Wednesday, & Friday mornings, 8:30 to 11:30. Interested families can call to receive a handbook and preregistration form. Sonshine Nursery School invites students of any background and religious affiliation to attend. SCHOLARSHIPS - SNS periodically grants scholarships to families with children in the school. We will never turn away a child simply because they cannot afford our tuition. Thrivent s GivingPlus Program Over the years, Sonshine Nursery School has been blessed with many generous donors who demonstrate their support of our ministry. Their financial donations have been supplemented through a wonderful one-of-a-kind member-directed gifting program from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. It s called the GivingPlus Program. The resulting supplemental contributions have helped families send their children to Sonshine by using the scholarships we can offer. This school year, the scholarship program has benefited four families who would not have been able to send their children without scholarship help. Thank You. For more information or to receive a GivingPlus Member Gift Form, please call the church office and speak to Bunnie, Program Coordinator ( ). Food Bank Needs The Food Bank uses about 500 plastic bags per week. We double bag everything - When we run out of donated bags, we have to buy from Hannaford - so keep bringing them, please. The Food Bank is in dire need of boxes of dry powdered milk and canned milk. Donated food may be left at St. Mark s Monday-Thursdays between 9AM and 2PM. Financial donations can be mailed to: Augusta Food Bank 9 Summer St., Augusta, WE CELEBRATE WITH... is a column for those with connections in our congregation who have been honored, achieved some-thing special, or had some recent success. If you have such news, please write the news and leave it in the office, or send it by or snail mail. SHELTER NEEDS Please remember when you are getting ready for yard sales (and throughout the year), that Bread of Life Shelter now has storage space for quality used furniture and other household items.
