3 YOUTH & PARENTS - as you start to get activity schedules for the fall, please let Kathleen know about any games, concerts, or other events so that the congregation can support you as you use the talents with which God has gifted you. ADULT CHOIR AND ROSE RINGER S KICK OFF PICNIC will be held on August 30 at Tim and Mary Gotwald s home. Let us celebrate the return to our fall season! Both groups welcome new people to this event. Come out and let us mix and mingle before we get serious with our rehearsals. Drinks, burgers and hot dogs will be provided and others may bring a dish to share. Time is 6pm. There will be a sign-up sheet on the choir bulletin board. Let us know if you will be joining us. WORSHIP TIME CHANGE - Our summer worship schedule will continue through the weekend of September 2 with worship at 9:30 a.m. ROSE RINGER AND ADULT CHOIR - will begin rehearsals on September 6 and continue every Thursday evening. Rose Ringers: 6-7 p.m. and Adult Choir 7:15-8:15 p.m. All are welcome to join us as we proclaim Christ in our music. We work with your schedules and appreciate any time that you can be with us. See Freda or any choir member to express your interest in sharing your musical talents that have been graciously given to you. BIBLE PRESENTATION - During worship on September 9, Bibles will be presented to some of our church family's younger readers. In this way, parents, baptismal sponsors, and the congregation together get a chance to live in to our baptismal promises to nurture these children in their growth in faith. If you have a rising 3rd grader (or a 4th grader who may not have received a Bible last year!) please let Kathleen know or or call the church office. SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHERS NEEDED - If you are interested in teaching Sunday School this school year please see Kathleen. Child protection clearances will be needed, the church can give direction in how to acquire these. UNITED LUTHERAN SIGN DEDICATION - Our congregation has been invited to attend a short service of dedication of the United Lutheran Seminary Chapel sign, followed by the weekly communion service on Wednesday, September 26, 2018 at the Gettysburg Campus. Following the 11:45 AM worship, the seminary would treat all who attend to lunch on campus with the students. Our congregation has contributed $25,000 to the sign, so it would be wonderful to have a nice representation from our congregation there. Please sign up on the bulletin board if you would have an interest in attending. Please indicate if you would be willing to drive, or would prefer to ride with someone. LAUNDRY DAY #6- is scheduled for Saturday November 10, 2018 in conjunction with a shoe distribution and a Hats Scarves and Mittens give away. Please continue to keep those quarters rolling in. Our goal is again to have 60 packages of $5.00 worth of quarters for this event. We are accepting shoe donations and hats, scarves and mittens anytime. You may leave your donations in Memorial Hall. Many volunteers will be needed for this outreach. The Neighborhood Task Team would love to have you join us for this event. You will enjoy meeting our neighbors. Guaranteed. 4 * ANNOUNCEMENTS BLESSING OF STUDENTS, TEACHERS, AND BACKPACKS - will take place at the time of the children s message today. As our students and teachers eagerly await the new year, we will ask for God s blessing upon them as they return to the classroom that their year of teaching and learning will be a meaningful one. LADIES BREAKFAST-The Women s Fellowship Breakfast will be on August 15 at Johnnies at 8:30 a.m. All ladies of the church are invited for food and fellowship. LOWER SUSQUAHANNA WELCA SYNOD CONVENTION Saturday August 18, 2018 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Carlisle. The Ingather offering will be going to Carlisle CARES to serve the emergency needs of those without a home with compassion, respect and resources. Joyce Ray is President of this convention and Jean Reed will be our voting delegate. All women are invited. Also to be collected at this event are gift cards for Giant, Weis, and Walmart for use at the Seminary Food Bank. Nearly 80% of the students at the seminary make use of the Food Bank. Cost of attendance at the seminary is now $28,000 annually, and the opportunity to use the Food Bank is invaluable to the students. In addition, recyclable shopping bags (not plastic) are in need. Registration form is available on Synod website. BACK TO SCHOOL SOCIAL FOR NEIGHBORHOOD KIDS We are now collecting new underwear and socks for children in grades K - 5, as well as school and art supplies. Our second give-away for families in need in our neighborhood is set for Saturday, August 25 from Noon 3:00 p.m. We have learned from the nurses in neighborhood schools that many children come to school wearing the same pair of underwear all week. Shoes are often worn without socks, even in cold weather. We can help! There is an UNDERWEAR TREE in Memorial Hall with tags indicating sizes and styles needed and a basket to receive the items. You are invited to take a tag or two, purchase the items, and place them in the basket. Other items we will be collecting include school and art supplies and children s books (gently used books are fine). These were very popular at last year s event! YOUTH & FAMILY PICNIC - Come out and celebrate the end of summer with a youth and family picnic on August 26 at 5 p.m. at Gerry and Rose Wilson s house. ALIVE will be September at Camp Nawakwa. Alive is an event for middle school youth. There will be friends, games, worship, faith conversation, and a campfire. Theme - Dear Hate... Responding to hate in ways that reflect the love, grace and forgiveness we share in Christ. Registration is open NOW -- please talk to Kathleen before August 26. WINTERFEST will be on December 8 & 9, 2018 at Spooky Nook. Winterfest, a weekend away for high school youth. Space is extremely limited! Please RSVP with Kathleen before August 26! 4 17

Stewardship Snippet Ephesians 4:31-32 Put away from you all bitterness and wrath and anger and wrangling and slander, together with all malice, and be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ has forgiven you. As God s called and blessed community, Christians live by different rules than the world, which is too-often angry and blameful. We are good stewards of community and relationships when we do our best to live with kindness and love. 16 5

6 PRAYER OF THE DAY The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. Gracious God, your blessed Son came down from heaven to be the true bread that gives life to the world. Give us this bread always, that he may live in us and we in him, and that, strengthened by this food, we may live as his body in the world, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. WORD BLESSING OF STUDENTS, TEACHERS, & BACKPACKS FIRST READING 1 Kings 19:4-8 4 Elijah went a day s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a solitary broom tree. He asked that he might die: It is enough; now, O Lord, take away my life, for I am no better than my ancestors. 5 Then he lay down under the broom tree and fell asleep. Suddenly an angel touched him and said to him, Get up and eat. 6 He looked, and there at his head was a cake baked on hot stones, and a jar of water. He ate and drank, and lay down again. 7 The angel of the Lord came a second time, touched him, and said, Get up and eat, otherwise the journey will be too much for you. 8 He got up, and ate and drank; then he went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights to Horeb the mount of God. Help us to share you with others so in coming to you, they may believe and never hunger or thirst again. In Jesus name we pray. Amen. BLESSING May God, whose power working in us can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine, grant you the gifts of faith and hope. Almighty God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, bless you now and forever. 8 Let us pray the Lord s Prayer together. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION LORD S PRAYER Gathered into one by the Holy Spirit, let us pray as Jesus taught us. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. INVITATION TO COMMUNION Come and receive. Thanks be to God. Please be seated. All Christians who believe that Jesus is truly present in the bread (body of Christ) and in the wine (blood of Christ) are welcome at the Lord's Table. To receive Holy Communion, please come down the center aisle, take a glass (the prefilled glasses contain grape juice), and gather at the altar. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. 41 Then the Jews began to complain about him because he said, I am the bread that came down from heaven. 42 They were saying, Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, I have come down from heaven? 43 Jesus answered them, Do not complain among yourselves. 44 No one can come to me unless drawn by the Father who sent me; and I will raise that person up on the last day. 45 It is written in the prophets, And they shall all be taught by God. OFFERING PRAYER Let us pray. Merciful God, you open wide your hand and satisfy the need of every living thing. You have set this feast before us. Open our hands to receive it. Open our hearts to embrace it. Open our lives to live it. We pray this through Christ our Lord. Amen. HOLY COMMUNION And so we remember. As Jesus gathered his disciples for a meal on the night before his death, he blessed the bread and wine and spoke these words to them. Take this bread and eat, this is my body, given for you. And this cup of wine is the new covenant in my blood, shed for everyone for the forgiveness of sin. Remember me as you eat and drink, for I am the Bread of Life. 10 APOSTLE S CREED Let us confess our faith in God. I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
