2 I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. (John 15: 5, NIV) TRULY, HE IS RISEN! As Christians celebrate Easter and Christ s resurrection, pastors who have discussed this story year after year try to find ways to keep it fresh and relevant for their congregations. It can be a challenge not just to retell the story while attempting to help people frame it, or maybe look at it in a different way. Sometimes, all the pericopes relating to Easter can be like a prism. You hold them up to the light and you turn it just a bit and you get a whole different view. Whole different kaleidoscopes of colors come through. So Easter is a good time to try and turn the prism a little bit and see if there s a different way of looking at things. When Jesus rose from the dead, grief departed and His suffering, so wrenching and complete, became a thing of the past. At the moment of Christ's resurrection, His focus, and ours, turned to the future. The miraculous lesson of Easter is that through Jesus' death on the Cross, we have been granted a second chance, permission to leave our old lives behind and stand before the pristine, unmarred canvas of a new day, with all its potential for joy and choices that honor God. Then go quickly and tell his disciples, He has been raised from the dead, * and indeed he is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see him. This is my message for you. Matthew 28:7 The most important celebration in the life of the church is this month. Easter! It points to the center of the Christian faith, and for all who follow Christ; it is our justification for being called Christians. Growing up I loved the Easter egg hunts, chocolate bunnies, and new clothes for that special Easter service. But my life was totally changed when I was introduced to the fullness of the message of Easter. The hope of Easter is that the salvation, shalom, peace, that is found in Christ begins today! Easter doesn t represent the end. It s about a new beginning. As we journey through Easter together, we can do so with great anticipation. We can come with a sense of wonder in how the love, grace, and forgiveness found in the way of Christ will be unpacked and revealed in our lives in the days to come. Have you accepted Jesus as your Lord and Savior? If not, Easter is the perfect time to ask Him into your heart and your life. Stop reliving the past, beating yourself up over all the mistakes you've made. The slate has been wiped clean! Cont. on next page

Volunteers Needed for the Smorgasbord, March 10 th Sign up sheets for volunteer workers and donations of food can be found in the fellowship area Our Annual Silent Auction will be held during the Smorgasbord on Sunday March 10 th. Marlene Curtiss and Linda Roberts are in charge of the Silent Auction and need donations for new or like new items to sell at the Auction. Donations can be brought to the church office during office hours (Mon., Wed., Thurs., Fri. from 9:00 a.m. 12:00 noon)the week prior to the Smorgasbord or on Saturday, March 9 from 12:00 noon 3:00 p.m. It would be helpful if you would include your name on a list of the items and their approximate value. Thank you very much for your support. Ignite 41 Youth Group The Ignite 41 Youth Group got off to a great start with the February 10 th Kick Off. The youth groups will be meeting 3 times a month in the Bristol UMC Fellowship Hall from 4:00-6:00 p.m. Schedule is: 2 nd Sunday: Middle and High Combined; 3 rd Sunday: High School; 4 th Sunday: Middle School. March Meetings are: 10 th no combined meeting Pastor Louis will be out of town; 17 th High School Youth; 24 th Middle School Youth Confirmation The Circuit 41 Confirmation class is meeting twice a month on Sunday afternoons, beginning with a meal served by the host church. The evening begins with the Shared Dinner & Committee Meetings at 6:30 p.m. and continues with the Church Council Meeting at 7:30 p.m. Impact Community 5,000 Hour Challenge As a congregation we are challenged to do 5,000 hours of community service by the end of the year. If everyone can do at least 1 or 2 hours of volunteer service a week it will quickly add up. An Impact Community slip can be found each week in your bulletin. Impact Community slips can also be found on the SCRIP table in the fellowship area. Fill it out and drop it in the collection plate on Sunday or return to the church office. As of 2/1713 we have given 472½ hours of service to the community. Can we make our 5,000 hours in 2013? The challenge is before you! Noisy Offering On the second Sunday of the month our kids take a Noisy Offering, collecting coins for that month s Pennies for Mission designation. This month s Noisy Offering will be on Sunday, March 10 th. Money collected will to go to the Shalom Center.. Wednesday is Music Night at Salem UMC Interested in joining one or more of our music groups? Rehearsals are held on Wednesday nights beginning with Praise Power at 6:00 p.m., Bell Choir at 7:00 p.m. and Choir at 8:00 p.m. Your Plastic Bags Are Making A Difference! You are invited to continue bringing in your plastic store bags and leaving them in the basket found in the narthex they will be used to make mats for the homeless in Chicago. Over 700 bags from Salem were used to make the mat on display in the narthex. 8 Pennies for Mission Pennies for Mission is our ongoing project where all of the coins in the collection plate each month are given to a special mission. Begun in 1989 we have measured our pennies in miles with $ in a mile. We are currently traveling toward our 35 th mile of pennies January Pennies: Souper Bowl of Caring for the Shalom Center Soup Kitchen ($86.96) February Pennies: Kenosha Literacy Council March Pennies: The Shalom Center When you buy you donate to the Church s Ministries Buy your SCRIP cards to use for your every day purchases for food, gas, drugstore items, etc. - when you use a SCRIP card for your purchases a percentage of the card will benefit the church. EFT is green you do not write a check, but instead electronically transfer monies into the church bank account. Please consider signing up for this service.
