1 David C Cook Sunday School Lesson Review Winter Quarter December 2016 & January & February 2017 The Bible-in-Life Sunday School Lesson Review is designed to help Sunday school leaders understand and maintain uniform teaching direction throughout the quarter. As a pastor you will be able to tell at a glance what the children are studying. Children s sermons, and churchtime activities can be organized so that Sunday school themes are supported throughout the entire Sunday morning experience. As a Christian education director you will be able to see the Bible Basis for each age level and the focus of each lesson. You will be able to organize opening programs, plan whole school worship services, order materials needed for activities, and plan for special programs that might be valuable for your students. The Sunday School Lesson Review makes teacher training more efficient and effective since you can see at a glance exactly what each teacher needs to know each Sunday. The Sunday school superintendent will find the Sunday School Lesson Review important for supporting teachers in their planning and preparation. Classroom arrangements, large- or small-group activities, and bulletin board ideas can be prepared ahead of time to make Sunday morning easier for your teachers. David C Cook Bible-in-Life Bible-in-Life curriculum has Unified Themes, which are assigned for each unit (units normally coincide with calendar months). This makes possible unified teacher training, lesson introduction, or review in combined assembly and home activities. A Thorough Bible Study Program for All Ages curriculum targets the unique needs of two year olds in a two-year cycle. and Early curricula use their own Unified Themes in a two-year cycle, which take into consideration the special needs of these children. classes are studying the same book or period of Bible history with age-level appropriate lessons that support the Unified Theme. These curricula are on a three-year cycle. Adult curriculum is built around the Uniform Lessons Series, which provides comprehensive and in-depth Bible study for the adult learner. Bible coverage correlation for the age levels is achieved by the fact that these age levels are studying the same book of the Bible or the same historic period throughout the three-year cycle (e.g., Paul s missionary journeys and related Pauline Epistles) except for summer topical studies. 3 Lesson 1, December 4 th Unit 16: Hello, Baby Jesus! Bible Basis: The angel told Mary about Jesus birth (Luke 1:26-38). Lesson Focus: Mary heard about baby Jesus. Bible Basis: An angel tells Mary that Jesus is coming (Luke 1:26-38). Lesson Focus: We can get ready for baby Jesus. Memory Verse: A Savior has been born. Luke 2:11 Early Bible Basis: An angel tells Mary about Jesus birth (Luke 1:26-38). Lesson Focus: An angel told Mary about God s plans. Memory Verse: A Savior has been born to you;; he is Christ the Lord. Luke 2:11 Bible Basis: God chooses Gideon to lead the Israelites against the Midianites despite his felt inadequacies (Judges 6). Lesson Focus: Real heroes follow God. Memory Verse: The Lord is my helper;; I will not be afraid. Hebrews 13:6 Upper Bible Basis: Gideon receives God s call to deliver the Israelites from the Midianites (Judges 6). Lesson Focus: Real heroes depend on God s plan. Lesson Focus: Get ready for the Savior. 4 Lesson 2, December 11 th Unit 16: Hello, Baby Jesus! Bible Basis: The angel told Joseph about Jesus birth (Matthew 1:18-24). Lesson Focus: Joseph heard about baby Jesus. Bible Basis: Jesus is born to Mary in Bethlehem (Luke 2:1-7). Lesson Focus: We are glad that Jesus is born! Memory Verse: A Savior has been born. Luke 2:11 Early Bible Basis: An angel tells Joseph that Jesus is coming (Matthew 1:18-25). Lesson Focus: Joseph showed us how to obey God. Memory Verse: A Savior has been born to you;; he is Christ the Lord. Luke 2:11 Bible Basis: God s deliverance from the Midianites through Gideon comes through unusual methods (Judges 7:1-22). Lesson Focus: God s way is the best way. Memory Verse: My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the LORD. Isaiah 55:8 Upper Bible Basis: Gideon and his 300 deliver the Israelites from oppression (Judges 7). Lesson Focus: God can use our weakness to show His power. Memory Verse: God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise;; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. 1 Corinthians 1:27 Bible Basis: A prophet and an angel tell of Jesus birth (Isaiah 7:14;; 9:1b, 6-7;; Luke 1:26-27;; Matthew 1:18-23). Lesson Focus: Expect the unexpected from God. Memory Verse: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel. 5 Lesson 3, December 18 th Unit 16: Hello, Baby Jesus! Bible Basis: Angels and shepherds celebrated Jesus birth (Luke 2:1-20). Lesson Focus: Baby Jesus was born! Bible Basis: Shepherds learn that the Savior is born (Luke 2:8-20). Lesson Focus: We thank God for sending Jesus. Memory Verse: A Savior has been born. Luke 2:11 Early Bible Basis: Jesus is born in Bethlehem (Luke 2:1-7). Lesson Focus: Joseph and Mary welcomed baby Jesus. Memory Verse: A Savior has been born to you;; he is Christ the Lord. Luke 2:11 Bible Basis: God planned ahead and sent a deliverer (Isaiah 9:6;; Micah 5:2;; Luke 1:31-33;; 2:1-7). Lesson Focus: God had a plan to send His Son. Memory Verse: When the time had fully come, God sent his Son. Galatians 4:4 Upper Bible Basis: God sends His Son as His special Deliverer (Matthew 1:18 2:12;; Luke 2:6-20). Lesson Focus: Message delivered: Jesus came to save us. Memory Verse: [The angel said,] You are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins. 6 Lesson 4, December 25 th Unit 16: Hello, Baby Jesus! Bible Basis: The Wise Men visited Jesus (Matthew 2:1-12). Lesson Focus: Wise Men came to see Jesus. Bible Basis: God provides protection for His Son, Jesus (Matthew 2:7-23). Lesson Focus: We are happy that God took care of Jesus. Memory Verse: A Savior has been born. Luke 2:11 Early Bible Basis: Angels tell the shepherds about the Savior s birth (Luke 2:8-20). Lesson Focus: We can tell others about Jesus. Memory Verse: A Savior has been born to you;; he is Christ the Lord. Luke 2:11 Bible Basis: Wise Men worship Jesus (Matthew 2:1-12). Lesson Focus: We give the gift of worship to Jesus. Memory Verse: At the name of Jesus every knee should bow,... and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. Philippians 2:10-11 Upper Bible Basis: God protects His Son from the plotting of King Herod (Matthew 2:13-23). Lesson Focus: We can depend on God in every situation. Memory Verse: If God is for us, who can be against us? Romans 8:31 Bible Basis: People from all nations will come to worship Jesus, just as the wise men did (Isaiah 49:6-7;; 60:3;; Matthew 2:1-11). Lesson Focus: All people are called to worship Jesus. Memory Verse: I will also make you a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring my salvation to the ends of the earth. Isaiah 49:6 Bible Basis: Jesus identifies Himself as the Anointed One who was to bring good news to the poor (Luke 4:14-21;; 8:1-3;; 17:15-18;; 18:35, 38, 40-43a;; 23:39-43). Lesson Focus: Jesus calls us to reach out to anyone in need. Memory Verse: The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. 7 Lesson 5, January 1 st Unit 17: God Loves Me Bible Basis: Paul talked about God s wonderful love (Romans 8:38-39). Lesson Focus: God loves me all the time. Bible Basis: John the Baptist tells people Jesus is God s Son (John 1:29-34). Lesson Focus: We can tell others that Jesus is God s Son. Memory Verse: A Savior has been born. Luke 2:11 Early Bible Basis: Wise men seek after Jesus in order to worship Him (Matthew 2:1-11). Lesson Focus: We can worship Jesus. Memory Verse: A Savior has been born to you;; he is Christ the Lord. Luke 2:11 Bible Basis: Jesus does his first miracle by turning water into wine at Cana (John 2:1-11). Lesson Focus: Jesus works in our everyday lives. Memory Verse: The people were delighted with all the wonderful things he was doing. Luke 13:17 Upper Bible Basis: Jesus feeds over 5,000. Jesus teaches He is the Bread of Life (John 6:1-13, 26-40). Lesson Focus: Jesus is able to meet all our needs. Memory Verse: Then Jesus declared, I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty. John 6:35 Bible Basis: John the Baptist proclaims who Jesus is (John 1:29-34). Lesson Focus: We can know who Jesus is. Memory Verse: He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world. 1 John 2:2. Bible Basis: Jesus deity (Hebrews 1:1-10). Lesson Focus: We can be confident that Jesus is God. Memory Verse: About the Son he says, Your throne, O God, will last forever and ever, and righteousness will be the scepter of your kingdom. Hebrews 1:8
8 Unit 17: God Loves Me Bible Basis: Jesus healed ten lepers (Luke 17:11-19). Lesson Focus: God loves me when I m thankful. Lesson 6, January 8 th Unit 17: God Made Us Bible Basis: God made the first human beings (Genesis 1:26-29, 31;; 2:7-8, 21-23). Lesson Focus: God made us. Memory Verse: The LORD is God. It is he who made us. Psalm 100:3 Early Unit 17: God Made Us Bible Basis: God made people;; the psalmist praises God for the remarkable specialness of people (Genesis 1:26-31;; Psalm 139:1-18). Lesson Focus: God made us and knows us. Memory Verse: I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Psalm 139:14 Bible Basis: Jesus drives the profit-makers out of the Jerusalem temple (John 2:12-22). Lesson Focus: Jesus shows us how to stand up for what s right. Memory Verse: Dear children, do not let anyone lead you astray. He who does what is right is righteous. 1 John 3:7 Upper Bible Basis: Jesus brings light and courage to the man born blind. Jesus teaches He is the Light of the World (John 8:12;; 9). Lesson Focus: The light of Jesus helps us to see the truth. Memory Verse: I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life. John 8:12 Bible Basis: A sinful woman anoints Jesus feet. (Luke 7:37-50) Lesson Focus: Jesus accepts us;; we can accept others. Memory Verse: Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God. 9 Lesson 7, January 15 th Unit 17: God Loves Me Bible Basis: Jesus told the disciples to have courage when they were afraid (Matthew 14:22-32). Lesson Focus: God loves me when I m scared. Unit 17: God Made Us Bible Basis: Cain and Abel are born to Adam and Eve (Genesis 3:20;; 4:1-2). Lesson Focus: God made our families. Memory Verse: The LORD is God. It is he who made us. Psalm 100:3 Early Unit 17: God Made Us Bible Basis: From the beginning, God gave people different skills and talents (Genesis 2:15-17;; 3:1-6, 17-18;; 4:1-2, 20-22). Lesson Focus: God has a job for each of us. Memory Verse: I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Psalm 139:14 Bible Basis: Jesus heals a man at the Pool of Bethesda and defends His action (John 5). Lesson Focus: Jesus shows us that helping others really matters. Memory Verse: Do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased. Hebrews 13:16 Upper Bible Basis: Philip brings Nathanael to Jesus and Jesus already knows about Nathanael. Jesus teaches He is the Good Shepherd (John 1:43-49;; 10:11-14). Lesson Focus: Jesus knows and cares for us. Memory Verse: I am the good shepherd;; I know my sheep and my sheep know me. John 10:14 Bible Basis: The Pharisees challenge Jesus identity (John 8:21-29, 48-59). Lesson Focus: Jesus is greater than our expectations. Lesson Focus: Because Jesus is on our side, we can approach God. 10 Lesson 8, January 22 nd Unit 17: God Loves Me Bible Basis: God gave Hannah a son (1 Samuel 1:1-20). Lesson Focus: God loves me when I m sad. Unit 17: God Made Us Bible Basis: God made the human body (Genesis 1:27;; 2:7;; 3:20;; 4:1-2;; Psalm 139:1-6, 13-18). Lesson Focus: God made our bodies. Memory Verse: The LORD is God. It is he who made us. Psalm 100:3 Early Unit 17: God Made Us Bible Basis: Jacob and Esau are born with differences (Genesis 25:20-28). Lesson Focus: God made each of us different. Memory Verse: I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Psalm 139:14 Bible Basis: Jesus raises the dead daughter of Jairus, a ruler of the synagogue (Luke 8:41-42, 49-56). Lesson Focus: We can come to Jesus with our biggest problems. Memory Verse: Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28 Upper Bible Basis: Jesus raises Lazarus from the dead. Jesus teaches He is the Resurrection and the Life (John 11:1-44). Lesson Focus: Jesus has absolute power over death. Memory Verse: I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies. John 11:25 Bible Basis: Jesus taught the crowd, and healed a leper (Matthew 14:14;; Mark 1:40-45;; 6:30-34). Lesson Focus: Take time to be compassionate. Memory Verse: Live in harmony with one another;; be sympathetic, love as brothers, be compassionate and humble. 1 Peter 3:8 Bible Basis: Jesus sacrifice (Hebrews 9:11-15;; 10:1-12). Lesson Focus: Because of Jesus sacrifice, we are made holy. Memory Verse:We have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. Hebrews 10:10b.
11 Lesson 9, January 29 th Unit 17: God Loves Me Bible Basis: Jesus talked with Zacchaeus (Luke 19:1-6). Lesson Focus: I m happy because God loves me. Unit 17: God Made Us Bible Basis: God made us with ears that hear and eyes that see (Genesis 1:27;; 3:20;; 4:1-2;; Job 34:3;; 42:5;; Matthew 11:15;; Job 20:9a;; Proverbs 20:12). Lesson Focus: God made our senses. Memory Verse: The LORD is God. It is he who made us. Psalm 100:3 Early Unit 17: God Made Us Bible Basis: Jacob and Esau are brought together after conflict (Genesis 27:1 28:4;; 32:3-21;; 33:1-11). Lesson Focus: God wants us to get along with others. Memory Verse: I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Psalm 139:14 Bible Basis: Jesus is transfigured and talks about His coming death (Matthew 17:1-13). Lesson Focus: We can believe that Jesus is God s Son. Memory Verse: A voice from the cloud said, This is my Son, whom I love;; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him! Matthew 17:5 Upper Bible Basis: Jesus teaches that He is the Vine who enables His followers to bear fruit (John 15:1-8;; Galatians 5:22-23). Lesson Focus: Jesus wants us to stay connected to Him. Memory Verse: I am the vine;; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit. John 15:5 Bible Basis: James and John ask to be the greatest in Jesus kingdom (Mark 10:35-45). Lesson Focus: Jesus defined greatness as serving others. Memory Verse: For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. Mark 10:45 Bible Basis: Jesus as Savior and guide (Hebrews 2:9-10;; 12:1-3). Lesson Focus: Focusing on Jesus gives us strength and courage. Memory Verse: Let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. 12 Lesson 10, February 5 th Unit 18: What Did Jesus Do? Bible Basis: Jesus prayed alone (Mark 1:35;; Luke 6:12). Lesson Focus: Jesus prayed to God. Unit 18: We Worship God Together Bible Basis: Solomon leads the people in prayer (1 Kings 8). Lesson Focus: We can pray together. Memory Verse: Worship the LORD. Psalm 96:9 Early Unit 18: We Worship God Together Bible Basis: Joash and the people bring their offerings to God (2 Chronicles 24:1-14). Lesson Focus: We worship God by giving gladly. Memory Verse: Worship the LORD with gladness;; come before him with joyful songs. Psalm 100:2 Bible Basis: Jesus tells a story about a servant who would not forgive his friend after his master forgave him (Matthew 18:21-35). Lesson Focus: Jesus tells us to forgive over and over. Memory Verse: Forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us. Luke 11:4 Upper Bible Basis: Jesus tells a parable about a wise man who built upon a firm foundation, and a foolish man who did not (Matthew 7:24-27). Lesson Focus: Don t just listen to the Word;; do what it says. Memory Verse: Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. James 1:22 Bible Basis: Jesus tells the parable of the workers in the vineyard (Matthew 20:1-16). Lesson Focus: Comparisons can lead to discontent. Memory Verse: And my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:19 Bible Basis: Jesus teaches His disciples that the Holy Spirit is their Counselor (John 14:16-17, 25-26;; 16:12-15). Lesson Focus: We can count on the Holy Spirit to guide us. Memory Verse: But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own;; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. John 16:13.
13 Lesson 11, February 12 th Unit 18: What Did Jesus Do? Bible Basis: Jesus and His disciples rested (Mark 6:30-32). Lesson Focus: Jesus rested. Unit 18: We Worship God Together Bible Basis: Hezekiah and the congregation worship with music (2 Chronicles 29:25-31). Lesson Focus: We can make music together. Memory Verse: Worship the LORD. Psalm 96:9 Early Unit 18: We Worship God Together Bible Basis: Ezra reads God s Word to the people (Nehemiah 8:1-6). Lesson Focus: We worship God by reading and listening to His Word. Memory Verse: Worship the LORD with gladness;; come before him with joyful songs. Psalm 100:2 Bible Basis: Jesus tells a story about a son who worked when he said he wouldn t, and another son who said he would work but didn t (Matthew 21:28-32). Lesson Focus: We love God in what we say and do. Memory Verse: Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth. 1 John 3:18 Upper Bible Basis: Jesus tells the story of a master who leaves his servants to look out for his property (Matthew 25:14-29). Lesson Focus: We all have abilities to use for God. Memory Verse: There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. 1 Corinthians 12:5 Bible Basis: Jesus tells the parable of the great banquet (Luke 14:15-24). Lesson Focus: God invites all kinds of people to His party. Memory Verse: Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28 Bible Basis: Jesus teaches His disciples that the requirement for fruitfulness is abiding in Him (John 15:1-8). Lesson Focus: Stay rooted in Christ. Memory Verse: Remain in me, and I will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself;; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. John 15:4
14 Lesson 12, February 19 th Unit 18: What Did Jesus Do? Bible Basis: Jesus cried with sadness for His friends (John 11:32-35). Lesson Focus: Jesus cried. Unit 18: We Worship God Together Bible Basis: A widow gives all she has (Mark 12:41-44). Lesson Focus: We can all give to God. Memory Verse: Worship the LORD. Psalm 96:9 Early Unit 18: We Worship God Together Bible Basis: Solomon leads the people in prayer at the temple (1 Kings 8). Lesson Focus: We worship God by praying. Memory Verse: Worship the LORD with gladness;; come before him with joyful songs. Psalm 100:2 Bible Basis: Jesus tells a story about taking the best seat at a dinner party (Luke 14:7-11). Lesson Focus: Don t always take the best for yourself. Memory Verse: Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. Philippians 2:4 Upper Bible Basis: Jesus tells the story of the sheep and the goats (Matthew 25:31-46). Lesson Focus: We need to show love to those who seem least important. Memory Verse: I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me. Matthew 25:40 Bible Basis: Jesus tells the parable of the talents (Matthew 25:14-30). Lesson Focus: Make the most of God s gifts. Memory Verse: Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God's grace in various forms. 1 Peter 4:10 Bible Basis: Jesus teaches His disciples that they will face opposition from the world (John 16:1-3, 20-22, 32-33). Lesson Focus: Following Jesus isn t always easy. Bible Verse: Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 1 John 2:15
