2 Fifth Sunday of Easter Jer 31:31-34; Ps 51:3-4, 12-15; Heb 5:7-9; Jn 12:20-33 April 29, 2018 Easter --- Symbols (meaning and mystery) inspiring us to seek, teaching us to believe Circle The circle, because it has no beginning or end, is symbolic of eternity. It is used most often as a reference to God. Circles (Entwined) Alpha & Omega Trefoil This figure, formed of three interwoven circles, is a symbol for the Trinity. The circles represent the eternal nature of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Entwined, they remind us that God is one, even though he reveals himself in three Persons. Alpha and Omega are the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet, and thus refer to the eternal nature of Christ. Rev. 1:8 "I am the Alpha and the Omega," says the Lord God, "who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty." The trefoil is a stylized shamrock, which St. Patrick used to illustrate the doctrine of the Trinity. It is a single design composed of three joined circles, which represent eternity, signifying one God in three Persons. Triangle Early symbolic representations of the Trinity are rare, but the triangle is probably the first. Like other trinitarian symbols, it represents one God in three Persons. Matt. 28:18-20 All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in(n) the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." Triquetra The Triquetra is an early Trinitarian design found especially in the British Isles. Its three equal arcs represent equality, its continuous line expresses eternity, and the interweaving represents indivisibility. Fleur-de-lis The fleur-de-lis is a stylized representation of the lily, a symbol of purity, and so is a common reference to the Virgin Mary. The fleur-de-lis is also a symbol of royalty, made so by its adoption by kings of France. The triune representation of the fleur-de-lis has also led to its adoption as a symbol of the Trinity. Star (6-Pointed) The six-pointed star is the Creator's star. Its six points stand for the six days of creation. The points are also said to represent the six attributes of God - power, wisdom, majesty, love, mercy and justice. This star is also known today as the Star of David. The six-pointed star is of ancient origin and is used in many religions with a variety of meanings. o seek, teaching us to believe

Richard Pagano, a newly-ordained priest of the Diocese of St. Augustine (Jacksonville, Florida), came to reside here in our parish (July of 2016). He was pursuing, and has subsequently earned, a Master s Degree in Communications at the Saint John Paul the Great University. Anticipating his stay here in our Diocese would be brief, we have been blessed in his priestly ministry, not just to our parish but to the wider Church here in San Diego for two years. His last Masses for our parish will be celebrated on May 5 th and 6 th. (Sat. 5pm, Sunday 11am, and Sunday, 5pm). Following the 11am Mass, all parishioners are invited to come and express thanks for his ministry and a joyful goodbye in Murray Hall. The Knights will be providing a hamburger lunch! (1 Peter 4:10) Will you consider participating in the Annual Catholic Appeal the call and invitation to living in the grace and stewardship which lies at the heart of what it means to belong to the Church entering into Her Mission!!! This year, the Diocese has given us a goal identical to last year $84,000 (which is determined by a percentage of the total income of the parish) which was an increase of almost 8% from previous years. There is a budget for this appeal by the Diocese of over $3.5 million.
