2 P a g e 2 T h e S a l e m H e a r t b e a t IN WORSHIP - December 2014 December is such an exciting month in the life of the Christian Church. During the four Sundays leading up to Christmas we celebrate Advent, looking forward to the birth of the Messiah and the coming of our Savior and King at Christmas. And of course at the end of the month we joyfully go into a new year! During this dark, cold and sometimes dreary month, what joy and light we find in our Advent and Christmas celebrations! I have exercised my pastoral privilege and changed my mind on the sermon series I am doing for this season, which I had announced in last month's newsletter. We are indeed taking a break from our study of the Gospel of Matthew. We will spend the Sundays of Advent exploring the meaning of the Christmas story through the lens of some of our favorite Christmas carols. 3 P a g e 3 T h e S a l e m H e a r t b e a t PRAYER CALENDAR FOR December 2014 Each week we pray for members of our church family, a sister church here in the Waynesboro area and her pastor, one of the countries where Christians are suffering severe persecution, and one of the ministries we support with our mission funds. Please join us in the ministry of prayer! December 7th - Anita and Richard Johnson - Liberty Baptist Church, Pastor Henry Dean - the persecuted Christians of Syria - Waynesboro Community and Human Services December 14th - Pete and Jean Johnson - Lifegate Ministries, Pastor Delton Lehman - the persecuted Christians of Sudan - WCRH Christian Radio December 21st - Troy, Cindy, Courtney and Storm Johnson - Living Word Ministries, Pastor Warren Rice - the persecuted Christians of Nigeria - Young Life December 28th - Carolyn Jones, Adam Patterson, and Lydia Jones - Otterbein Church, Pastor Mike Newman and staff - the persecuted Christians of Pakistan - Camp Joy El D e c e m b e r B i r t h d a y s : 12/2 Rick Beeler 12/3 Robert Stouffer 12/4 Melanie (Hess) Moore 12/7 Donald Main 12/11 Madilyn Kennedy 12/11 Aaron Souders 12/12 Eddie Carbaugh 12/13 Nick Zimmerman 12/19 Pastor Lin 12/20 Kim Kennedy 12/25 Jesus 12/26 Pastor Gary Bowman 12/29 Vicki Zimmerman 12/31 Owen Georg Schuitt A n n i v e r s a r i e s : Mike & Tammy Eisenberger (Celebrate!) Just bring your favorite game, your own cold drinks (we make coffee), and a snack to share. All ages welcomed!
4 P a g e 4 T h e S a l e m H e a r t b e a t Brrrrrrrr. I do not like these cold temperatures. Everything is too early. The stores have Christmas displays, Black Friday is all you hear on television, the weather is colder than it should be and it isn t even Thanksgiving! Another group went to Sight and Sound on November 7th to see Moses (all of it this time). They were amazed at all the special effects. Then they went to Good and Plenty to eat. All that good food and I didn t get any. Thanks to Carole Carbaugh for ordering some new Salem shirts. The polo shirts are royal blue and gray this time. The tee shirts and sweatshirts stayed gray. It makes a nice looking impression when we go somewhere as a church group. Too bad they don t come in mouse sizes. We now have 3 organists who are taking turns playing. And Neville comes to play with them some Sundays. He really enjoys that, he misses playing with Pat. Fred White has started taking poinsettia orders. I can t wait to see the sanctuary decorated for the holidays. Hanging of the Greens is November 29th (note after Thanksgiving). It will be so much fun starting with a covered dish meal, then coming over to sing carols and decorate the church. It is one of my favorite traditions. A lot of people are going to have a happier holiday thanks to Salem Church.. the food is piling up for Waynesboro Human Services. There will be lots of good holiday meals. The shoe boxes were all loaded into Andy s car to go to the collection site to be packed up. I am anxious to hear the final count. Sherry Hill did 60 boxes!!! Wow. In a couple weeks a group of people are going to Baltimore to help at the processing center getting everything ready to ship around the world. It is nice that we now have a processing center close to home. Jean Kahl is collecting gifts for the patients at South Mountain. They will have a Merry Christmas. Linda Wilson is getting a family from Human Services for us to adopt for the holidays. And Paula Eigenbrode is checking with Leland about giving gifts and celebrating with their guests. We are planning to go there instead of Micheaux Manor since we now have an assisted living facility in Waynesboro. I heard Jean Kahl and Lu Kennedy went to hear Ronnie Dove. Lu got a kiss! They said it was a really good concert. Don t eat too much Turkey till next time, Your Friend Timmy t h e s a l e m c h u r c h m o u s e
5 P a g e 5 T h e S a l e m H e a r t b e a t OLD FASHIONED WORSHIP AT EYLER'S VALLEY CHAPEL If you would like to try a unique worship experience for Christmastime, attend one of the worship services at Eyler's Valley Chapel (near Thurmont, MD). The Chapel does not have electricity, and so all services are conducted totally by candlelight. Pastor Lin will be leading worship and preaching at Eyler's Valley Chapel on Christmas Eve for their final service at 11:00 p.m. Christmas week services are at 7:00 and 8:30 p.m. on December 21, 22, and 23, and Christmas Eve services are at 5:00, 6:30, 8:00, 9:30 and 11:00 p.m. These services are usually very well attended, so do get there early! For more information and directions, go to SECRET SISTER REVEAL and CHRISTMAS PARTY Tuesday, Dec. 9 6:30 pm Fellowship Center Any woman attending Salem Church is welcome to attend the party. Those that want to participate in Secret Sisters for the coming year can be in the draw, but you can come and not be part of Secret Sisters. Please bring a snack to share. Beverages will be provided. If you have any questions or comments, see or call Fern McCloud NEW YEAR'S EVE PARTY CHRISTMAS AT HEARTHSTONE We usually enjoy a great time of worship and fellowship at Hearthstone Retirement Home on the Sundays of January and June. But this year, they asked if we could possibly come in December instead of January. So we will be sharing with the residents of Hearthstone each Sunday in December from 6:30 to 7:30 in the evening. Pastor Lin will send a sign up list around in church; if you are interested in joining us or have questions, please talk to her. Everyone is invited to Salem's New Year's Eve party on Wednesday, December 31st, starting at 8:00 p.m. Join us anytime during the evening. Please bring a snack to share and your own non-alcoholic drinks (we'll make coffee, of course!) We'll relax, fellowship, play some games, and then at midnight, weather permitting, we will launch fire lanterns to welcome in the New Year! Bring your friends and family. All ages welcomed!

8 P a g e 8 T h e S a l e m H e a r t b e a t CONGREGATIONAL MEETING Our end-of-year congregational meeting will be held on Sunday, December 7th, at 9:30 a.m. in the church sanctuary. There will be no adult or children's Sunday School that day. During that meeting we will approve the 2015 church budget and elect new Ministry Council members and officers. Nominees for the Ministry Council to serve from are Pame Emrick, Lu Kennedy, and Aurita Rose. Nominees for officers for 2015 are President Butch Rotz and Vice President Bob Crouse. We will also approve updates and changes to the church constitution and bylaws. All active members are requested to be at the meeting - your voice and vote count! ONE CARD OR MANY? YOUR CHOICE! Instead of sending Christmas cards to individuals and families here at Salem, you are welcome to send one card to the entire church family. There will be a Christmas card display area for these cards. We invite you to use the money and time saved to help those with special needs this Christmas season. Perhaps you can put a few extra dollars in the Salvation Army kettle, or buy an extra gift for our Hyman Services adopted family. Or you could use the hours saved from writing out all those cards to spend some time with a loved one or a shut in. Of course, if you love doing all those Christmas cards, feel free to do so! We promise there won't be hurt feelings either way you choose to share your Christmas greetings! CHRISTMAS CARDS FOR RECOVERING MILITARY MEMBERS While you are doing your Christmas cards this year, how about remembering those who have served our country in the military? One way to do so is to send a card to a recovering military member at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Here is the address: A Recovering American Soldier c/o Walter Reed Army Medical Center 6900 Georgia Ave NW Washington DC
