The bulletin has further instructions & information. Children: Young people are always welcome and encouraged to participate as much as possible. There are worship jobs available for the children to do during the service. They can just pick any lanyard & it explains how they can serve today. There are also Children s Bulletins & Activity Bags in the lobby. We have a nursery available for children 5 and under, and it is staffed all morning. Please mark the Tear-Off with one or more of your favorite hymns or songs so that we know which ones to work into our Sunday morning worship services. We ll do our best to work them in as we can. It is time to start thinking about what s next and what God may have in store for us regarding our building and physical space. There is a team forming to explore these issues. Summer Worship Our theme for this summer is Wonder Women of Faith. We are celebrating the faith, love, and courage of women in the Bible. Each Sunday we are focusing on one woman or a group of women. Today we will be featuring Ruth and Naomi. Next week we feature Hannah.

3 5 SHED CLEANOUT DEADLINE Due to our need for space in our large storage shed for our ministries with refugees and with Family Promise families, we are clearing the shed of material not needed for the ministries of Christ Lutheran. Any unneeded material in the shed after July 4th with be taken to the dump or burned in our burn pile. Please make arrangements as soon as possible to recover any personal material. ~Human Needs and Outreach Committees NEW COMMUNION BREAD You may notice that we are now using different Communion bread. This bread is being homemade each week by Ryan & Erica Ballard as their gift to the church. We thank them for this gift! When Pastor Chad distributes the bread, it will take him a little getting used to so please be patient if you get a piece that is too big or too small. PARADE SEASON Our next parade will be at the Park City parade on July 4th and we will be meeting at about 8:40 AM near Chisholm Trail Elementary. Please join us to be a disciple giving bread and fish to feed the 5000 (parade watchers). If possible please wear your red Christ Lutheran tee shirts.

5 7 Human Needs Monthly charity designations; In June we collected items for both Saint Francis Migration Ministries and Family Promise. In July we will begin collecting furniture for refugees working with SFMM. July we will also collect for the Filling the Gap program of Partners for Wichita. Collected snacks are to be taken to the Kansas Food Bank on July 13. Filling the Gap Lunches for Kids will serve lunches to children and youth ages 18 and under. The lunches are available at no charge and will be served Monday through Friday, July 30-August 10, from noon until 1:00 p.m., at 19 locations in Wichita, Haysville, and Oaklawn. In August we will collect for Lutheran World Relief and in September we will collect for CROP Walk. Refugee Ministry update; Saint Francis Migration Ministries has requested our assistance with sponsoring refugees. The refugees would need assistance with furnishing their household, assistance in getting the apartment ready, welcome and friendship (dinner together, taking them to parks, etc.). SFMM ask that a volunteer commit to 4 to 8 hours a month. Faith groups usually spend about $3,000 for a family of four. This generally amounts to three months of rent, deposit on an apartment, utilities, and miscellaneous expenses. CLC council will discuss how to plan gathering these funds at the June council meeting. We are planning to assist in gathering furniture and supplies, finding sufficient volunteers (12) to host three refugee couples, families or individuals (four volunteers per family with two people visiting each week) and one $3,000 financial contribution. We plan to utilize a Stephen Ministry type program of monthly meetings to discuss any problems, get ideas of things to do, etc.). Forrest Ehmke will be the coordinator for Christ Lutheran. Forrest and Pastor Chad will share communication needs with Kendra at SFMM. Human Needs collection for June is gathering items for both Family Promise and St. Francis Migration Ministries. In addition, CLC will post information about the furniture needs for the refugees in July. Thank you to those assisting in making storage available. Volunteers making the one year commitment will have an application to complete, go through a background check, log and submit on a monthly basis all volunteer hours, mileage and donations. A refugee ministry meeting for further organization is planned for the second half of July. Human Needs, Part II The second program is Family Promise with whom Christ Lutheran has agreed to become a host congregation in the Rotation Program. Elaine Miller coordinates our involvement with Family Promise. We will begin serving people one week/quarter once a new group of twelve churches are obtained. The mission of Family Promise of Greater Wichita is to unite hearts and hands to provide compassionate hospitality and empower homeless families with children to achieve sustainable independence. They provide customized case management which allows them to walk beside families in life, partnering with them to achieve their goals. There are three phases to their Sustainable Independence Program (SIP): Phase 1: Support Services Families are assisted with urgent/crisis needs for homelessness prevention, as we have resources. Phase 2: Hospitality/Lodging Our Rotation Program, to work towards sustainability. Other programs revolve around this. Phase 3: Mentoring/Aftercare For families who have participated in/graduated from our Rotation Program. Because we are focusing on women in the Bible, each week we will also be including an excerpt from the ELCA s Draft Social Statement on Women & Justice. Social statements are teaching and policy documents that assist ELCA Lutherans in forming judgments and in guiding action on social issues. They are developed through an extensive process of prayer, study and deliberation involving the whole ELCA and must be adopted by a 2/3 vote of an ELCA Churchwide Assembly. Currently the ELCA has 12 social statements (addressing topics like genetics, the death penalty, and human sexuality), and will be voting on the next one at the 2019 Churchwide Assembly. The social statement currently up for discussion and adoption is The Social Statement on Women & Justice. So that our congregation can participate in the discernment process for this potential new social statement, each week during the summer we will be reading an excerpt from this draft statement. The full statement contains 36 basic theses and then a longer Fuller Explanation section for each of the theses. The 36 theses are organized around these 5 areas:

8 10 Core Convictions I. Analysis of Patriarchy and Sexism II. Resources for Resisting Patriarchy and Sexism III. Response to God s Work: Call to Action and New Commitments in Society IV. Response to God s Word: Call to Action and New Commitments Regarding the Church We will be reading a few theses each week, and today s theses are Core Convictions- Theses If you would like to read the full draft of the social statement or learn more about the process, you can visit We also have a few full copies available at the Opportunity Table for you to look at or take home. There are a few things to remember as we read through this statement: 1. This is a draft statement, and the greater church is looking for your input. If you have thoughts or reactions to what you hear us read in worship, you are invited to respond online at bit.ly/womenandjusticedraft or talk to Pastor Chad and he can help you send a letter. All responses are due by September 30, The ELCA is interested in your feedback! 2. What you hear in worship today is only an excerpt. We don t have time to read entire sections, so what we read may sound or feel a bit out of context today. 3. We are only reading the basic theses in worship. The full social statement contains a deeper explanation and theological justification for each one of the theses that we will be reading. If something peaks your interest, you are encouraged to read the entire statement, including the Fuller Explanation section.

11 For our congregational prayers of intercession during the summer we will be trying out a couple of different prayer forms. For the month of June, we will be using The 5 Finger Prayer model.

Each finger reminds us to pray for a different group of people. During worship, the Leader will introduce each prayer petition and pause for a few moments. During that silence, you are invited to speak aloud the names of the people you would like to pray for. This will be a popcorn style prayer, meaning that you can just pop in with your requests, and it is ok if you say your names while someone else is saying theirs.
