First Sunday of Lent February 25, 2007

Page Two First Sunday of Lent February 25, 2007 we tend to make two grave errors about the Devil. One is to disbelieve in his existence; the other is to feel an excessive and unhealthy interest in him. Let's not underestimate the Devil's place in Scripture or the consistent teaching of the Church. The Fourth Lateran Council strikes the The fine flower balance clearly in declaring: everything evil has its temporal limits and arises from the free choice of creatures. Both the limitations of the Devil and free choice are sharply focused in the Gospel for the First Sunday of Lent. The temptations of Jesus are tests like those Adam and other servants of God failed to pass. The of unholiness can grow only in the close neighborhood of the Holy. Nowhere do we tempt so successfully as on the very steps of the altar. Screwtape Going to Church can be a great comfort. It is a safe harbor in a stormy world. But, watch out! The safe harbor is really a battleground between God and the Devil. No one exposed the hidden hazard of churchgoing better than the late C.S. Lewis. In his fantasy, The Screwtape Letters, a Master-Devil advises his apprentice to encourage negativism within the ranks of the Church, to permit external habits of religion to attack their inner significance. The Devil quotes Scripture. He attends baptisms, and, as wry ex-choir director lamented, he occasionally sits with the choir! And why not? He even dared to tempt Jesus! C.S. Lewis also observed that, in our day,

temptation to turn stones into loaves of bread appeals to natural appetites. To choose an easy, comfortable life of compromise instead of God is to feed human weakness... to allow it to grow! The second temptation to give the Devil his due in homage in exchange for the illusion of control appeals directly to the ego. When we choose worldly compromise to glut our ambition and our lust for power, we play the Devil's own game with the Devil's constantly changing rules. It's a game we cannot win. bait." Whether we are in the marketplace, at home, or in Church, we cannot avoid a war of wills. With baited hook and attractive lure, the Devil is an expert fisherman. As always, Jesus shows us the way to remain free is to be totally committed to God. Luczak Fr. The third, and final, temptation to jump from the pinnacle of the Temple and be saved by angels appeals to vanity. Vanity places popularity and renown before God. It makes God a lackey. To choose passing fame over eternal reward is a winning ticket in a fool's lottery! In today's Gospel, Jesus puts the Devil in his place. The Devil takes the initiative, but his test ironically backfires. It works for God's glory. Jesus remains faithful through free choice. The temptations of Jesus are essentially those we have. While they are heavily disguised in everyday dress, with no spectacular setting to recall Jesus in the desert, our temptations are the Devil's sleight of hand. They are illusions that fooled Adam and Eve and a host of others, but not Christ. As we strengthen our commitment to God through Lenten prayer, fasting, penance and charity, we join Jesus in the desert. We cannot allow our weakness to be the Devil's strength. Be watchful, prayerful, and remember what St. Ambrose said long ago: "The Devil's snare does not catch you unless you are first caught by the Devil's

February 25, 2007 First Sunday of Lent Page Three Stewardship Sunday Collections Weekly (This Year)2/18/07 - $11, (Last year) 2/19/06 - $8, Today's first reading describes the offering of first fruits the people of Israel were to present to the Lord in thanksgiving for their deliverance from Egypt and the gift of the Promised Land. Is my offering at today's Mass an appropriate response to the many blessings the Lord has given me? SPIRITUAL LIFE FROM THE LITURGY BOARD OPERATION RICE BOWL We hope you find the Operation Rice Bowl materials helpful. We strongly encourage you to read the materials for each week, carry on the suggested actions, cook the recipes, and place your alms for the week in the cardboard rice bowl provided. You may bring your alms each week and place them in the boxes at the doors of the church, or you may bring your alms (or a check for the total amount of your alms made out to St. Isaac Jogues) and place it in the second collection we will have on Palm Sunday. Please remember that 75% of contributions to Operation Rice Bowl go to Catholic Relief Services and help fund programs and projects involving health and nutrition, education, clean water, development of small businesses, etc. The other 25% will be used to support hunger and poverty alleviation efforts here in the Archdiocese of Chicago. This week pray for Salvador Garcia...and other Mexicans working with community banks in their country to establish small businesses and support their families. Operation Rice Bowl is grounded in the principles of Catholic Social Teaching which calls us to: Respect the life and dignity of the human person by recognizing that we are made in the image and likeness of God. Through our actions we must express that each person is precious and that the lives and welfare of all people are priorities. Support family, community, and participation by recognizing that we are not only sacred, but social. How we participate in our family and community, from our daily actions to our policy decisions affects the dignity of each and every person. Respect the rights and responsibilities of all people. It is imperative that we take responsibility to protect the rights of all people. These rights include the right to life, food, shelter, education, and employment, along with political and cultural rights. Opt for the poor and vulnerable through all of our actions. As a community of faith, we have the obligation to reach out to those in most need. Through the Gospel we are specifically called to take actions on behalf of the most vulnerable members of society. Respect the dignity of work and the rights of workers through our economic decisions and actions. The ability to work to earn a living is the right of all people. When we work we become more aware of our human dignity. All workers have the right to a fair wage, to organize themselves, and to work in good conditions. Recognize solidarity with all people. We are one human family, regardless of our nations, racial, ethnic, gender, economic or ideological boundaries. Answering the call to love our neighbors will further promote a culture of respect and lead to peace in our communities around the world. Care for all of God's creation by being good stewards of what has been entrusted to us. Through protecting the sacred environment in which we live, we respect the goodness of nature, a gift God has given to us.

Please see the special brochure that will be in next week's bulletin which will have the full schedule. SACRISTANS The cleanliness and order of our Church, so that we have a warm and welcoming place to praise and worship God, does not happen by magic. It is maintained by the work and dedication of several people. However, our numbers are dwindling due to illness and we need your help. If you are willing and able to give one hour a month to help clean the church, vessels, etc., then the ministry of Sacristan might be for you. The sacristans work on teams one team per week and each team only serves once a month. They clean on Saturdays right after the Communion Service. To discuss your possible participation, please call Dee Stanton or leave a message for the Sacristan Coordinator, Helene Kowalik, at 847/ We

RCIA Next Saturday our two RCIA Candidates, Gina and Steve, will participate in a Penitential Rite during the 5:00 p.m. Mass. They will come before the community and we will pray for the Lord to help them acknowledge their sin and need for forgiveness as they prepare to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the first time later in Lent. Let us continue to support Gina and Steve, as well as their sponsors, by our prayer, example, encouragement and acknowledgment of our own sin and need for forgiveness. May part of our example be our own celebration of God's love and mercy in the Sacrament of Reconciliation during this season of renewal. PHILIPPIANS: The ancient city of Philippi was located in what is today northeastern Greece. Paul's community of converts at Philippi was especially dear to him. In this section of his letter to them, Paul is upset but not with them. He has heard that false teachers have come to the community, teaching that Jewish food laws and the rite of circumcision applied even to Christians. MASS INTENTIONS FOR 2008 The 2008 Mass Book is now open. Anyone wishing to reserve Masses for loved ones or special intentions may do so. Please note: we will take only one intention for each liturgy. We suggest a $10.00 stipend for each Mass. According to the Code of Canon Law 948: Separate Masses must be applied for the intentions of those for whom an individual offering, even if small, has been made and accepted. What is normative in the practice of the Church is that there be separate individual Masses offered for individual intentions. Therefore, the practice of combining individual intentions on a regular basis has ceased at St. Isaac Jogues Parish. ABOUT NEXT WEEK'S READINGS GENESIS: This passage recounts the making of a covenant between God and Abraham. Ancient Near-Eastern people often established a covenant by cutting animals in half and setting the halves opposite each other. The participants walked barefoot in the blood flowing between the halves, thereby establishing a blood relationship. But this covenant involves God, who will pass between them in a more dramatic way.

Page Five First Sunday of Lent February 25, 2007 HUMAN CONCERNS Come Walk with Us All parishioners, family members & friends are invited to the Holy Family Room this Friday, March 2 between 8:30 a.m. & 6:00 p.m. & Saturday, March 3 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. to walk a labyrinth. This painted canvas path is a replica of the design found on the floor of the Chartres Cathedral. This & other labyrinths of the time were used by Catholics who could not travel to the Holy Land. Walking the labyrinth symbolized their spiritual journey to Jerusalem. Modern pilgrims traverse such paths to pray, meditate, find release, discover answers, or reconnect with God. It offers the opportunity for one to slow down & move to a deeper place within. Guides will be on hand to start you on the path. Coverings will be available for those who need to walk in shoes. Only stocking feet or protected shoes will be allowed on the canvas. Discover a spiritual tool that can enhance your Lenten experience. Come spend some time in movement & prayer. PROJECT BODY AND SOUL: SIJ Wellness Screening Project Body & Soul returns to St. Isaac on Saturday, March 24, 2007 from 8:00 to 11:00 a.m. Health Maintenance Institute comes again to the Holy Family Room to provide laboratory tests for interested parishioners. Also available to those who sign up for the basic series are PSA ($37), thyroid profile ($37) & stool occult blood study ($6 take home kit). New this year is CRP (C - reactive protein; high levels in the body are linked to inflammation in the blood vessels) for $40. In addition, participants may have height, weight & blood pressure measurements & complete a wellness inventory. Pre-registration is required. Payment (cash or check) is due at the time of service. Participants

must fast 8 hours before the blood draw. Appointments will be scheduled every 5 minutes from 8:00 a.m. through 10:50 a.m. For staffing purposes, HMI has directed us to take 40 successive appointments before staffing another sequential list of registrants (scheduled in the same way.). 11 February 25, 2007 First Sunday of Lent Page Six Go Red for Women An American Heart Month Initiative Know the Signs! Knowing your numbers & lowering your risks for heart attack & stroke are two goals of the Go Red...initiative, but there's another about which we need to be aware. Most of us know to dial in the case of an emergency. A number of us have learned the how-to's of CPR & AEDs. How many, though, can recognize the symptoms of heart attack & stroke? For your information or review, here are the facts: A percentage of heart attacks are sudden & intense leaving little doubt as to what is happening. Most, though, start slowly, with mild pain or discomfort. Many victims aren't sure what's wrong & wait too long before getting help. (1) The following signs may be indicative of a heart attack: chest discomfort usually in the center of the chest & lasting longer than a few minutes but sometimes going away & coming back. It can feel like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain. (1) discomfort in other areas of the upper body may include pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach. (1) shortness of breath this may happen even in the absence of chest discomfort Other signs - some people may break out in a cold sweat, feel nauseous or lightheaded. If you or someone you're with has chest discomfort, especially with one of more of the other signs, don't wait longer than a few minutes (no more than 5) before calling for help. Call get to a hospital right away. (1) The signs & symptoms of stroke are no less a concern & require quick attention. Prompt diagnosis & (if appropriate) initiation of clotbusting therapy are crucial. Time lost is brain lost. (2) Stroke warning signs include: sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body (2) sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding (2) sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination (2) sudden severe headache with no known cause (2) If you or anyone around you experiences one of these, call right away. (2) To learn more, log on to strokeassociation.org or or call STROKE or MY-HEART. To learn CPR & use of an AED, contact your local fire department, community college, American Heart Association or American Red Cross. (1) Heart Attack Symptoms & Warning Signs, in Love Your Heart! 2007 American Heart Month, Daily Herald, Wednesday, February 7, 2007, pg. 27 (2) Stroke: Know the Risks, Know the Signs, pg. 10 Health Care Justice - SOUND THE ALARM! Part 2 In last week's bulletin, you read about the injustices in health care & the numbers of people affected. No matter any personal familiarity with those impacted, it remains for us, a people of faith, a concern. Wrongs need to be addressed & we can be the instruments of change. The Campaign for Better Health Care, a voice for Illinois consumers & organizers of SOUND THE ALARM! for Health Care Justice this year's campaign to raise awareness & monies, is asking faith communities like St. Isaac Jogues to join in their efforts to effect reform. They have asked us to partner with churches across the state in their simple but powerful advocacy event SOUND THE ALARM! They have

asked us to set aside the first Sabbath in March, March 4, to do several things call attention to the plight of those lacking adequate insurance, pray for those affected, & send postcards or letters to our state legislators. Next Sunday, March 4, during the Prayers of the Faithful, we will remember our less fortunate brothers & sisters. We also will draw your attention to the bulletin to look for sample letters addressed to Senate President Emil Jones & Speaker Michael Madigan. We would ask that you take the time to copy them from the bulletin & send them to the addresses provided. Our prayer & writing efforts, hopefully, will help transform our current system into a more just & compassionate one!

We have tried to keep close track of these names for our Bulletin as they are made available to us. However, now we face an important privacy issue, very much like the issues faced by hospitals, health institutions, and certainly by other parishes. We cannot (by law) publicly let our parish community know the health status of any of our members without their permission. We appreciate the fact that often friends, neighbors, and acquaintances wish to do something special for a person who is ill, and ask to place their name on the list to be prayed for. While their intentions are surely good, we simply can no longer accept names in this manner. We will institute a new process regarding calling in names for the Bulletin list. Names for the sick list placed in the Bulletin have to be called in by the person who is ill, or by a member of their family. At the time they call in the name, they will be asked whether they are the sick person him/ herself, or a member of their family, and if they give permission for the name to be placed on the list.

They will be asked for the correct spelling of the sick person's name. If a family member, they will be required to give their name for our records. Thank you for your patience regarding this new process. We wish to do all we can to offer our parish community the opportunity to offer prayers for those who are ill but we must also be cognizant of the fact that all members of our congregation are entitled to their privacy in this regard.
