2 A d v entures in Minis t ry! Summer is upon us! After a long winter (make that a l o o o o o n g winter), what a joy to experience the renewed green of spring and anticipate the warmer weather and relaxed schedules of summer! (Yet I know that in time I will anticipate autumn, and then winter again, just as much. God did a nice job creating Seasons!) As we approach Memorial Day weekend we once more enter into our Summer Schedule. This means less change this year than it has other years, since we don t need to merge two worship services into one. It does mean, however, the conclusion of our Christian Education time, as well as the welcome return of many summer-time friends (who have been away for the winter), and the addition of visitors and travelers to our beautiful State. This summer we will also be making a special effort to provide for fellowship time (Coffee Hour). Each Sunday after worship we plan to have coffee and juice and some snacks available in the Narthex (no long walk down to the Community Room), and we hope members and friends will take the time to catch up with one another, or spend a few moments with visitors and guests. Over this past year I have had (again) a number of people speak with me about our regular Sunday morning schedule. For many people, getting up and going in time for the 9:00 AM worship service is a difficulty. For others particularly the many who favored our old 8:00 AM worship service 9:00 AM, especially followed by 10:30 Christian Education means that a good part of their Sunday is already over by the time they leave Prince of Peace. It is true that having Christian Education immediately following Worship means it is difficult (if not impossible) to have fellowship or coffee hour on Sunday morning. If we schedule such a time after worship, we take away from class time; if we schedule fellowship after Christian Education, many do not stay. One solution that is often suggested is to have Christian Education first, then worship. This would clearly please some, and does have several advantages, not least of which is the opportunity for our congregation to re-connect with one another in conversation. Yet the question then becomes, What time? Do we have Christian Education start at 8:00 AM with worship at 9:30? If it is difficult for adults to get up and going in time for 9:00 AM worship, it can be even more difficult for parents to get themselves and their children up and going for 8:00 AM! Do we have Christian Education start at 9:00 AM with worship starting at 10:30? This would mean (most weeks) not getting out of worship until close to Noon. For some this would be fine, but for those who fondly remember 8:00 AM worship, this is rather late in the day. Difficult questions, with pro s and con s on all sides. For this summer, however, we have a wonderful opportunity! Stay a few minutes (or longer!) after worship and meet some sisters and brothers in Christ you don t know. Or spend time catching up with dear friends who you don t see during the week. Perhaps you would be willing to provide some simple snacks and drinks to support this outreach? (Sign Up sheets available soon!) 2 Pastor Jon

5 The last day of nursery school will be on Friday, May 27th. There is lots of room for new students for our Fall 2011 Program. Please help us spread the word about our Christ-centered Preschool Program that is a wonderful outreach of the Prince of Peace Ministries. A big Thank You from your Sonshine Nursery School for continuing to support our mission to provide a Christian Pre-School to the Augusta area. Your financial support helps keep our doors open and the word of God flowing to children from Christian homes and children hearing about God for the first time. Thank you to Cindy Gyorgy for singing to the children. We all love Mrs. G. Thank you to Patti for her friendship, keeping our books, answering telephone inquiries and for loving our kids. A favorite job for the day is to go and get the mail in the church office. Miss Patti always has a cheerful hello and a kind word to ever child. Thank you to all those who have donated craft materials and Cambells labels/upc S. We were able to order watercolors, paint brushes, a Healthy Foods Game, markers and magnifying glasses with our points that we have accumulated in the past two school years. Please continue to lift us up in prayer as the economy and free public preschools have had an affect on our enrollment. We look forward to another year and again Thank You for the support. 6 HELP! I'm a Caregiver Are you a caregiver? Do you find yourself getting spiritually exhausted? Internationally renowned author, respected professor and beloved pastor Henri Nouwen has written many books on the spiritual life that have inspired and comforted people throughout the world. Nouwen's writing encourages people to integrate all aspects of life into a lived spirituality. One of his books deals with the joys and sorrows we all face as we try to care for those folks who are unable to continue to care for themselves. The small book contains practical and inspiring reflections which invite us to explore new views of caregiving...one full of promise and blessing. I invite you to me at cwdurkee@yahoo.com if you might like to meet concerning the use of this book as a small group study. I invite your thoughts as to format, time and frequency of gatherings. The book is called "The Spirituality of Caregiving" by Henri J.M. Nouwen and cost is $12. Carol Durkee Highlights of May 9, 2011 Council Meeting The following individuals were approved for membership: Irene Hill, Kelly Coston, Peter and Julie Drever, and Carlene and Gene Kaler. Council gave their support to Pastor Jon s proposal for a shared ministry position with MaineGeneral Medical Center. Council crafted a letter to the congregation, explaining the proposal and how Pastor s hours at Prince of Peace will be affected. The proposal will be open for discussion at the Annual Meeting on May 20. Council reviewed the open positions on Council for next year. Some individuals in the congregation and on Council have expressed an interest in some of them. The Nominating Committee (chaired by Don Sproul) is still seeking individuals to lead the Education, Fellowship, and Youth Committees. Council approved the Choir Director Agreement document that the Worship Committee presented on behalf of Rebecca Vogel. 6

8 HELP FEED THE HUNGRY The Augusta Food Bank needs your help. The first Sunday of every month has long been designated as Feed the Hungry Sunday at Prince of Peace. June 5th is the first Sunday of the month. Our local food bank is always in need of canned goods, (vegetables, soups, sauces, tuna etc.) pasta meals, mac & cheese, cereals, snack items like granola bars and crackers, toiletries etc. Please bring your items in at any time and place them in the shopping cart in our Narthex entryway. Bud Walters is our representative at the Food Bank. He regularly collects the food and delivers it to the Food Bank. Thank you for all you do to serve the needs of others less fortunate in our area. 8
