2 The Solemnity of the Body & Blood of the Lord... Reflecting on the meaning of one aspect of Our Mass,... celebrating the Communion Rite This weekend, the whole Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. In 1246, Pope Urban IV extended the feast of Corpus Christi to the universal Church, a feast which was local in Italy and Germany. This was also a time when very few received Holy Communion, primarily because of a self-focusing introspection of deeming oneself unworthy! This self-condemnation was so pervasive that the Pope was hoping the experience of the Eucharist, and the very Presence of Christ IN the communicant, that this would help the Faithful to become more effectively the Sacrament of Christ to the world! Pope Pius IX, in 1849, instituted the celebration of the feast of the Most Precious Blood for similar reasons, to emphasize the saving power of the blood of Christ which we have already received and so, being faithful to the Lord s Command, we ought to receive. Prior to 1970, the feasts of Corpus Christi and the Most Precious Blood were observed separately. The Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ is an opportunity for the Faithful to once again commit to further develop embrace the meaning of, and purpose for, our Eucharist to be formed as His Sacrament by the full, conscious, and active participation called for in the celebration of the Eucharist. And while the need for improved responses at Mass, singing and enthusiasm, a greater sharing in the worship together, is a goal for ALL Masses, perhaps for this Solemnity, maybe we can just look at the Rite of Communion which begins after the Great Amen! This Rite should be celebrated with joy and reverence in a dignified manner that makes it obvious that we know receiving the Body and Blood of Christ the very heart of our Christian lives!!! It has been more than 30 years since the faithful in the United States have been receiving Communion from the chalice, responding to Jesus' Command to "take this, all of you, and drink from it: this is the cup of my blood, the blood of the new and everlasting covenant..." And so, in memory of Him, we do as we are commanded: coming together on the Lord's Day, the Body of Christ gathering for the Eucharistic banquet, wherein we receive the cup of salvation. In memory of Him, and for Him, we drink from the chalice, receiving the Blood of Christ, the new covenant through which God redeems, saves, and makes us His own. In memory of Him, we receive the chalice into our hands and, in so doing, we commit ourselves to living in imitation of Him. In both memory and imitation of Him, we receive the cup the Image Christ used in referencing the heart of His Messianic Mission, the Sacrifice He made on the cross, asking, "can you, too, drink from it?" (Matthew 20:22). So, perhaps in a special way of re-embracing the meaning and importance of WHO we receive (in Word, and Sacrament), in receiving from the chalice, may we see ourselves as committing to living lives of self-sacrifice for others.

4 A Visiting Monk Comes to St. Therese... At the request of Abbot Charles (Right Rev. Charles Wright, OSB) the Abbot for the Prince of Peace Abbey, in Oceanside ( and Bishop McElroy; our parish has been asked to receive one of his brother monks from this Benedictine abbey. Brother Damien Evangelista, at the request of his Abbot, was recently ordained a deacon on his journey to be ordained a priest! He will be with us for ten weeks in diaconal ministry. Here is his introduction to us all... Gree ngs! My name is Brother Damien Evangelista and I am a Benedic ne monk at Prince of Peace Abbey in Oceanside. I began my spiritual journey in 2001 with the Augus nians here in San Diego. A er four years with them, I discerned that I would be be er suited for monas c life, so I transferred to the Benedic nes in I will now be star ng my final year of seminary studies for the priesthood in the Fall semester at St. Meinrad Archabbey, Indiana. I was recently ordained as a deacon this past April, so to con nue my prepara on for becoming a priest next year I am required to serve in a parish for the summer. Since I ve been in religious life for over seventeen years, you may ask if becoming a priest takes this long. No, it doesn t. Instead, being a monk is a voca on in itself. In other words, a monk doesn t have to become a priest, since living a life of regular prayer, work, and study is a way of life that Benedic ne monks have lived since the sixth century. (The Benedic nes are the oldest religious community in the Church!!!) Our way of life has helped many monks and nuns become saints without having to become a priest. As a ma er of fact, our founder, St. Benedict, was not a priest. That said, some mes the superior of a monas c community will asks some of the brother monks to become a priest so that they could celebrate mass for the community. Fr. Peter Bosque has been gracious enough to agree to be my mentor for this special me in my life; so I am grateful and look forward to working with him and ge ng to know as many of you for the me that I am here.
