Harmony January 2019 Greetings Parishioners, Your Vestry is working diligently to insure a smooth transition as we seek new clergy leadership for our Parish. Our goal is to be transparent where possible as we navigate through finding our new rector. As you know, Craig Taylor has graciously agreed to serve as the chair of the search committee. Those who will join Craig as committee members include: January at a glance 1/6 Epiphany 1/20 Annual Meeting: Vestry Elections 1/26 EYC Snow Tubing Trip Table of Contents News and Events P. 2-4 Fellowship Announcements P. 5-7 Vestry Candidates P Financials P. 12 Cathy Jordan Judy Hackett Doug Sanecki Dottie Clark Deb Richardson Bob Mills Brenda Swearingin Catherine Clifton We are grateful to the search committee members for taking on this important role. We are in GREAT hands! Their work will commence after we have the Interim Rector in place. Most of their work will begin later in the spring. There are certain seasons for rector searches to take place. Based on the type of search we chose, and given the timing of our need, Catherine Massey, Diocesan Canon, thinks it is likely that we will have a new rector in place around early Your Vestry will be focused in the next month or so on finding an Interim Rector. We have received the names of two potential candidates for this position. We hope to have an interim in place by the end of January or soon thereafter. We will let you know as this process unfolds. Please know that your Vestry and Kimberly, our Parish Administrator, are handling Parish business as usual. continued p. 2 1

Continued from p.1 News & Events Barbara Cooke, our Priest in the Gap, is generously helping as well. We are in good shape! While change is typically a bit stressful, our parish is strong, we have great things in place, and I have every confidence we will navigate these times in a healthy and productive way, culminating in a successful search for a rector to lead us into the future. Robin Bartlett Co-Senior Warden Deck the Halls Update Tommy and Maddie Testa pictured above. St. Andrew s hosted its first holiday fundraiser, Deck the Halls, on Saturday, December 8. Despite the threat of a major snow storm, it was well attended by both parishioners and community members. We now have a frame to use for future advertising banners, complete with spotlights. This greatly increased our visibility when marketing this event to the many cars that pass by the church every day. (The frame is easily removed when not in use, providing us with temporary signage when needed for special events.) A special thank you to Scott Durham for making that project a reality. Building on the traditions of past Bazaars and introducing new activities, we raised over $6,100 for our Mission and Outreach programs. A special thank you to all who contributed their time, talent and support to this special day. 2

News & Events A Wonderful Sendoff for BJ Sunday, December 2 was a day of mixed feelings: joy for 8 years of terrific leadership, sadness that it must end (so soon!), and pride that our priest was honored for his many qualities by being offered a prestigious new position. BJ delivered his final message to us at the morning services with his usual blend of humor, humility, and wisdom. At the 10 am service Debbie Dowd read the following blessing for BJ with much meaning and emotion: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face to shine upon you, and be gracious unto you. The Lord lift up his countenance upon you, and give you peace. And the congregation responded with a standing ovation! But that was just the beginning. On to the Parish Hall for a reception sponsored by the Vestry and volunteers, who truly outdid themselves! The choir offered a musical tribute to BJ with a modified version of the song I ve grown accustomed to your face. The words are printed in the next column. The Vestry gave BJ a beautiful, handmade, hand-painted green stole, along with a monetary gift from the congregation. A poster-sized picture of the stained-glass window in the Chapel titled Transformed by God was available for everyone to sign on the back as another parting gift. To BJ, from the Choir We ve grown accustomed to your face We ve grown accustomed to your wit We love your wife and kids We hope you know you helped us grow You interact with lots of charm You ve kept us safe, away from harm You led your flock with ease You brought young families You helped create a new Bazaar They ll all be memories for us now Oh how we loved the Holy Cow You called us each by name You joined in with the games Saw us through storms, helped us be warm We ve grown accustomed to your face We hope you ve loved this place and how we ll miss your grace All in all, it was a wonderful way to bid farewell to our wonderful priest! 3

Fellowship & Christian Formation EYC (Episcopal Youth Community) The EYC has been busy the past few months with both service learning projects and having fun and fellowship together. The youth made a meal for the Servant Center and a sign with messages from the youth to display during the meal. Everything was delivered to the Servant Center the week of Thanksgiving. The EYC had fun caroling and viewing the Sunset Hills neighborhood Christmas lights in December. Some parents and siblings joined the fun and helped drop off canned good donations while viewing the Christmas lights. The EYC will continue with more service learning projects and fun events in January. On January 6 the youth will be making cold weather supply kits for the Interactive Resource Center. EYC will not be meeting on January 20 due to the MLK holiday, Nate Taylor, Rosie Revell, Abby Tarara, Archer Hill, Eli Inman, Terrance Horne, Nolan Spears, Sam Fleming but are excited about a snow tubing trip to the NC mountains on January 26. 7 Fellowship & Christian Formation St. Andrew's Women's Retreat at Haw River State Park, March The planning team is excited about inviting all the women of St. Andrew's to this year's Women's Retreat. Whether you're young or old, single or married, newcomer or not - you are welcome! Again this year, the retreat will be at Haw River State Park from Friday evening to Saturday at 3 pm, March The 40 women who attended last year can still be heard talking about how they made deeper connections with women they only casually knew, and how inspiring the worship, reflections, and creative activities were. And that's the best advertising one could hope for! At this year's retreat, we will be saying Yes to Bishop Curry's invitation to re-orient our lives as Christians by taking up The Way of Love: Practices for a Jesus-centered life. Our world needs us to embody The Way of Love that was Jesus' way of being in the world. Visit episcopalchurch.org, where you can watch an inspiring video on the seven practices that will be the focus of our retreat: Turn, Learn, Pray, Worship, Bless, Go and Rest. Registration will begin in January and scholarships are available, so please don't be shy about asking for help. One night's stay and three meals are included in the modest registration fee. If your responsibilities at home are such that you cannot stay overnight, you are welcome to come as a commuter for a reduced fee. Save the date now, and look for announcements in January on how to register. Our facilitator this year will be the Rev. Barbara Cooke. For more information, please contact Shelley Kappauf at (336) or shelleykapp@gmail.com. It's Time to Sign Up for the February 8-9 Men's Retreat All St. Andrew's men are invited to attend our February 8-9 retreat at St. Francis Springs Prayer Center in Rockingham County. We'll start with dinner at 6 pm on Friday; check-in begins at 4 pm. The retreat will end around 4:15 pm on Saturday. The cost for a single room and three meals is $130. We hope everyone can attend the full retreat, but if you can't make it on Friday, join us Saturday morning for $30, which includes breakfast at 8 am and lunch. Some financial aid is available. We have a registration table in the Parish Hall on Sunday mornings. A deposit of $50 is required to hold a reservation, with the balance due by Sunday, January 27. The theme of the retreat is Strengthening our relationships with one another and with God, and the leader will be St. Andrew s own John de Beer. St. Francis Springs is a quiet, wooded place for our retreat. Check out their website at It's about a 30-to-45 -minute drive from Greensboro. We plan to organize carpools. 8 2019 Vestry Candidates Catherine Clifton was baptized in 1990 and confirmed in She has been attending St. Andrew s for five years and transferred her membership a year ago. She attends services every Sunday. If you were to describe St. Andrew's to a friend, what would you tell him/her? This is an easy question, because I ve described St. Andrew s to many friends and family members! St. Andrew s is a loving and welcoming church with all sorts of people working together to make Greensboro and the world a better place. There is something for everyone to be involved in, and people have a genuine interest in each other s lives. Why do you wish to serve on the Vestry? As the child of an Episcopal priest, I have grown up watching the Vestry members at each church work together to find and facilitate ways for their church to grow. The growth of St. Andrew s as well as the maintenance of its current strengths is very important to me, and I believe that I can bring some different perspectives and experiences to the Vestry as a member. Do you have previous experience in church leadership? When and where? I have held various unofficial positions in churches, including leading some of the music or youth programs. And, of course, I ve spent my whole life asking my dad and stepmom to explain the inner workings of their churches to me, and observing them in their leadership roles. Please tell us about your parish life and community activities. I am a member of the choir and am sometimes lucky enough to sing solos or highlighted small ensemble pieces. I co-taught the confirmation class with BJ Owens this past year, and have worked with the youth group this year as well. I am on the planning committee for the next Women s Retreat, and I am happy to help out however else I can, whether it s working the holiday market or representing the church in the community. Corinth Milikin was baptized in 1952 and confirmed in She has been a member of St. Andrew s for approximately 10 years. If you were to describe St. Andrew's to a friend, what would you tell him/her? In many ways, St. Andrew s is a typical Episcopal church with the church seasons, hymnal, prayer book, and liturgy that are easy to recognize. It is also a church that welcomes individuals of diverse backgrounds and spiritual paths. Individuals have the choice of Sunday worship only or they can explore the variety of opportunities to serve the congregation and/or the local community. Why do you wish to serve on the Vestry? I see Vestry membership as an opportunity to serve the congregation. Continued p. 9 8

Continued from p Vestry Candidates Do you have previous experience in church leadership? When and where? Yes, I was a Vestry member for 3 years (1995/6/7) at Church of the Good Shepherd, Taipei, Taiwan. In 1997, I was co-chairperson of the search committee for a priest for the English-speaking congregation. Please tell us about your parish life and community activities. My parish life and community activities have focused on service. Soon after moving back to Greensboro in 2017 and renewing my membership at St. Andrew s, I became one of the basket ladies and worked with the group making the gift baskets for the market last year and this year s Deck the Halls fundraiser. I also participate in the group knitting prayer shawls. I recently joined the Invite, Welcome, and Connect committee and was on the committee that planned the welcome lunch. At Christ Church in Norcross, GA., I was cofacilitator of the women s Sunday school class and volunteered with the quilting group, which funded outreach projects. At St. Mary and St. Martha of Bethany in Buford, GA., I was a Eucharistic minister, coordinated the food pantry donations, and made pillowcase dresses for donation. In the community, I have been an active volunteer with Habitat for Humanity, including builds in Wisconsin, Mexico, India, Thailand, and Haiti. I was also a ReStore volunteer for many years. Karen S. Rierson (formerly Russell) was baptized in 1963 and confirmed in She has been a member of St. Andrew s for approximately 26 years. If you were to describe St. Andrew's to a friend, what would you tell him/her? St. Andrew s is a welcoming, diverse and supportive gathering of people who love God and each other. The people of St. Andrew s are supportive of each other as we all walk through the challenges of daily life, and I have experienced this first hand through many friendships as well as spiritual growth. St. Andrew s is truly my church home. Why do you wish to serve on the Vestry? I feel that my past experience on the Vestry, as well as several other volunteer positions I have held within the church, give me the insight to help our church family through the current transition period. I believe that with an effective transition we can continue our support for each other as well as continue to grow our positive impact on the community at large. I feel that as a member of the Vestry I can assist with the guidance needed to continue the spiritual growth of our church membership. Do you have previous experience in church leadership? When and where? Yes, all at St. Andrew s: Vestry, / Co-Senior Warden, 2002/ Senior Warden, Continued p. 10 9
