1 Harmony The Work of the People Liturgy is often regarded as the work of the people. At St. Andrew s, that is true every week. It takes over 50 people each and every Sunday to make our worship services what they are. If that number surprises you a little, then that means all 50 of us are doing our jobs well. The work of a Sunday morning volunteer or liturgical minister is quite simply to enable each person coming through the door to worship, celebrate, sing, pray, and thank God for the blessings of their lives. I cannot imagine a better way to serve God than to make that kind of weekly worship possible. We serve in so many ways. Our Sunday morning roster includes acolytes, readers, Eucharistic Ministers, ushers, Children s Chapel leaders, Altar Guild members, readers, greeters, sound board operators, money counters, children s and adult formation teachers, coffee hour providers, vestry-persons-of-themonth and of course clergy. To simplify scheduling, we are going to move many of these ministries to a once-a-month schedule in order to allow folks to have more weeks off (to come to church and just worship, of course) than weeks where they have a specific role to play. We re going to give it a try for August through January. This will not include those ministries that have a schedule all their own such as Altar Guild, Choir, Acolytes and Readers. We have enough active members to cover all these roles so long as we spread out the duties. Most folks will have one volunteer role a month and will only take on an additional role if they wish to do so. Once a month ministries will include: Ushers: W elcome folks into the Sanctuary, offer assistance as needed, direct folks to the altar for communion Greeters: Meet people in the parking lot and the w alkw ay before church, offer supportive contact to those who are new to St. Andrew s Welcome Team: Reach out intentionally to first-time visitors to St. Andrew s and assist with follow-up in the days after Children s Chapel Leaders: lead m id-service offering for children Children s & Youth Sunday Formation Teachers: lead classes after church Nursery Back-Up: on-call folks to assist our Nursery workers if they need to be absent or if we have an overflow of infants on a given Sunday Can you pitch in once a month? If so, be sure to contact me as early in July as possible as we have begun to prepare and schedule. 3 St. Andrew s Site Plan The 2013 St. Andrew s Mission and Renewal Plan direct us to Develop an Architectural Master Plan that: Provides warm, inviting and accessible spaces for Children and Youth Ministries. Makes the Entire Campus Fully Accessible to All Improves Flexibility of Space for Worship, Education, Music and Meeting Facilities Provides Mission-Focused Spaces for our Community May be Planned and Executed in Discrete Phases Site Planning Process Update The St. Andrew s Site Planning process ramped up in June. The team met several times with Phil Keister, the architect from Tise-Keister who is working with us. Phil comes to us with a vast portfolio of designing church spaces. He is a very fine listener who offers creative thoughts on how to meet the many needs our space has while also asking about what is working well. This month we also had user group interviews with Phil. These representative samples of folks from different ministries allowed Phil to get a sense of how our spaces are currently being used, what is working well and where we are experiencing, in Phil s words, pinch points. These groups of usually 2-3 people included: Office staff Liturgy/Sanctuary (Altar Guild & Clergy) Vestry Wardens Welcome and Engagement Kitchen Senior Fellowship & Accessibility Concerns Mission & Outreach Community ( outside ) user groups Urn Garden Music Ministry Adult Christian Formation Children s Ministry Youth Ministry These conversations were quite productive, and indeed very spirited. Our next step will be a parish-wide survey in which everyone can offer their thoughts. If you have thoughts or questions feel free to connect with our site planning team members: Joe Stultz, Betty Atwell, Jon Anderson, Craig Taylor and BJ Owens. 4 Mission Spotlight Produce to People connects Bestway Market, St. Andrews members, and neighbors Margaret and Terrance Horne (right) bring boxes of produce from Bestway Market to a friend in their neighborhood. Doreatha Harris (below right), whose strength is failing but who has lived a long life of service to others, lovingly accepts the produce. Doreatha then distributes the food among several other neighbors, effectively demonstrating that not only do we all need reminders of God s grace and goodness, but we are also all servants who are called to show God s love in concrete ways. Produce to People works through signing up online to pick up groceries either on Monday or Friday. You may Sign up for one date or many, and you can take the produce either to a food pantry that takes fresh food (not all of them do) or deliver the food directly to a household that could use it. If you don t know anyone yourself, you can talk to Margaret Horne, Debbie Dowd or Audra Abt. Please Audra Abt if you would like to participate in the online signup for this ministry. (audra.abt@standrewsgso.org). Spotlight on Greensboro s Interactive Resource Center (the IRC) The Interactive Resource Center assists people who are homeless, recently homeless or facing homelessness reconnect with their own lives and with the community at large. The people at the IRC understand that homeless is not helpless, and that with a combination of basic services and individualized attention those experiencing homelessness, those facing homelessness and those just coming out of homelessness can renew their connections with the community and ultimately restart their lives marks the 6th year that the IRC has become a busy and vibrant source of help and hope for the Greensboro community. Each day, between 180 and 200 people pull open the doors to the IRC, and step in. Our guest come for many reasons to be helped by one of our volunteers creating a resume in our computer lab, to speak with our housing coordinator, meet with a case managers, to see the nurse, to get a hair cut, or perhaps to take a shower and do a load of laundry. Beyond these services, what our guests find within these doors is a sense of community, a vibrant network of individuals, ideas, and lives. (from the IRC website) To learn more, visit the IRC s website at You may also ask Cathy Jordan and Glenn Perkins, members of St. Andrews Mission Team who are getting to know the IRC better this year so that St. Andrews may participate more in IRC s life and mission.
