3 LARC WORSHIP will begin Wednesday, February 21 st at 7pm with the theme of Lenten Offering to God. Please join us as we worship together as the Body of Christ: Lutherans, Anglicans and Roman Catholics. There will be a social time following each service at the host church. Participating kids will be given special backpacks once each week containing non-perishable food to meet their nutritional needs. February collection: Spaghetti and Meatballs; Ravioli; Beefaroni; and Lasagna. These are all individual serving containers. LARC SOUP DINNERS will begin on Wednesday, February 21 st at 5:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall, preceding LARC mid-week Lenten worship. Four youth from First head to Houston in June for a life-changing week of worship, fellowship, and service alongside 30,000 youth from across the country, and they need your support! Take an envelope (or several) off the wall between the Fellowship Hall and Memorial Hall, along the ramp downstairs, and return it to the church office with both a donation in the dollar amount specified on the front of the envelope and your name and address so we can thank you. Checks should be made payable to "First Lutheran Church -- Youth Savings Account." Please also be holding these youth in prayer as they prepare for this adventure! HATS, MITTENS, AND SCARVES PROJECT- The Neighborhood Task Team has hung on First s fence a total of 409 items to keep our neighbors warm. Within hours all of the hats, scarves and mittens were removed. We will continue to collect items for this project throughout the year. Remember the collection is for men, women and children. Thanks to all for helping to keep our neighbors warm. 22 WELCOME PRELUDE Please stand as you are able. PEACE Gathering CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS Blessed be the holy Trinity, one God, who stretches out the heavens, who sends light to the nations, who gives breath to us all. Amen. Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another. Please kneel or sit as you are able. Silence for reflection and self-examination. Loving God, we confess that we have turned from your way to follow our own ways. Forgive us for the times we have spoken or acted too quickly; we have not spoken or acted at all; we have hurt those closest to us; we have hurt those we have yet to know; we have thought more about ourselves than others; we have thought less of ourselves than we ought. Turn us around, and give us a fresh start, so that we can live again as your children. Amen. Even when we have done wrong, God makes us right. Even when we have made mistakes, God puts us together. God never tires of calling us beloved children. Hear God say to you now: Your sins are forgiven, For the sake of Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen. The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you. You may choose to offer the peace of the Lord through the shaking of hands along with spoken word, or to speak the words without shaking hands. 4 ANNOUNCEMENTS YOUTH GROUP-You re invited to be LEADERS in deciding: what should this youth group should look like. Join us today at 6pm in the youth room upstairs. We will brainstorm and dream about what we want this community to be, and how we can be the Church together as young people. Then we'll watch the Super Bowl together! There'll be snacks, music, fun, and Jesus! SOUPER BOWL OF CARING-Touchdown! A huge thank you to all who contributed to the Souper Bowl food collection. Surely you're anxious to know the final scores, so here they are: pasta steamed sauce 26-15, vegetables crushed fruits 47-14, and cake mix baked brownie mix Eleven extra-point items make for a grand total of 139 items so far. And don't forget the big showdown today, between flour and sugar! Collection will continue through this week, and then all items will be donated to local food pantries. SISTER MARGARET CIRCLE-On Tuesday, February 6 at 7:00 p.m. The Sister Margaret Circle will meet for bible study at the home of Bonnie McKenrick. We will be studying the book Bad Girls of the Bible, Sapphira. LAUNDRY DAY On February 11, 2018 the NTT will provide laundry assistance to our neighbors at Nana s Wash House next to the church. In addition to an envelope containing $5.00 worth of quarters, our neighbors are offered laundry pods and dryer sheets. Food, conversation and devotional materials are provided at the church. Coins and cash are accepted to support this out reach. The goal of having 60 envelopes of quarters ready to share is in sight. Presently 44 are ready to go. SHROVE TUESDAY-will be held on Tuesday, February 13 from 5-6:30 p.m. Pancakes, sausage and desserts will be on the menu for supper! All funds raised will be sent to help Angeline (adopted foster child in Kenya). The dinner is being sponsored by Thrivent Action Team. FLC Youth please plan on helping. DESSERTS NEEDED for Shrove Tuesday. A giving tree will be placed in Memorial Hall and all desserts can be brought in on February 13th. ASH WEDNESDAY is February 14. Several opportunities for worship are available. The first two services will be abbreviated with scripture, prayer, and the imposition of ashes. These services will last no longer than minutes. The evening service will be our traditional service including Holy Communion and music. This agency in Illinois provides comprehensive services to those impacted by domestic violence. The amount should be from $15-$25. Some stores that carry food, toiletries, household items, school supplies are Walmart, Target, Walgreens, etc. Please turn these into the church office or give them to Joyce Ray be February

God entrusts us to be good stewards of all we have, but especially our strength, our vision, our courage, our life-energy. And in using these gifts, we are not alone. BLESSING SENDING The God of glory dwell in you richly, name you beloved, and shine brightly on your path; and the blessing of almighty God; Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, be upon you and remain with you always. 8 SECOND READING 1 Corinthians 9: If I proclaim the gospel, this gives me no ground for boasting, for an obligation is laid on me, and woe to me if I do not proclaim the gospel! 17 For if I do this of my own will, I have a reward; but if not of my own will, I am entrusted with a commission. 18 What then is my reward? Just this: that in my proclamation I may make the gospel free of charge, so as not to make full use of my rights in the gospel. 19 For though I am free with respect to all, I have made myself a slave to all, so that I might win more of them. 20 To the Jews I became as a Jew, in order to win Jews. To those under the law I became as one under the law (though I myself am not under the law) so that I might win those under the law. 21 To those outside the law I became as one outside the law (though I am not free from God s law but am under Christ s law) so that I might win those outside the law. 22 To the weak I became weak, so that I might win the weak. 9 GOSPEL Mark 1:29-39 The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark the 1st chapter. Glory to you, O Lord. 29 As soon as Jesus and the disciples left the synagogue, they entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. 30 Now Simon s mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they told him about her at once. 31 He came and took her by the hand and lifted her up. Then the fever left her, and she began to serve them. 32 That evening, at sunset, they brought to him all who were sick or possessed with demons. 33 And the whole city was gathered around the door. 34 And he cured many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons; and he would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew him. 35 In the morning, while it was still very dark, he got up and went out to a deserted place, and there he prayed. 36 And Simon and his companions hunted for him. 37 When they found him, they said to him, Everyone is searching for you. 38 He answered, Let us go on to the neighboring towns, so that I may proclaim the message there also; for that is what I came out to do. 39 And he went throughout Galilee, proclaiming the message in their synagogues and casting out demons. 10 LORD S PRAYER Gathered into one by the Holy Spirit, let us pray as Jesus taught us. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. INVITATION TO COMMUNION Come. Be filled with light and life. Thanks be to God. Please be seated. To receive Holy Communion, please come down the center aisle, take a glass (the prefilled glasses contain grape juice), and gather at the altar. 11 EUCHARISTIC PRAYER Blessed are you, O holy God: you are the Life and Light of all. By your powerful word you created all things. Through the prophets you called your people to be a light to the nations. Blessed are you for Jesus, your Son. He is your Light, shinning in our darkness and revealing to us your mercy and might. In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. By your Spirit bless us and this meal, that, refreshed with this heavenly food, we may be light for the world, revealing the brilliance of your Son. Through him all glory and honor is yours, Almighty Father, with the Holy Spirit, in your holy Church, both now and forever. Amen. APOSTLE S CREED Let us confess the faith in which we are baptized. I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Sharing our life, he lived among us to reveal your glory and love, that our darkness should give way to his own brilliant light.
