The Chimes October 2011 C O M M U N I T Y P R E S B Y T E R I A N C H U R C H R e f l e c t i o n s F r o m P a s t o r D e n n i s In Ecclesiastes 3 we hear; For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted; While away on vacation in Colorado, I learned that a large limb had fallen out of the Oak tree in front of the sanctuary. Ed Hawkins had recently cut off several dead limbs; the one that fell looked as if it was full of life. Problem is the tree is dying slowly from the inside. The session is going to have to address this matter, before someone gets hurt. Glad no one has, but someone could be if we don t take drastic measures. One day, that tree came to life, on another day it will have to be cut down. The elders will be addressing this matter very, very soon. The other matter the elders have addressed recently is needed repairs to our sanctuary windows. The Sanctuary is now a little over 61 years old. Over the years the window frames have been painted. What we ve discovered is that some of the window sills and wood around the windows needs to be replaced and stained glass windows re-glazed. It will cost approximately $900 per window. Not a bad price, given the windows are taken out, repairs made and windows cleaned and reinstalled. When blessed with a nice home, it s important to keep up with the needed repairs. The Church, God s House, is no different. Over the next couple of months these things will be addressed as will others. Special contributions, contributions above your regular gift to the church, are always appreciated. If you want to pay for repairs to one window in memory of a loved one, simply let us know that is what you are doing and we ll note the gift and apply the funds to the window refurbishing project. Two special events will take place this month. The first is World Communion Sunday on October 2 nd. This is when the sacrament of Holy Communion is celebrated by sister congregations around the world. Christians from East to West and North to South will feast together as the sacrament is shared in their local congregations. Then on October 9 th, a potluck dinner is being held to welcome all the new members of our church. We ll celebrate those who have joined the church in 2010 and All members are encouraged to attend as we celebrate all who have joined us recently, and call Community Presbyterian Church their church home. I began by pointing out how in Ecclesiastes we are reminded that there is a time for every matter under heaven. As the church building needs special attention at this time, so too do we need to give special attention to our spiritual lives. God has given us life, so that we might love and enjoy Him and all the gifts He pours out upon us. May we take time to pray, read His word, worship Him not only on Sunday but throughout the week, and enjoy being in fellowship with one another. As we do these things, we ll be strengthened and continue to serve and glorify God through all we think, say and do. Fall blessings upon us all, Dennis

SESSION DIGEST September 15, 2011 The monthly stated meeting of the session of Community Presbyterian Church, Forsyth, Missouri was held Thursday, September 15, 2011 in the church s Hospitality Room. Moderator Dennis Winzenried opened the meeting with devotionals from Matthew 11:28-30, followed by discussion of how our own personal wounds becomes points of ministry with others. Some of the thoughts came from Henry Nouwen s book; The Wounded Healer. PASTOR S REPORT Pastor Dennis requested that he be allowed to modify his weekly schedule due to the needs of his extended family. Instead of always taking Friday as his day off, he may use his day off other days of the week. The elders acted to remove Nora Slusher and Nina Huddleson from the church rolls, because of their being enrolled now in heaven s roll. Pastor Dennis and Ruling Elder Gerri DeBres reported on the recent meeting of presbytery, held in Pittsburg, Kansas on September 12, The following items were discussed: Election of The Rev. Susan Rosenbaum as Pastoral Presbyter. She will begin on October 1, The Rev. Landon Whitsitt, newly installed Synod Executive and present vice-moderator of the General Assembly, was present. With Joe Hall (son of Esther Hall) at the helm as Treasurer, Financial Policies for the Presbytery were adopted and finances reviewed. Elected and installed members to Presbytery committees. Phyllis Winzenried was elected to chair the 2012 Mission and Nurture Committee. Elders reviewed the financial reports from the Treasurer, see a summary in this newsletter. Under New Business: Consecration Sunday Consecration Sunday will be on November 13, with Pastor Dennis preaching. Jack Kinkade will head the campaign, and members from Ozark Presbyterian Church will prepare and serve the meal. On October 23, 2011, members from CPC will prepare and serve for Ozark Presbyterian Church s Consecration Sunday meal. Other Activities Members of CPC are invited to attend a potluck at Ozark Presbyterian Church on Sunday evening, October 9, to hear Arda Agharazian, an Armenian Christian and international peacemaker from Jerusalem, speak. (See below for more details.) Building and Grounds (Sam Gailey; Howard Gathman; Ralph Taylor) The previously-approved repairs to the front of the church, including replacement of vents on the west side, repair of the sills and trim for two of the stained glass windows, power washing of the stone, trim, and steeple, and repainting of steeple and trim, is in process by Ed Hawkins. In addition, he has trimmed the tree in front, and discovered that the sills and trim of the remaining stained glass windows are rotting and in need of repair. On a motion by Ralph Taylor, seconded by Jim Berry, the Building and Grounds committee will negotiate with Ed Hawkins for an hourly rate, plus cost of materials and equipment rentals, for repair of the windows and the tree trimming. The elders met on Sunday, September 18 th, during worship and acted to receive Linda Reynolds as an active member of the church. NEXT MEETING The next stated meeting of the session will be Thursday, October 20, 2011, at 6:30 p.m. at the church. Potluck Invitation to Ozark Presbyterian Sunday evening, October 9th at 5:30pm Ozark Presbyterian Church is inviting us to join them at a potluck to meet and hear Arda Aghazarian, Israel/Palestine International Peacemaker of the Presbyterian Church (USA). Her presentation should be very informative and the fellowship will be great. Let the church office know if you plan on attending and we can work on carpooling rides to Ozark. 2

Benevolence Fund Report: During September, we helped 6 families: 3 with transportation issues, 1 with rent and 2 with utilities. We also received several donations: 1 from a Forsyth business and some in memory of Dave Seals. If you would like to make a donation to the Benevolent Fund, please do so by marking your check special gift - benevolent fund. Those who receive our assistance greatly appreciate your gifts! Pumpkin trivia Using pumpkins as lanterns at Halloween is based on an ancient Celtic custom brought to America by European immigrants. The carving of jack-o'-lanterns originated from the tradition of carving the faces of lost souls into hollowed out pumpkins and turnips. A candle was placed inside the carvings making the faces glow. The Halloween lanterns were placed on doorsteps to ward off evil spirits. 3

New Directory Update: Please make the following change in your church directory: Pat Seals phone is working again! Her number has been changed back to so please note your directory accordingly. Diabetes Focus Group The next meeting of this group will be on Monday, October 3 rd at 10:00 AM. At present this will be an open meeting to discuss progress, organization, and growth. Please plan to attend if you are living with diabetes or care for someone who does. Panther Partners Mentor Program On Thursday, Sept. 22nd, twenty-five 3rd and 4th graders were taken by bus from Forsyth Elementary to the Boys' and Girls' Club for a kick-off celebration of the Panther Partners Mentor Program. They were joined by their mentors for lunch of Happy Meals provided by McDonald's and songs and games led by Tom Richards and Lyla Girth. On Friday, Sept. 23rd, twenty-nine 1st and 2nd graders participated in the kick-off, many of them meeting their mentors for the first time. Everyone had fun and an opportunity to get better acquainted. Special thanks to McDonald's for providing the children's lunch, to the Boys' and Girls' Club, to Forsyth Elementary for their continued support of this program, and to Jack Kinkade for picking up the meals from McDonald's. October 2, 2011 On October 2 nd the famous, infamous and those of us in between will gather at a common table. This is the Sunday when Christian faith celebrates World Communion Sunday. We come to the table from the North and South, the East and West. It is a great privilege to share this meal. There is no cost to us. We just have to drop in. While there is no cost to us, the cross is a sign that reminds us of the great cost to the host. Centenary United Methodist Church St. Louis, MO Growing big pumpkins is a big-time and serious hobby. Top prize money for the biggest giant pumpkin is as much as $25,000 dollars at fall festivals. The world's heaviest pumpkin was grown by Chris Stevens (USA) and was recorded on October 9, 2010 weighing 1,810.5 lbs. (source: Guinness World Records) (That's a lot of pumpkin pies!). 4

Small Group Study Vera Hardin will be leading the second small group study of the book The Lord is My Shepherd: Healing Wisdom of the Twenty-third Psalm by Harold Kushner. The study starts Wednesday, October 5th, at 10 a.m. at the church and all are welcome to attend. Dates of the study will be Oct. 5, 12, 19, 26, Nov. 2, 9, 30, and Dec. 7. You re welcome to join in and invite your friends, whether they are Presbyterian or not! Of all canned fruits and vegetables, pumpkin is the best source of vitamin A. Just a half-cup of the orange stuff has more than three times the recommended daily requirement! 90% of the pumpkin is made up of water. 5

Getting a Facelift There s been lots of activity around the outside of the church recently. If you haven t noticed, there is some much needed maintenance going on. Ed Hawkins has been hard at work power washing the stone, painting eaves, window frames and even the steeple on the sanctuary. Many of you did notice when some of the stained glass windows had been removed. Ed s been making repairs to the window casings and frames and then re-glazing the windows before re-installing them. We really appreciate Ed s hard work and many hours invested in these repairs. Thanks also to the supervision of Sam Gailey. He can be found most days overseeing the work! 6

Dear Friends, I am walking in the Branson Walk to End Alzheimer s on Saturday, October 15th, to raise money for the fight again Alzheimer's disease. The proceeds from the Walk to End Alzheimer s will be used to provide support, education and advocacy to over 22,000 families throughout Southwest Missouri who face this devastating disease. Today, nearly 5.4 million Americans have Alzheimer s disease and this number is expected to grow to more than 16 million by the year For most of them, the process that will destroy their memories, their lives, and their savings has already begun. The annual cost of Alzheimer s disease will soar to at least $375 billion, overwhelming our health care systems and bankrupting Medicare and Medicaid. As one of the top fundraisers for the Branson Walk to End Alzheimer s, I am ready to make a difference, but I cannot do it without the help of people like you. I hope you will consider supporting my efforts on behalf of the Alzheimer s Association, Southwest Missouri Chapter. Please know your generosity is greatly appreciated. Checks should be made payable to the Alzheimer s Association. All donations for the Walk to End Alzheimer s are tax deductible as charitable contributions. Thank you in advance for your support. Best regards, Gladys Haltom **For your convenience, donations will be accepted at worship on Sunday, October 9th. Please visit for more information about the walk.
