3 ROSE RINGER AND ADULT CHOIR - will begin rehearsals on September 6 and continue every Thursday evening. Rose Ringers: 6-7 p.m. and Adult Choir 7:15-8:15 p.m. All are welcome to join us as we proclaim Christ in our music. We work with your schedules and appreciate any time that you can be with us. See Freda or any choir member to express your interest in sharing your musical talents that have been graciously given to you. BIBLE PRESENTATION - During worship on September 9, Bibles will be presented to some of our church family's younger readers. In this way, parents, baptismal sponsors, and the congregation together get a chance to live in to our baptismal promises to nurture these children in their growth in faith. If you have a rising 3rd grader (or a 4th grader who may not have received a Bible last year!) please let Kathleen know or or call the church office. SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHERS NEEDED - If you are interested in teaching Sunday School this school year please see Kathleen. Child protection clearances will be needed, the church can give direction in how to acquire these. ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL - Pastor s Class 9:30 on Sundays FAMILY CENTER - Both adult classes will be joining together on September 9 at 9:30 in Meeting Room 2 to have conversation with Annette Searfoss, working to create a Family Center in our county. Beginning Sept 16 - THE REFUGEE CRISIS There are more than 20 million refugees in the world today men, women, and children forced from their homes by violence and persecution. This small group dialogue will invite you to look beyond the headlines and into the real experiences of displaced people to determine what a faith-filled response to this ongoing crisis might look like. This dialogue will also be taking place on Mondays at 3:00 beginning Monday, September 10. SEPARATION AND DIVORCE RECOVERY SUPPORT GROUP meets on Monday evenings 7:00-8:30 p.m. at The Wholeness Center, 19 South Main Street (on the square) Chambersburg Session will begin Monday, September 10 th thru October 15 th Sessions will begin January 14 th thru February 18 th and March 18 th thru 22 nd. We are excited to announce that the sign is completed and will be dedicated on Wednesday, September 26 at the beginning of their weekly 11:45 Eucharist Service. We are hopeful that many from our congregation will be able to attend and share our support for this important ministry. There will be a lunch following worship on campus and all from First are being treated! God s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit given to us. 4 * 4 CELEBRATION DAY at the Luther Ridge Retirement Community will be on Saturday, September 29, Members of our congregation are invited to help support the day by becoming Friends of Celebration Day for a donation of $5 per name. Checks should be made out to Auxiliary to Lutheran Social Services. All names will be listed on a special bulletin insert. Please turn in your name and donation by today to Janet Friend or Tudy Gates. Thank YOU for your support! First Lutheran will have Flea Market tables at Celebration Day so start collecting items you would like to donate. SCHOOL KITS - Thank you all very much for your contributions. The items still needed are scissors and 70 sheet notebooks. Please place items in the box by the poster. For more information check out the poster outside of the office. VOLUNTEERS WELCOME FOR BACK TO SCHOOOL EVENT A great big thank you to everyone who took a tag from our Underwear Tree and purchased items for Saturday s event. With two grants from Thrivent we were able to purchase items to supplement our inventory. On Friday, August 24, from 1p.m. - 3 p.m. we will be setting up. On Saturday volunteers are needed from 12 p.m. - 3 p.m. to help distribute items as families come in. Contact Mary Gotwald, Nancy Fricke, or Bev Rebok if you can help - or just show up! YOUTH & FAMILY PICNIC - Come out and celebrate the end of summer with a youth and family picnic on August 26 at 5 p.m. at Gerry and Rose Wilson s house. ALIVE will be September at Camp Nawakwa. Alive is an event for middle school youth. There will be friends, games, worship, faith conversation, and a campfire. Theme - Dear Hate... Responding to hate in ways that reflect the love, grace and forgiveness we share in Christ. Registration is open NOW -- please talk to Kathleen before August 26. WINTERFEST will be on December 8 & 9, 2018 at Spooky Nook. Winterfest, a weekend away for high school youth. Space is extremely limited! Please RSVP with Kathleen before August 26! YOUTH & PARENTS - as you start to get activity schedules for the fall, please let Kathleen know about any games, concerts, or other events so that the congregation can support you as you use the talents with which God has gifted you. ADULT CHOIR AND ROSE RINGER S KICK OFF PICNIC will be held on August 30 at Tim and Mary Gotwald s home. Let us celebrate the return to our fall season! Both groups welcome new people to this event. Come out and let us mix and mingle before we get serious with our rehearsals. Drinks, burgers and hot dogs will be provided and others may bring a dish to share. Time is 6pm. There will be a sign-up sheet on the choir bulletin board. Let us know if you will be joining us. God gives all of us the same abundance of time 24 hours in every day, and it s so easy to waste! Fill us with such a knowledge of his presence that we may be strengthened and sustained by his risen life to serve you continually, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. Please be seated. 8 GOSPEL John 6:51-58 The Holy Gospel according to St. John the 6 th chapter. Glory to you, O Lord. Jesus said, 51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats of this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh. 52 The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, How can this man give us his flesh to eat? 53 So Jesus said to them, Very truly, I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. 54 Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood have eternal life, and I will raise them up on the last day; 55 for my flesh is true food and my blood is true drink. 56 Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood abide in me, and I in them. 57 Just as the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever eats me will live because of me. 58 This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like that which your ancestors ate, and they died. 10 APOSTLE S CREED Let us confess our faith in God. I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. 12 OFFERING PRAYER Let us pray. Merciful God, you open wide your hand and satisfy the need of every living thing. You have set this feast before us. Open our hands to receive it. Open our hearts to embrace it. Open our lives to live it. We pray this through Christ our Lord. Amen. DIALOG The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. PREFACE It is indeed right and salutary that we should at all times and in all places offer thanks and praise to you, O Lord, holy Father, through Christ our Lord; who on this day overcame death and the grave, and by his glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. And so, with the Church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: SANCTUS (Sing Twice) EUCHARISTIC PRAYER Holy God, our Maker, Redeemer, and Healer, in the harmonious world of your creation the plants and animals, the seas and stars were whole and well in your praise. When sin had scarred the world, you sent your Son to heal our ills and to form us again into one. In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. Send your Spirit upon us and this meal: as grains scattered on the hillside become one bread, so let your Church be gathered from the ends of the earth, that all may be fed with the Bread of life, your Son. Through him all glory and honor is yours, Almighty Father, with the Holy Spirit, in your holy Church, both now and forever. Amen
