The Chimes June 2012 Other than the ETC Spring Fundraiser on June 23 rd (see page 4 for more information-rsvp s are due NOW), June looks to be a pretty quiet month for the church. We ll have worship and Sunday school as usual. This might be a good time for those who have thought about starting something new to do just that. Anyone who would like to can join the prayer group that meets most Tuesday morning at Bill and Nancy Brush s house. This is a time for sharing and for prayers. It s been great for all who have participated in the past. The Session has decided not to meet in June but to use this time to work on our long terms plans in the area of our facilities, also mission and Christian Education. We re doing well as a congregation and this is a great time to look down the line at what the needs of the church are and may be. The biggest thing going on within our Presbyterian Church (.U.S.A.) family is the biannual meeting of our General Assembly. The General Assembly will convene on June 30 th and meet through July 7 th. They ll have a lot of business before them and as usual, some of it will make the papers and some of it will not. If you are interested in what is going on before and during the General Assembly, here is the official website for this meeting of the General Assembly - section/ga/ga220/. If you have questions as to actions taken by the General Assembly, please do not hesitate to give me a call at the office or home, or you can drop me an at pastordennis@mchsi.com. Following the meeting of the General Assembly we might schedule an afternoon meeting in July to visit about the decisions made during the meeting and how different matters will be handled by the larger church. Since the General Assembly does not meet until the end of June, now is a great time to start praying for all the General Assembly staff, the commissioners, chairs of the different committees and the different committees. Following are some of the people you might want to begin praying for: Gradye Parsons; Stated Clerk of the General Assembly who is up for reelection to this position. The Candidates for Moderator: Robert Austell, Charlotte, NC; Randy Branson, Graham, TX; Janet Edwards, Pittsburgh. PA; Susan Krummel, Peoria, IL and Neal Presa, Middlesex, NJ. The Commissioners from John Calvin Presbytery, our local presbytery Teaching Elder Commissioner; The Rev. Becky Schwandt; Ruling Elder Commissioner; Bill Budnick (elder at 1 st Branson) and Brandt Shields, Young Adult Advisory Delegate from Southminster Presbyterian Church, Springfield. (By the way he may be nominated to be Co-Moderator of the YAAD s.) Please keep these and all staff and commissioners in your prayers. During these lazy days of summer may we sense all God s blessings of life and enjoy being part of Community Presbyterian Church and part of Forsyth, Missouri. Blessings, Dennis C O M M U N I T Y P R E S B Y T E R I A N C H U R C H R e f l e c t i o n s F r o m P a s t o r D e n n i s
STATED SESSION MEETING DIGEST Thursday, May 17, 2012 Moderator Dennis Winzenried opened the meeting with devotionals from Luke 24:45-51 and Acts 1:1-11; Jesus Ascension and with prayer. Elders reviewed the goals for Primary Increase recognition in the community of our efforts to improve the quality of life in, for and with the community of Forsyth. Secondary Develop long-term plans to maintain the church s assets. To move forward on developing 5 year plans for all areas of the church s life. One idea would be to always take photos of activities that go on in the church so they could be put on the church s web-site and/or in the local newspaper. Pastor Dennis thanked the elders for their part in the Pastor s 10 Year Celebration event. It was greatly appreciated by him and his family. It was a fun day with 132 in attendance to help Pastor Dennis celebrate and be guests for dinner. Pastor Dennis then reviewed his vacation plans with the elders and his different activities within the congregation and community. Something new in this area is being asked to serve as chaplain to the Reed s spring Civil Air Patrol Squadron that meets on Thursday evenings (this will not interfere with session meetings) and be on call when needed. He is exploring this possibility. Pastor Dennis and Elder Gretchen Keith attended the stated Presbytery meeting at Mount Zion Presbyterian Church, Willard, MO, May 17, 2012 and reported to the session the outcome of the meeting. Some of the highlights of the meeting were receiving new members as pastors to churches in the presbytery and hearing about the work of a sub-committee of the Committee on Ministry; Healthy Congregations. The elders received the financial reports from Treasurer Elder Clayton Cooper. The session expressed their appreciation for Clayton and church secretary Denise Carr s work in maintaining the financial books in a proper and efficient manner. See the financial report included in the June Newsletter. The elders noted the work being accomplished in the area of disaster preparedness. Progress is being made but there is more to be done. Plans are to have a disaster preparedness Sunday, but the date has not yet been set. During the summer months the session will take June and August off, focusing upon making progress on long range planning. We will have a meeting in July to take care of needed business. Elders approved the running of the radio ad for the church 5 times on Friday for the next 13 weeks. Our next mission project remembering fathers in the nursing home by giving each a funny tie and encouraging them to tie one on. Cindy Werner is working up the cards and collecting ties to be handed out on Saturday prior to Father s Day. The mission trip to St Joseph will be July 29-August 5 to work on a home. This will be in conjunction with Ozark Presbyterian Church. Elder Ralph Taylor has scheduled to attend. Elder Pat Knudtson reported that cards were sent to our service men and women and to members of the congregation in the care center and the homebound. Pastor Dennis requested that Sylvia Merrick be added to their list since she no longer drives. It was reported that the two adult Sunday schools are going well. A Read the Bible through in 90-days is being planned for the fall. Gerri reported ETC will be having their planned activity on June 23 rd. It is a baseball, sports event theme. Communion served on Sunday, May 6 th 76 people in attendance and 72 served. Communion will next be served Sunday, June 3 rd and Sunday, July 1 st. The window replacement project is now completed. The session wishes to take this opportunity to thank in writing Ed Hawkins and crew for all of their time and talent in seeing that this project needed to be done and was completed in a timely and dutiful manner. Very professional men who willingly work in the Lord s house to help maintain its beauty inside and out. The privacy blinds were ordered for the kitchen serving area. They should be installed later this month or early June. The next stated meeting of the session will be Thursday July 19, 2012 at 6:30 pm at the church. 2
Benevolence Fund Report: During May we helped 7 families: 3 were helped with rent, 2 with transportation, 1 with an electric bill, and 1 with a school registration to help someone further their education to hopefully find a better paying job. We also received a generous grant from the Slusher foundation this month! If you would like to make a donation to the Benevolent Fund, please do so by marking your check special gift - benevolent fund. Those who receive our assistance greatly appreciate your gifts! If you have Community Cash you d like to donate, please turn them in to the office by Tuesday, June 12 th, so we can get them mailed before they expire. Thank you! 3
Echoes from the Choir Loft The choir has been studying, yes studying, music theory. We were tested on our extensive knowledge of the notes on the Treble and Bass Clefs. We all did very well. Next week, we begin learning note counts and rests. We are really good at resting already, so that should be a snap for us. Mother's Day we sang a new anthem, which we had only practiced once. As does happen, God took over and it went very well. We have to remember to trust in Him when we sing. We are working on a beautiful new piece for a future Sunday too. It isn't all work and study in the choir loft. We had a wonderful dinner party with our gourmet meal prepared by Master Chef, Lee Click. We also took a drive over to Branson to see Jerusalem performed by DuDu Fisher. Now you may think the choir is full, but with summer vacations coming up we could always use more voices. If you like to make a joyful noise, join us on Wednesday nights and Sunday mornings. There is always room for more. Remember, Our Father likes to hear us Sing His Praises. TAKE ME OUT TO THE BALL GAME! ETC s spring fundraiser is on Saturday, June 23 rd, 6:30 pm. Wear your favorite team colors and/or apparel and come prepared to have fun! Cost is $10. per person Reservations are required; however, you can pay at the door. We ll have picnic food and a live auction. Auction items are needed and they can be dropped off at the office anytime, right up until the event. Call Denise NOW at to reserve your spot at the event and join us! We are as American as Baseball, Hot Dogs and Apple Pie! 4
Right now I am in Danville, CA attending a Presbytery Leadership Formation conference at a Franciscan retreat center. The setting is peaceful and the conference is informative and will help equip me to be a better leader for JCP. It is amazing all the things that we have to deal with as Mid Council leaders. I pray that this experience will enrich the Presbytery as much as it is enriching me. Thank you for this opportunity to learn because it is your shared mission dollars that make this possible. You are investing in the future of JCP as you give to shared mission in ways that you may never know. Shared mission in JCP is one of the ways that each church can make a difference in our area. Shared mission dollars touch lives through the Mission and Nurture Committee and their work with camps, peacemaking, Presbytery events and what has come to be known as the Knowledge Bank. Share mission dollars also touch lives through an emergency fund for pastors, Creative Ministries Grants, PDA, and a number of other outreach projects. Our shared mission dollars touch the lives of many people and I encourage you to make shared mission an important part of who you are as a Presbyterian church in JCP. Again, I say thanks to each and every one of you who have made it possible for JCP to reach out and make a difference in my life and in the lives of all who receive the benefits from your generosity. Susan Rosenbaum 2012 Mission Trip To St. Joseph, MO Presented by Ozark Presbyterian Church And Forsyth Community Presbyterian Church July 29 th August 4 th, 2012 This year we will be working with InterServ which is a community service group located in St. Joseph, MO and a spin off of Presbyterian Mid America Synod s Opportunities for Missions. Our contact will be Randy Sharp who is the Associate Director of Operations. Through the sharing of God s love, we seek out and assist those in need, so that all may live their lives more fully and more capably (InterServ s Mission Statement) 5
Forsyth Elementary School Announced as National Winner of Promising Practices in Character Education for 2012 On April 26 th, 48 mentors, school personnel, Silver Dollar City staff, and some of the pastors of the 8 churches involved with the Panther Partners Mentor Program gathered at our church for a celebration of the past year of mentoring. This was our 5 th year! There were 64 mentors this year and 19 of those were first year mentors. We have 6 couples who are mentors. And, proudly, there are 22 mentors from Community Presbyterian Church, with 4 serving on the mentor planning committee for the past 5 years (Pastor Dennis, Gretchen Keith, Pat Seals, and Jeanne Legge). After eating lasagna and visiting, mentors and teachers shared wonderful, and sometimes amusing, experiences of this past year. It was an up-lifting and inspiring evening! This fall we will have 6 mentors seeing 6 th graders, our first year to mentor that aged student, and 12 mentors graduating to 5 th grade with their students. Kindergarten teachers are selecting 20 children they believe could benefit from a one-onone relationship with a caring adult and they will be paired with a mentor this fall. 1 Student + 1 Mentor = 2 Lives, Changed Forever this sums up the goal of the Panther Partners Mentor Program. 6 Washington, DC The Character Education Partnership (CEP) has recognized Forsyth Elementary School as a 2012 Promising Practice winner for their Panther Partners Mentoring practice. CEP awarded 297 Promising Practices to schools, districts, and organizations from across the United States, as well as from Brazil, Canada, Hong Kong, and Mexico. This mentoring partnership model originated in Jefferson City, MO with the First Christian Church; it was implemented at East Elementary School whose principal was Marcella Jordan. The model information was brought to Forsyth by Jeanne Legge, the Panther Partners community liaison. It was introduced in the elementary school in 2007 and has grown into an integral part of the school community. It is a true community effort with Silver Dollar City Foundation and 8 area churches (Community Presbyterian, United Methodist, First Baptist, Forsyth Christian, Shepherd of the Lakes Lutheran, Branson East Seventh Day Adventist, Our Lady of the Ozarks Catholic, and Forsyth Church of Christ) partnering with the school to benefit students. Panther Partners started with two churches and 20 mentors. In there will be approximately 80 mentors serving first grade through 6 th grade students. Some of these children and mentors have been together since the beginning of the program. The purpose is to provide a learning experience where community service is modeled and practiced. It compliments what is learned in the classroom as well as provides a relationship that supports and enriches the students experience. Students are selected by school staff and mentors are assigned based on information supplied by classroom teachers. These students and mentors meet weekly during the school year and continue to communicate over the summer. Some mentors and students take outings over the summer. Carol Hawkins, Forsyth Elementary principal stated, It is an honor to have been selected as a national winner in the Promising Practices program! This recognition for our mentoring program reinforces what we already knew, it is working and is extremely valuable in the lives of our students. These practices showcase so many creative and unique ways of dealing with challenges educators face each day said Lisa Greeves, Manager of the Promising Practices program. CEP is proud to recognize these educators and to give them an international platform upon which to share their hard work. CEP will honor the 2012 recipients at the 19th National Forum on Character Education, to be held in Washington, DC, November 1 3.
REMEMBERING MOM'S CLOTHESLINE We had a long wooden pole (clothes pole) that was used to push the clotheslines up so that longer items (sheets/pants/etc.) didn't brush the ground and get dirty. You have to be a "certain age" to appreciate this one... I can hear my mother now... THE BASIC RULES FOR CLOTHESLINES: (If you don't even know what clotheslines are, better skip this.) 1. You had to hang the socks by the toes... NOT the top. 2. You hung pants by the BOTTOM/cuffs... NOT the waistbands. 3. You had to WASH the clothesline(s) before hanging any clothes - walk the entire length of each line with a damp cloth around the lines. 4. You had to hang the clothes in a certain order, and always hang "whites" with "whites," and hang them first. 5. You NEVER hung a shirt by the shoulders - always by the tail! What would the neighbors think? 6. Wash day on a Monday! NEVER hang clothes on the weekend, or on Sunday, for Heaven's sake! 7. Hang the sheets and towels on the OUTSIDE lines so you could hide your "unmentionables" in the middle (perverts & busybodies, y'know!) 8. It didn't matter if it was sub-zero weather... clothes would "freeze-dry." 9. ALWAYS gather the clothes pins when taking down dry clothes! Pins left on the lines were "tacky"! 10. If you were efficient, you would line the clothes up so that each item did not need two clothes pins, but shared one of the clothes pins with the next washed item. 11. Clothes off of the line before dinner time, neatly folded in the clothes basket, and ready to be ironed. 12. IRONED???!! Well, that's a whole OTHER subject! And now a POEM... Submitted by Gretchen Keith A clothesline was a news forecast, To neighbors passing by, There were no secrets you could keep, When clothes were hung to dry. It also was a friendly link, For neighbors always knew If company had stopped on by, To spend a night or two. For then you'd see the "fancy sheets", And towels upon the line; You'd see the "company table cloths", With intricate designs. The line announced a baby's birth, From folks who lived inside, As brand new infant clothes were hung, So carefully with pride! The ages of the children could, So readily be known By watching how the sizes changed, You'd know how much they'd grown! It also told when illness struck, As extra sheets were hung; Then nightclothes, and a bathrobe too, Haphazardly were strung. It also said, "On vacation now", When lines hung limp and bare. It told, "We're back!" when full lines sagged, With not an inch to spare! New folks in town were scorned upon, If wash was dingy and gray, As neighbors carefully raised their brows, And looked the other way. But clotheslines now are of the past, For dryers make work much less. Now what goes on inside a home, Is anybody's guess! Neighbors knew each other best... By what hung out on that line. 7

On Sundays in June (3rd, 10th, 24th and 30th) the concerts will be held in Shadow Rock Park starting at 5:00 and 8:00 pm. To Our Church Family: Thank You for the verbal and written condolences at the death of my mother, Glenna Tucker. A special Thank You to Pastor Dennis for making the drive to Rolla, MO for the funeral. Instead of saying "In Memory Of..."on her funeral bulletin, we put In Celebration of the Life of Glenna Tucker." We chose to do that because mom had a very long and eventful life, 94 years young. She outlived her 4 siblings and lots of her lifelong friends. She has 4 children, 13 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. She took care of all our babies as well as all of the greatgrandchildren when they were born. It was a blessing that she suffered no pain at the end and simply stopped breathing in her sleep. Hospice is awesome! Angels on earth! My entire family is grateful she is now at peace and in heaven dancing on healthy legs with our dad and her heavenly Father. Moss and I appreciate all of your prayers on our behalf every Sunday. We miss and love all of you! See you in June! Mary Prewitt 10
