1 To glorify God and love others through worship, study, and service. October 29, Years Ago James A. Cason Senior Pastor Scott Harris Associate Pastor Worship Services: Sunday School: Sanctuary: Fellowship Hall: Classrooms: 8:30AM & 11:00AM 9:01AM & 11:00AM 10:00AM We live in a culture that belittles history. If an event occurred more than 20 years ago or a hymn was written 50 years ago, both the event and the music is considered by many to be irrelevant. So what do we do with something that happened 500 years ago? Five hundred years ago on October 31, 1517, Martin Luther, a relatively unknown Catholic monk made a dramatic protest against some of the practices of the Catholic Church. He nailed what has become known as his 95 Theses to the Castle Church door in Wittenberg, Germany. This moment traditionally marks the beginning of the Reformation and the birth of the Protestant Churches. His greatest protest against the Church was the Catholic Church s corrupt practice of selling indulgences to absolve sin. His 95 Theses two main ideas were the firm belief that the Bible rather than the church is the central religious authority and that humans may obtain salvation through their faith and not their works. On Aldersgate Street in London on May 24, 1738, Wesley was listening to Martin Luther s preface to the Book of Romans and Luther s explanation of the phrase the just will live by faith. At some point, Wesley stated that he felt his heart strangely warmed and that he did trust Christ and Christ alone for his salvation. It is interesting that neither Luther or Wesley, who lived over 200 years apart, had any desire to begin a new denomination. They both were trying to bring about reform within the Catholic Church and the Church of England. Why is the Reformation and Martin Luther important for us to consider? Luther and John and Charles Wesley promoted beliefs, that even though they were considered heresy at the time, are now considered basic beliefs of the Christian faith: Priesthood of all believers - Every Christian is a minister and has direct access to God without the need for a human mediator. Translating the Bible and the liturgy into everyday language that could be understood by the people. The Bible, and not the Church, is the central religious authority. Salvation by grace through faith and not by works. Come this Sunday and hear how something that happened 500 years ago can still change lives today! 3 Youth Ministries News NO Sunday Night Surge - October 29 We will not have Sunday Night Surge due to the Harvest Festival. We will resume next week! NO Breakfast Club -October 30 There will be NO Breakfast Club due to the High School Retreat. We will resume next week! Small Groups & Confirmation- November 1 Middle and High School students meet on Wednesday nights in the Youth Room for fellowship, food, and small group Bible study. Small groups are divided by age and gender. The Youth Room opens at 5:30PM for dinner, games begin at 6:15PM, and Bible study starts at 7:00PM. The cost for dinner is $2 and students are dismissed at 8:00PM. Operation Christmas Child November 8 During Small Groups on November 8, our students will pack shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child. This is a program through Samaritan s Purse that sends shoeboxes full of gifts to children around the world that would otherwise not have any Christmas presents. They also put a Bible study in the student s language in each box they send. This is a great opportunity for us to serve others! We need your student to bring in items that night that they could pack in a shoebox. Some examples of items you can bring are: toy cars, balls, harmonicas, jump ropes, school supplies, hygiene items, t-shirts, hats, and sunglasses. Please remember no candy, no toothpaste and nothing that is breakable. Students can bring as many items as they d like, because we are going to try to fill as many shoeboxes as possible. We will provide the container for your student or they can bring their own. The shipping fee for each box is $9.
