Salem UMC s 135 th Anniversary Celebration September 20 th & 21 st Our anniversary theme is: MANY GENERA- TIONS CONTINUE TO PRAISE THY WORKS Psalm 145:4. In honor of our 135th Church Anniversary, the Salem Family will gather for a Homecoming Celebration Dinner on Saturday, September 20 th. Our 135th Church Anniversary Worship Services will be held on Sunday, September 21 st at 9:30 am. This is a special celebration! Please plan to worship with us as we praise God and give thanks for the many blessings that has been bestowed upon the Salem Family during the past 135 years. Music Ministry Do you enjoy raising your voice in song? Why not consider joining one of our choirs! practices are held on Wednesday evenings Praise Power at 6:30 p.m. and Chancel at 7:30 p.m. All are welcome come and sing praises to the Lord! If Singing Isn t Your Thing Consider Joining the Handbell. Rehearsals are held on Tuesday evening from 7:00-8:00 p.m. (starting September 2)

Well I'm going home, Back to the place where I belong, And where your love has always been enough for me. So I'm going home.. CHRIS DAUGHTRY Home Home! Listen to the sound of the word. Home! Does it remind you of a place long ago? Home! Does the word evoke precious and sacred memories for you? Home! What moments flood your mind and bring a surprise tear Home! Home is a place where you are always welcome. It s where they not only know your name it is spoken with a feeling of endearment. It is a place where you don't have to prove yourself or struggle to belong. You belong! Home. The word evokes memories of Easter church service, Christmas dinners, family gatherings, baptisms, and good times like no other. The mention of home evokes memories of church., choir, potluck dinners, fellowship, and the place that promised hope, new life and a spiritual fulfillment by doing for others. Church conjures, in our consciousness, feelings of warmth and welcome, of security, serenity, of unconditional love, joy and peace. The Book of Acts or the Letters in Revelation proves that Jesus loves his church. He died for it, prays for it, lives for it, and is going to return for it. In the household of faith, whenever we are gathered together, there is Jesus in the midst, even if we're only two or three. Bernard of Clair Vaux wrote, "How sweet the Name of Jesus sounds in a believer's ear; it soothes his sorrows, heals his wounds, and drives away his fears." A church is not merely a place of pews and a pulpit, with a pastor and a congregation. It's a place where we are a FAMILY, at home because the host is Jesus Christ the Lord. And He inspires us to "learn of Him" and "love one another." For 135 years Salem United Methodist Church doors have been opened to welcome God s children home and the Lord has blessed our doors to be open for caring ministries and service. Generations have witnessed the promise and presence of the Holy Spirit as it has come to live within their hearts and reside there. Faithfully they and we have kept God Word and not denied his name. Standing on the promises of God, his Word is at the heart of Salem United Methodist Church. We preach it, teach it, study it, and truly know it. And it is not just the leadership, but every person in the church knows God's Word. The Bible - we must keep it, know it, walk in it, and love it. We must soak ourselves in the Word! But beyond the Word is the Lord himself. One of our old hymns puts it this way,

3 Beyond the sacred page I seek Thee, Lord. My spirit pants for Thee, O Living Word. BREAK THOU THE BREAD OF LIFE Coming home to Christ is the most celebrated and serious event of a lifetime. A hymnist wrote, "I've wandered far away from God, now I'm coming home... coming home, coming home, never more to roam; open wide thine arms of love; Lord, I'm coming home." As we gather on the 135th Anniversary of our beloved Salem United Methodist Church, I am overjoyed with excitement and jubilation! Since 1879, members of our Salem Church Family have been preaching, teaching, sharing and spreading the Good News of Jesus Christ. With each generation, our Church Family has been actively engaged in very passionate ways in sharing and spreading Jesus joy to all people. We pray that we have instilled in future generations the unbroken traditions of making Disciples for Jesus Christ, demonstrating our love of God through community outreach, ministries, and support that fosters Kingdom building. I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth. The one who plants and the one who waters have a common purpose, and each will receive wages according to the labor of each. For we are God s servants, working together; you are God s field, God s building. 1 Corinthians 3:6-9 Future generation, there is more that God require of thee. Will your eager mind say "yes? Will your heart and soul say, "yes?" Will your spirit say "yes?" Will you open up your heart and tell the Lord, "yes"? With a resounding YES we reply to God request in the following manner: I'll do what you want me to do. I'll say what you want me to say. I'll go, if you lead me. I won't be afraid. Yes, I want to do your will Jesus. I ll step out on you word Lord and declare your glory. I ll open up my heart, mind, and soul; lift my hands and tell God, "yes! God is calling me higher. There is more that I require of you Salem United Methodist Church. Don t be afraid. Will each of you say, yes? Will your heart and soul say yes? (Shekinah Glory Ministries Yes) God has a glorious, glorious future planned, and Salem United Methodist Church YOU - gets to play a vital and imperative role in it! To God be the glory! 4 Celebrate the End of Summer Sunday A special fifth Sunday Service at 9:30 a.m. on August 31 st Celebrate the end of summer with worship, fun and games and a pot luck barbecue. A sign up sheet for the Pot Luck can be found in the fellowship area. Share your harvest by bringing produce from your garden which will be donated to the Sharing Center. Impact Community 5,000 Hour Challenge The challenge is to do 5,000 hours of community service by the end of the year. Fill out your Impact Community slips and drop it in the collection plate or return to the church office. We are off to a great start as of 8/24/14 we have totaled 3,398 1/4 hours of service to the community. Noisy Offering On the second Sunday of the month our kids take a Noisy Offering, collecting coins for that month s Pennies for Mission designation. This month s Noisy Offering will be on Sunday, September 14 th. Money collected will to go to UMCOR Disaster Relief. They will be made into mats for the homeless in Chicago - What a wonderful way to recycle our shopping bags! The next All Committee Meeting night is scheduled for Thursday, September 18 th with Committees meeting at 6:30 p.m. followed by Church Council at 7:30 p.m. Need Your Blood Pressure Checked? 7 Pennies for Mission Pennies for Mission is our ongoing project where all of the coins in the collection plate each month are given to a special mission. We are traveling toward our 37 th mile. That means that since we started Pennies for Mission in 1989 we have sent over $32,800 to missions all over the world. July Pennies: The Salvation Army ($ 83.16) August Pennies: School Supplies through The Sharing Center September Pennies: UMCOR Disaster Relief SCRIP - When you buy you donate to the Church s Ministries Buy your SCRIP cards to use for your every day purchases for food, gas, drugstore items, etc. - when you use a SCRIP card for your purchases a percentage of the card will benefit the church. You can designate how your funds are allocated within the church s books (for General and/or Capital funds). There are no bank fees for you to pay and there is complete accountability of your giving. EFT is green you do not write a check, but instead electronically transfer monies into the church bank account. Please consider signing up for this service.
