Augustine reasons, in other words, that if his listeners want to understand the Eucharist as sacrament, they must begin by understanding themselves as the Body of Christ. Later in the sermon, he sums up his theology with the often quoted exhortation: Be what you can see, and receive what you are. In Sermon 229, Augustine similarly focuses on the Church as the Body of Christ, but this time includes a more specific emphasis on unity. Quoting the Apostle Paul, Augustine says, One loaf, one body, is what we, being many, are (1 Cor. 10:17). He expands on the meaning of the verse thus: However many loaves may be placed there, it is one loaf; however many loaves there may be on Christ s altars throughout the world, it is one loaf. But what does it mean, one loaf? He [Paul] explained very briefly: one body is what we, being many, are. This is the body of Christ, about which the apostle says, while addressing the church, But you are the body of Christ and his members (1 Cor 12:27). What you receive is what you yourselves are, thanks to the grace by which you have been redeemed; you add your signature to this, when you answer Amen. What you see here is the sacrament of unity. In this instance, Augustine highlights the unity of the Church. In the patristic period (Augustine s time), the primary emphasis was not on the Eucharistic Presence per se, but on the purpose of that presence the Presence of Christ IN the community, for the community. In the medieval period, the worshiping Assembly s focus gradually moved away from perceiving Christ s Presence in Her midst to perceiving Christ s Presence solely in the consecrated bread and wine. The Lord THERE! This is when tabernacles became so important/vital. A further unfortunate development was that the Eucharist came to be adored, rather than received; observed, but rarely eaten. As the sacramental theologian Enrico Mazza aptly observes, the Sacrament of unity of the Church became the Sacrament of union of the believer with Christ.. More to follow..

3 CATECHETICAL SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 17, 2017 Why do we celebrate Catechetical Sunday? (The theme in 2017 is Living as Missionary Disciples of the Lord!) In 1935, the Vatican published On the Better Care and Promotion of Catechetical Education, a document that asks every country to acknowledge the importance of the Church's teaching ministry and to honor those who serve the Christian community as catechists. Beginning in 1971, the national conference of bishops for the United States (the usccb), through its office, the Department of Education, began producing materials to help parishes celebrate the event at the local level. This committee is now called the Committee of Evangelization and Catechesis. In the United States, the third Sunday in September is always our Catechetical Sunday. Ministry of the Word is THE fundamental element of evangelization inviting others to BE disciples of Christ! To be a disciple means to grow ever closer to HIS Holy Image in how we live our lives! Thus, being a disciple involves moving in stages; so too, evangelizing involves the proclamation of Jesus Christ, the eternal Word of God, in a stages too! The Word of God nourishes both evangelizers and those who are being evangelized so that each one may continue to grow in his or her Christian life. (National Directory for Catechesis; Washington, DC: United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, 2005; no. 17). Those whom the community has designated to serve as catechists will be called forth to be commissioned for their ministry. Catechetical Sunday is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the role that each person plays, by virtue of Baptism, in handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel. Catechetical Sunday is an opportunity for all to rededicate themselves to this mission as a community of faith. What Does the Word Catechetical Mean? Many Catholics have used the word catechism for years, and they know it has something to do with the Church s teachings. The root word, catechesis, is from a Greek word meaning to echo, or resound. Catechesis is the act of echoing the teaching of Christ to the world. A catechist is one who teaches in His Name, and on behalf of His Church. Catechesis is a distinct and special ministry in the Church! As the Catechism of the Catholic Church makes clear, Catechesis is intimately bound up with the whole of the Church's life... her inner growth and correspondence with God's plan depend essentially on catechesis (no. 7). This ministry of teaching in the name of the Church has a profound dignity, which is why catechists are formally commissioned by the Church. It is only fitting that we set aside a day to highlight this ministry and invite the entire church community to think about our responsibility to share our faith with others. Catechesis AND Parents are involved in Catechetical Sunday! Our Church teaches that PARENTS are truly the most important, and primary, catechists (echoes of Christ s Word, Presence) for their children. They prepare the soil and plant the first seeds of faith. On Catechetical Sunday, we not only highlight the work of catechists in parishes and schools, but we also commend parents and guardians and encourage them to take seriously their role of making their Catholic households a place where faith is passed on to the next generation. This is why the rite of blessing of catechists used on Catechetical Sunday includes a special blessing of parents and guardians.

5 St. Therese Academy 6046 Camino Rico, San Diego, CA St. Therese Academy returned to school on Monday, August 28th. Our students are settling into new routines and making new friends. We celebrated the end of our first week with a Back to School Picnic on Friday. We look forward to making our school year a YEAR TO REMEMBER!
