2 Christ Among Us Christ For Us (Reflection on the Eucharist OUR Mass) Edited from America Magazine (Jesuit weekly) by Sr. Judith M. Kubicki, C.S.S.F., who is an assistant professor of theology at Fordham University in New York City. continued from. One of these was the Church s teaching that while there is only ONE Presence of Christ in the Church, His Presence is manifested in manifold ways. The encyclical mentions the Presence of Christ in the Church first. Other sacraments of Christ s Presence are listed for example, His Presence in the presider; His Presence most especially in the Bread & Wine (Body & Blood), the Eucharistic species; His Presence in the sacraments and in the Word proclaimed from the Scriptures. But it is Christ s Presence in His CHURCH, specified as the Church gathered for worship, that is the basis for the possibility of all the other modes of His Presence. Belief in the Presence of the Risen Lord in the Church is the basis for our belief in the presence of Christ in the gathered Assembly. Such 20th-century theologians as Karl Rahner, Edward Schillebeeckx, and Piet Schoonenberg have all contributed to an understanding of the Church as sacrament and therefore as the primary location of Christ s Presence in the world. For Rahner, Schillebeeckx, and Schoonenberg, the ALL stress the importance of seeing the Presence of Christ in the Sacred Species in relation to His Presence BOTH too in the proclamation of the Word (the proclamation of the readings at Mass) and in the community listening to the Word, and who RECEIVE His Presence in the Sacrament of His Body & Blood. There is, of course, only ONE REAL Presence of Christ, though expressed, experienced, by many modes, in many ways. What we often forget, however, is that the Real Presence in the Eucharistic Species is not an end in itself. As Schillebeeckx reminds us, Christ s gift of Himself is not ultimately directed to the bread and wine, but towards the COMMUNITY, to form His Body, for His Work in the world! This is not new theology. Augustine expresses these very ideas in two of his oft-quoted sermons. He poses the following question in Sermon 272: How can bread be his body? And the cup, or what the cup contains, how can it be his blood? Augustine explains: The reason these things, brothers and sisters, are called sacraments is that in them one thing is seen, another is understood. What can be seen has a bodily appearance, what is to be understood provides spiritual fruit. So if you want to understand the body of Christ, listen to the apostle telling the faithful, You, though, are the body of Christ and its members (1 Cor. 12:27). So if it is you that are the body of Christ and its members, it is the mystery meaning you that has been placed on the Lord s table; what you receive is the mystery that means you. It is to what you are that you reply Amen, and by so replying you express your assent. What you hear, you see, is The body of Christ, and you answer, Amen. So be a member of the body of Christ, in order to make that Amen true.. More to follow..

4 Parish Pastoral Council Pastoral Council Membership Summary of Meeting Wednesday, July 5th (terms commence in September, 2017) Members (councilors) reached consensus on a new parish Mission Statement which will now be distr ibuted acr oss ALL ministries, as well as our representations of our parish (e.g., bulletin, website, etc.). This branding is intended not to be just a title, but a guiding and inspire theme of our mission together to be more faithful disciples of the Lord. Bob Ulrich (Chair ) [3yr s.] Philip E. Barney (Vice-Chair) [3yrs.] Jane Hernandez [1yr.] Doug Livingston [1yr.] Debbie McNamara [2yr s.] Sylvia Nadalet [3yr s.] Marie Naughton [2yr s.] Karen O'Malley [3yr s.] John Wynne [1yr s.] Love God, Serve Others, Bear Fruit Each of these elements are offered as priority, as well as consequential flowing from the prior imperative. So, in loving God, this will lead to, and foster the capacity for, serving (as an expression of, loving) others; and this, in turn, will bear fruit (have a consequence in the lives of others, from calling others to, the nurturing of, their relationship with Christ, as too meeting social, emotional, needs). With the priority of our worship being given continued attention, there was discussion about our need for enhancing a joyful Mass experience. There was a discussion about the press of people on Easter Sunday, and the general sense that the Easter experience was less than positive due to the inability to serve that many people. The councilors were invited to consider what might be our collective response to provide for the numbers that will come on Easter of 2018 a radical change for next year being to have one Mass on Easter Sunday morning. As the Church requires that there always is the most holiest of celebrations, the Easter Vigil... So, we would only have two (2) Easter Masses: the Vigil, and condensing the three morning Masses of Easter Sunday into ONE liturgy (~10am). With a church nave that seats 850, but many parishioners thinking the church Masses are full (visually and socially) when the church gets 500+ full, Blocking off the parking spaces between the school and church (on the northside of the church), and setting up (renting) about 1,200 chairs for the area, with or without a tent as a sun or rain cover. This would enable ALL those who come to worship with us a hospitality and an improved worship experience as opposed to what is experienced in trying to celebrate Mass as we have. We reaffirmed the three critical experiences for the Faithful to have a meaningful and joyful experience in Mass, all of which have an evangelizing potential for parishes: Music Message Ministers Hymns Homilies Hospitality These elements will be given continued attention. There was continued discussion about the number of Masses here at our parish. With only one priest assigned, but three other priests serving in Sunday presiding availability, the timing for this discussion is most apropos since the decisions for the number of Masses ought not be predicated on the priest presider, but instead, on what fosters the best worship for the whole parish! There was an update on the temporalities of the parish (Ministry Center, sewer & water lines, tower and church walkway work, the lighting of property with LEDs). Next Parish Pastoral Council Meeting September 6th.

5 The Walking with Purpose parish program at St. Therese Parish is excited to announce our Fall study sessions! We have a new course this fall, Discovering our Dignity, as well as our starting course, Opening Your Heart- The Starting Point. In addition, we will be offering our intermediate course, Keeping In Balance. This foundational, 22-week Bible study is designed for women who are new to WWP as well as those with other Bible study experience. We welcome past participants and invite new women to join us! St. Therese Parish will offer both a morning program and an evening program. The morning program will offer Opening Your Heart to help you dig deeper into forming your faith. Keeping in Balance is a study to help you use and apply the Old Testament and New Testament as you face the daily challenges of life. Discovering our Dignity is our advanced study, diving into learning about the women of the Bible and seeing how they can guide us in the challenges we face daily. Walking with Purpose is a Catholic Bible study that aims to bring women to a deeper, personal relationship with Christ through personal study and small group discussions. Our work together links our everyday challenges with solutions given to us through the teachings of Christ and the Catholic Church. We will meet Thursday mornings, from 9am to 11am as well as Thursday evenings from 7pm to 9pm. The study begins September 28 th, Childcare will be available for the morning session.
