The Book of the Gospels - U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops... National Conference of Catholic Bishops United States of America DECREE In accord with the norms established by decree of the Sacred Congregation of Rites in Cum, nostra ætate (January 27, 1966), this edition of the Book of the Gospels is declared to be the vernacular typical edition of this liturgical book in the Latin rite dioceses of the United States of America, and is published by authority of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops. The Book of the Gospels was canonically approved for use by the National Conference of Catholic Bishops on November 16, 1999 and was subsequently confirmed by the Apostolic See by decree of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments on May 23, 2000 (Prot. 2742/99/L). On the feast of Saint Jerome, September 30, 2000, the Book of the Gospels may be published and used in the liturgy. On the First Sunday of Advent, December 3, 2000, its use is mandatory. From that day forward no other English version may be used. Given at the General Secretariat of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops, Washington D.C., on June 29, 2000, the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul. Most Reverend Joseph A. Fiorenza, Bishop of Galveston-Houston; President National Conference of Catholic Bishops-succeeded by U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops Liturgical books, containing selections from Sacred Scripture, have been common in the Church from the time of Saint Gregory the Great (circa 575 a.d.). In our own day, every effort is made to assure the Scriptures are bound in books which are worthy, dignified, and beautiful. This is particularly true of the Book of the Gospels which is venerated above all the books of readings by Churches of both East and West. So clearly is the Book of the Gospels a sign of Christ present in the liturgy, that it is revered with the same holy kiss given to the altar. For this reason it is desirable that parishes possess a Book of the Gospels separate from the other book of readings the Lectionary. Thus, the Book of the Gospels as a sign of the presence of Christ in His Word proclaimed is always accorded a place of honor in the Church s liturgy. It is borne by the deacon or priest in procession, accompanied by candles (and sometimes incense) at Mass. The imposition and presentation of the Book of the Gospels to a newly ordained bishop illustrates that the faithful preaching of the Word of God is among his principle duties. The presentation of the Book of the Gospels to the newly ordained deacon symbolizes the office of the deacon to proclaim the Gospel in liturgical celebrations and to preach the faith of the Church in word and deed. This is also why the Book of the Gospels is now adorning the ledge, a place of honor, on the ambo when it is not being used in the Liturgy.... continued...

FRIENDS OF THE MISSION FISH FRY To all the wonderful parishioners that supported the Friends of the Missions Fish Fry last Friday Thank You! Your generosity in allowed the Friends of the Missions to send dona ons to the science program at the St. Bonaventure Indian Mission School on the Navajo Reserva on in Thoreau, New Mexico. In addi on, we will con nue to sponsor the 6 individuals at the founda on for children in need in their studies and medical needs. The next Fish Fry is November 17th in the St. Therese Social Center at 5:30 p.m. 50+ CLUB Our next luncheon will be on Wednesday, November 15, at 11:15 a.m. in the Social Center. The cost of the catered lunch, which includes wine, lemonade, coffee and dessert, is $9 for members and $10 for guests. New members are welcome. Please mail your reserva on before November 11. Walking With Purpose is a women's Catholic Bible Study offered in our parish on Thursdays at 9am. We are seeking to build our Child Care Ministry to make our program more accessible to mothers at home with young children. We are praying for a few women to serve once a week in our nursery. The Child Care Ministry helps with setup and cleanup, Bible story me, snacks, and indoor play. This beau ful opportunity will allow the mothers of our parish the me to receive the love and care they so very much need given to them through the wri en Word of Christ and the fellowship of other women in our parish. Your YES to this role will be the answer to a mother's prayer! All that is needed is an outpouring of love for children and the desire to build up God s Kingdom by serving the ones that heaven belongs to! Perfect for older moms who miss holding their babies, homeschooled teens and college-aged young adults looking for service hours, or the seasoned mother who can recall those "in the trenches" years and would love to reach out and help!
