2 Q and A with Your Pastor by Dr. Eric Costanzo 1 Thessalonians 2:13: And we also thank God continually because, when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as a human word, but as it actually is, the word of God, which is indeed at work in you who believe. It has been a whirlwind of activity and immersion the last couple of weeks as my family has begun settling in here at STBC. Above anything else I have noticed, I am extremely impressed with our church s commitment to God s Word that points in every way to the good news about Jesus Christ. As the verse above says, God s Word truly is at work here at STBC, and it is evident in your lives, speech, and actions. As I continue to get to know you all better, I would like to give you more opportunities to know me better. In the weeks leading up to my first Sunday, individuals and groups have asked me several great questions. Many of those questions have had common themes or subjects, but not everyone has had the chance to hear the answers. For the next two Sunday evenings, I would like to give our entire church that opportunity again. Tonight, I will answer the questions listed below and we can also have dialogue as the opportunity presents itself. How would you describe the essentials of your faith and doctrine? Why are you a Baptist and why should our church stay Baptist? Are you an expositional teacher and preacher and why? What is your overall ministry philosophy for our church? What is your philosophy on missions? How will you emphasize ministry to our families; and to preschoolers, children, and youth? How do you see our church serving the community of Tulsa in more effective ways? During this next week I would like for you, as my new church family, to submit some questions to me that I can answer on the following Sunday (6/19). You can ask personal questions, theological questions, practical questions, or anything else you would like to ask. Depending on the number of questions received, I might not be able to cover all. So please submit your questions to me ASAP at eric@southtulsa.org or you can leave them with Carolyn Larkin at the reception desk. You can follow me on and read more at my website, ericcostanzo.me. SUMMER MUSIC ACTIVITY FOR KIDS BEGINS MONDAY! The time for PreSMAK and SMAK is here! The theme for PreSMAK is Love Notes from God. Boys and girls will rotate around three classrooms learning truths from the Bible. Children will make instruments, sing fun songs and participate in exciting activities that teach musical concepts and spiritual truths about what the Bible says. PreSMAK is June 13-15, 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. (ages 3 years-kindergarten). There will also be a special Praise ntation for children and parents Wednesday, June 15, beginning at 6:00 p.m. in the Worship Center. The cost for PreSMAK is $20. Each child will receive a t-shirt and a CD. It s not too late to enroll online at southtulsa.org or at the table by the Preschool Welcome Center. The theme for SMAK is Dr. Newheart s Neck-Up Check-Up. Boys and girls will sing songs, have movement and instrument activities and learn an entire musical in just one week as they learn that God is concerned about what we see, hear, speak and what is in our hearts. SMAK is June 13-17, 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. (finished grade 1-grade 6). The boys and girls will learn the musical in one week and present it on Friday evening in the gym, followed by a Pie Fellowship. Each child should bring a sack lunch and drink each day. The cost for SMAK is $30. This includes a t-shirt and the entrance fees for each of the daily activities. Monday will see a movie in the gym at STBC; Tuesday and Wednesday half of the group will go bowling (wear socks) and the other half will go to the Jenks High School Planetarium; Thursday we will go to Bounce U (bring socks) and Friday we will present the musical at Aberdeen Heights Assisted Living at 1:00 p.m. SMAK is full for this year! Both programs are incredible opportunities for children to learn more about God and His plan for their lives as they learn fun music and have fantastic activities! Please pray for the preschool and children s music camps. Youth Choir Tour The Youth Choir has returned from their tour to Waco, Texas last week. They worked with Mission Waco in ministry projects including their homeless shelter. They also sang at churches and retirement homes. They returned Saturday night, June 4 and their STBC home concert was Sunday evening, June students and 13 sponsors participated in the trip. A big thanks goes to the STBC family for their prayers, encouragement, and support. 4 June 12, 2016 the channel

STAY CONNECTED by Dru Finley On the Anvil We live in a world that has more opinions than it has people. If you re not sure about that statement, just ask someone and they ll give you their opinion. But, whether they realize it or not every person moves past opinion to bias. It rings out in every person s heart. Whether an atheist, agnostic, or a Christian, we all have our bias. It is not a matter of whether one is biased or not. It is really a question of which bias is the best bias with which to be biased. Therefore one must ask, how can the best bias be determined? To answer this question we must look to see what is the thing that is forming our bias. You can easily substitute the word bias with worldview, because that is what a bias is. It is that thing by which every other thing in a Help boys and girls experience exciting Bible stories, amazing crafts, music, snacks and recreation. It not only defines the person, but it defines the beliefs that shape that person. For the Christian there is one thing that we must allow our bias to be formed from, and that is the Word of God. In other words, we should not come to the Bible with our preconceived ideas, or biases in order to make the Bible mold to our thoughts. Rather, our thoughts are to be formed on the anvil of God s Word! Paul states the argument this way, We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ (2 Corinthians 10:5). Christ is the standard, and we are to form all of our beliefs or biases from His Word. It is when we do this that we will live in accordance with His will and plan and therefore experience true freedom. The good news for us is that God s Word is unshakable! It is when we place our lives upon His truth and allow our biases to be formed by His truth that we will have unshakable lives. His Word is true and trustworthy, and the life formed by it will have strength against arguments and lofty opinions that this world presents. John Clifford is attributed with a poem that illustrates this truth: Last eve I paused beside the blacksmith s door, And heard the anvil ring the vesper chime; Then looking in, I saw upon the floor, Old hammers, worn with beating years of time. How many anvils have you had, said I, To wear and batter all these hammers so? Just one, said he, and then with twinkling eye, The anvil wears the hammers out, you know. And so, I thought, the anvil of God s Word, For ages skeptic blows have beat upon; Yet, though the noise of falling blows was heard, The anvil is unharmed the hammers gone. by John Clifford How we live is determined by our bias or worldview, and the mind is where those begin. So, if we are to live the Godly life that we desire, and be unshaken from lofty opinions of this world, we must begin by placing our mind upon the Anvil of His Word! 6 June 12, 2016 the channel

7 June 6 June 12 Come now, you who say, Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring.
