CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS Blessed be the holy Trinity, one God, who stretches out the heavens, who sends light to the nations, who gives breath to us all. Amen. Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another. Silence for reflection and self-examination. Loving God, we confess that we have turned from your way to follow our own ways. Forgive us for the times we have spoken or acted too quickly; we have not spoken or acted at all; we have hurt those closest to us; we have hurt those we have yet to know; we have thought more about ourselves than others; we have thought less of ourselves than we ought. Turn us around, and give us a fresh start, so that we can live again as your children. Amen. Even when we have done wrong, God makes us right. Even when we have made mistakes, God puts us together. God never tires of calling us beloved children. Hear God say to you now: Your sins are forgiven, For the sake of Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen. You may choose to offer the peace of the Lord through the shaking of hands along with spoken word, or to speak the words without shaking hands. Please be respectful of others health concerns throughout the cold and flu season. Please turn and face the cross in procession. 3

WALL OF ENVELOPES-Help our youth get to Texas! Four youth from First head to Houston in June for a life-changing week of worship, fellowship, and service alongside 30,000 youth from across the country, and they need your support! Take an envelope (or several) off the wall between the Fellowship Hall and Memorial Hall, along the ramp downstairs, and return it to the church office with both a donation in the dollar amount specified on the front of the envelope and your name and address so we can thank you. Checks should be made payable to "First Lutheran Church -- Youth Savings Account." Please also be holding these youth in prayer as they prepare for this adventure! HATS, MITTENS, AND SCARVES PROJECT- The Neighborhood Task Team has hung on First s fence a total of 409 items to keep our neighbors warm. Within hours all of the hats, scarves and mittens were removed. We will continue to collect items for this project throughout the year. Remember the collection is for men, women and children. Thanks to all for helping to keep our neighbors warm. WORLD DAY OF PRAYER will be held at Zion Reformed Church of UCC, 259 South Main Street, Chambersburg, Friday March 2 at 1:30 p.m. Parking is at the rear of the church. Theme: All God s Creation is Very Good! CRUSADERS FOR CHRIST-You are invited to a Dinner Theater Production of Million Dollar Meatballs, by Todd Wallinger, on March 2,3, and 4, 2018 at Solomon s Lutheran Church Fellowship Center. You will find two bumbling jewel thieves running from the cops and finding themselves in hot water at Chez Monyeu, a restaurant so bad the mice are the only repeat customers! And that is just the start of their problems. A restaurant with a chef that just walked out and a culinary critic on his way, what to do? Thinking the thieves famous French chefs begins more antics in the kitchen when they serve crispy meatballs. Where are those stolen diamonds? Find out in this deliciously funny farce! Come hungry for meatballs. Fellowship and laughter! When do feel dim, more in darkness than in light? Everyone does once in a while. Here we are reminded that God s eternal light always shines in our hearts. As stewards of the mysteries of God, in prayer and faith we draw close to the light. CHILDREN S MESSAGE WORD FIRST READING 2 Kings 2: Now when the Lord was about to take Elijah up to heaven by a whirlwind, Elijah and Elisha were on their way from Gilgal. 2 Elijah said to Elisha, Stay here; for the Lord has sent me as far as Bethel. But Elisha said, As the Lord lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you. So they went down to Bethel. 3 The company of prophets who were in Bethel came out to Elisha, and said to him, Do you know that today the Lord will take your master away from you? And he said, Yes, I know; keep silent. 4 Elijah said to him, Elisha, stay here; for the Lord has sent me to Jericho. But he said, As the Lord lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you. So they came to Jericho. 5 The company of prophets who were at Jericho drew near to Elisha, and said to him, Do you know that today the Lord will take your master away from you? And he answered, Yes, I know; be silent. 6 Then Elijah said to him, Stay here; for the Lord has sent me to the Jordan. But he said, As the Lord lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you. So the two of them went on. 7 Fifty men of the company of prophets also went, and stood at some distance from them, as they both were standing by the Jordan. 8 Then Elijah took his mantle and rolled it up, and struck the water; the water was parted to the one side and to the other, until the two of them crossed on dry ground. 9 When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, Tell me what I may do for you, before I am taken from you. Elisha said, Please let me inherit a double share of your spirit. 10 He responded, You have asked a hard thing; yet, if you see me as I am being taken from you, it will be granted you; if not, it will not. 11 As they continued walking and talking, a chariot of fire and horses of fire separated the two of them, and Elijah ascended in a whirlwind into heaven. 12 Elisha kept watching and crying out, Father, father! The chariots of Israel and its horsemen! But when he could no longer see him, he grasped his own clothes and tore them in two pieces. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 22 7

PSALM Psalm 50:1-6 1 The mighty one, God the Lord, has spoken; calling the earth from the rising of the sun to its setting. 2 Out of Zion, perfect in its beauty, God shines forth in glory. 3 Our God will come and will not keep silence; with a consuming flame before, and round about a raging storm. 4 God calls the heavens and the earth from above to witness the judgment of the people. 5 Gather before me my loyal followers, those who have made a covenant with me and sealed it with sacrifice. 6 The heavens declare the rightness of God s cause, for it is God who is judge. SECOND READING 2 Corinthians 4:3-6 3 Even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. 4 In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. 5 For we do not proclaim ourselves; we proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord and ourselves as your slaves for Jesus sake. 6 For it is the God who said, Let light shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Please stand as you are able. Silence for burial of alleluia. 8 21

Please stand as you are able. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION TABLE BLESSING May the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ strengthen you and keep you in his grace. Amen. BURIAL OF THE ALLELUIA Children s Alleluia Music Today we bring to a close the season of joy and light - the season of Epiphany. We began this season celebrating with the Magi as they worshipped the infant King. We recall the Spirit of God, who was shining on Jesus at his Baptism. And, finally today, we remembered the brilliant love of the Father at the Lord s Transfiguration. During this week, we begin the season of preparation, the season of Lent. Men: We focus on our Lord s passion. Women: We regret our tendency to distance ourselves from God. All: Through prayer, fasting, and almsgiving we will reflect on God s most gracious gift. Before Lent, we bury a friend. The Alleluia with which we sing and shout our praise during the joyous times is put away for this solemn season. It will not be gone forever. It will be brought forth again in joy when we celebrate the triumphant Feast of Easter. Christ is Risen! Alleluia! But for now, we bury our friend. Men: We bury it sorrowfully as we bury any friend. Women: We bury it expectantly as we look for its return. All : And we will shout Alleluia! as we celebrate the resurrection. The promise of the resurrection gives us hope that we will pass through the grave to eternal life. GOSPEL Mark 9:2-9 The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark the 9 th chapter. Glory to you, O Lord. 2 Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain apart, by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, 3 and his clothes became dazzling white, such as no one on earth could bleach them. 4 And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, who were talking with Jesus. 5 Then Peter said to Jesus, Rabbi, it is good for us to be here; let us make three dwellings, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah. 6 He did not know what to say, for they were terrified. 7 Then a cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud there came a voice, This is my Son, the Beloved; listen to him! 8 Suddenly when they looked around, they saw no one with them any more, but only Jesus. 9 As they were coming down the mountain, he ordered them to tell no one about what they had seen, until after the Son of Man had risen from the dead. The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. Please be seated. SERMON Silence for reflection follows the sermon. PASTORAL PRAYER 20 Please stand as you are able. 9

APOSTLE S CREED Let us confess the faith in which we are baptized. I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION Let us pray, have mercy, O God

MEAL GATHERING OF GIFTS An offering is gathered for the mission of the church, including the care of those in need. Online giving is available at felcc.org ANTHEM All Hail the Power by Don Marsh All hail, all hail the pow r of Jesus name! All hail, all hail, all hail the pow r of Jesus name! Let angels prostrate fall. Bring forth the royal diadem and crown him, crown him, crown him, crown him Lord, the Lord of all. Ye chosen seed of Israel s race, ye ransomed from the fall, hail him who saves you by his grace and crown him, and crown him, Let every kindred, every tribe on this terrestrial ball, on this terrestrial ball, to him all majesty ascribe and crown him, crown him, crown him, crown him, and crown him lord of all. O that with yonder sacred throng, we at his feet may fall. We ll join the everlasting song and crown him, He alone is worthy; for he alone is worthy, for he alone is worthy, Christ, the Lord. Thepow r of Jesus name and crown him Lord of all, Lord, Lord of all! Please stand as you are able. LORD S PRAYER Gathered into one by the Holy Spirit, let us pray as Jesus taught us. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. INVITATION TO COMMUNION Come. Be filled with light and life. Thanks be to God. Please be seated. All Christians who believe that Jesus is truly present in the bread (body of Christ) and in the wine (blood of Christ) are welcome at the Lord's Table. To receive Holy Communion, please come down the center aisle, take a glass (the prefilled glasses contain grape juice), and gather at the altar. Non-communing children and adults may come forward for a blessing. LAMB OF GOD 12 17

EUCHARISTIC PRAYER Blessed are you, O holy God: you are the Life and Light of all. By your powerful word you created all things. Through the prophets you called your people to be a light to the nations. OFFERTORY Blessed are you for Jesus, your Son. He is your Light, shinning in our darkness and revealing to us your mercy and might. In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. By your Spirit bless us and this meal, that, refreshed with this heavenly food, we may be light for the world, revealing the brilliance of your Son. Through him all glory and honor is yours, Almighty Father, with the Holy Spirit, in your holy Church, both now and forever. Amen

OFFERING PRAYER Merciful God, receive the gifts we bring, our selves, our time, and our possessions. Through this meal unite us as your body, shining with the light of your justice and mercy; for the sake of him who gave himself for us, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. SANCTUS DIALOG The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. PREFACE It is indeed right and salutary that we should at all times and in all places offer thanks and praise to you, O Lord, holy Father, through Christ our Lord. Sharing our life, he lived among us to reveal your glory and love, that our darkness should give way to his own brilliant light. And so, with the Church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: 14 15
