2 I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. (John 15: 5, NIV) My dearest Salem Family, I have etched each of you in a special and sacred place in my heart. Serving as your humble pastor is one of the proudest chapters of my life. WOW, I've been so very blessed! Whatever I've accomplished these past 6 years (two as Youth Pastor for Living Waters and four as Salem UMC Pastor) to culminate the way it did has been truly amazing. Emotions have covered the spectrum - sadness, anger, shock, disbelief, but yes also joy, gladness, and hope. All of these feelings have made me extremely emotional because I knew it was all out of love and it was out of four very intimate years of serving together and working tirelessly in God s vineyard, and being a brilliant light in WESTOSHA County showing this community and beyond the way to a personal transforming relationship with Jesus. I'm very happy with all that God has allowed us to accomplish, but I heard God calling me to trust his will and to take a faithful step. I'm just hungry like that, eager and expecting to be used and consumed by God for the glorification of his Kingdom. As I discern this stirring of the Holy Spirit, I sat at the wisdom feet of my Dad who expressed, God does not call you to a denomination but to a flock; the sheep will know the voice of their Shepherd and the sheep that will follow the Shepherd. I'm very excited about the future, I'm very nervous. It's scary, but I have a lot of confident in all of us. Each person is called to contribute to the growth of Salem United Methodist Church both in the interim and beyond. God has provided spiritual gifts to each believer with the goal in mind that members would become more like Christ, resulting in a firm faith. Spiritual maturity leads to spiritual stability - something the church desperately need heading into their new season. Unity and service -- these two areas are critical for Salem UMC heading into this between time, the time of saying goodbye to one pastor and saying hello to the next. I pray I have done my part to at least begin to alleviate any fear of the congregation and I humbly challenge each of you to continue in faithful service to our Lord and Savior Jesus. I believe in what each of you is capable of - continued faithfulness, continued growth, continued learning, and continued commitment. Walk into that fire. Look! Nebuchadnezzar shouted. I see four men, unbound, walking around in the fire unharmed! And the fourth looks like a god. Daniel 3:25 (NLT) When you go through deep waters, I will be with you. When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown. When you walk through the fire of oppression, you will not be burned up; the flames will not consume you. Isaiah 43:2 It s OK to be sad I think Paul s farewell to the leaders from the Church at Ephesus expressed these emotions extremely well, but the time has come for you as a church to escort Martin and me to the ship on which God has booked us passage. As Paul willingly set sail for Jerusalem, we are going to obediently follow God s course for us to 5 th Avenue United Methodist Church. While I don t have any prophetic words about whether or when we will ever see each other again like Paul did, I do know this each one of us need to keep our eyes fixed on Christ and what He has called each of us to do.

3 The Vine cont. I wanted a perfect ending. Now I ve learned, the hard way, that some endings are challenging, and some life stories don t have a clear beginning, middle, and end. Life is about not knowing, having to change, taking the moment and making the best of it, without knowing what s going to happen next. This may not be the perfect ending that any of us imagined, or desired but with God s help I know that we WILL make the best of it, with faith in Christ we don t need to know what s going to happen, we simply need to order our STEPS in His WORD and remember: Whatever God calls you to do He will empower you to accomplish. Over these past four years, we have lived our faith. In the future, we will need our faith even more. No one likes to say goodbye and I'm going to so very much miss looking at your loving faces and sharing your caring hugs. I'm going to miss the camaraderie that we earned and we built and the close-knit family we ve become. But all of your prayers, support, training, and guidance has prepared me to sore and answer God s continued call to minister to his people and with trust and faith: My heart and soul say yes My Spirit say yes For there is more that God requires of me I open up my heart and tell the Lord Yes I'm obeying Jesus; I won't stray from my call I've made up in my mind, I'll still say, yes My soul says yes, my mind says, my heart says yes, I made up in my mind; I will say, yes to Jesus I ll do what you want me to do Jesus I ll say what you want me to say I ll go, if you lead me Jesus, yes, I ll go I lift my hands and tell the Lord yes I open up my heart and say yes I say yes God All God desires is YES! I won't be afraid I'll step out on God s Word I'll declare God s glory Yes I will, yes I will My soul says yes I want to do your will Jesus And there is more that I require of you Pastor Clarissa, I m calling you higher There is more that I require of you my daughter Don t be afraid I m calling you out of your dry places Come you up a little higher, just a little higher I m call you Pastor Clarissa I have invest in you to do my will I m calling you; yes I m calling you Pastor Clarissa There is so much more that I require of you Seek my face, hear my voice, and harden not your heart So let your heart and soul say Yes, Hallelujah Hallelujah Adapted Shekinah Glory Say Yes

4 The Vine cont. God can do anything you know far more than we could ever imagine or guess or request in our wildest dreams! He does it not by pushing us around but by working within us his Holy Spirit deeply and gently within each of us. It will be Martin, Marissa, Biancha, John, Sophia, Nicolas, Cookie, and Hachi, and my ongoing and constant prayer that God will richly bless the ministry of Word and Sacrament and the ministries at Salem United Methodist Church, giving thanks to our gracious God for the humble honor, privilege, and time we have had with each and everyone of you my Sisters and Brothers. I have hugged many of you in the past few weeks and many times one or the other of us has said, This isn t goodbye. We mean, This isn t the end. We mean, I count on seeing you again. And, I won t forget you. Goodbyes are hard. So we say, This isn t goodbye. May our loving God bless each one of you with his grace for Jesus sake until we meet again. Amen. Amen. Amen. At Salem UMC, we make no apology for strong preaching, sound doctrine and devotion to the Trinity. FAI R WI N DS AN D FOLLOWI N G SEA, FOREVER YOU R HUM BLE SERVAN T -LEADER, PASTOR CLARISSA, MARTIN, MARISSA, BIANCHA, JOHN, SOPHIA, NICOLAS, COOKIE, & HACHI We truly and passionately love you and will miss you tremendously. Let us keep looking to Jesus. Our faith comes from Him and He is the One Who makes it perfect. He did not give up when He had to suffer shame and die on a cross. He knew of the joy that would be His later. Now He is sitting at the right side of God. Hebrews 12:2
