The Chimes May 2012 C O M M U N I T Y P R E S B Y T E R I A N C H U R C H R e f l e c t i o n s F r o m P a s t o r D e n n i s Wow! What a celebration and what a surprise! You all can really keep a secret. I ve never been hijacked, but that is just what happened to the worship service on the 29 th. You all had it well planned out. Having my whole family here made it extra special, including Phyllis in the sermon time was wonderful (even though she told some stories that I wish hadn t been told) but oh well. Then having everyone in attendance 131, that s a record number at least in my time as pastor. Wonderful day. There is no way in this limited space to list everyone who made it special. So, simply know that I am very, very, very grateful for the surprise, for the gifts, and for you each and every one of you. You are all special to me and make this a wonderful place to serve the risen Lord. The three scrapbooks will be in the hospitality room in the very near future for you all to enjoy as I am as I look at the different pictures and scrap book pages. A lot of time was put into pulling this whole surprise together and somehow I kept getting in the way on the Friday before, the Saturday work day, and other occasions. Thank you. Thank you! Thank you!! The Pastor s corner I had put together included the following, and I would be remiss if I wouldn t thank those who have helped make my pastorate such a blessing to me and many others. So, I want to take this opportunity to give thanks for how Bertha truly helped birth me into the position of pastor of Community Presbyterian Church. She took me under her wings and helped me learn the ropes of being pastor of the church. One of her gifts was proofing the bulletin, newsletter and other church communications. She was excellent at this. In her 25+ years as church secretary she truly helped make this a wonderful place to serve our risen Lord. For a while, Nancy Brush, served alongside Bertha in the church office and then Denise Carr took on the position of keeping track of my schedule and all the activities at the church. Each has brought their particular gifts and has truly helped make Community Presbyterian Church shine within our community. Denise reminded me of a day, she and Nancy were looking for a disk related to our copy machine. They couldn t find it anywhere in their office. So they called Bertha, figuring she d know where it was. She did. She said she d given it to Dennis and he d put it away. They said, O no! It s in the black hole. They did eventually find it. This cartoon that Bertha saved speaks to that very event. I give thanks for the great administrative assistants I ve had over the years, and have now. Please let Denise know how much we appreciate her working in the church office. In closing I want to thank all who helped make the workday such a huge success. We got a lot accomplished within just a few hours. Also, thanks to Ed Hawkins, Ralph Taylor and Charles Baker for finishing up our window s project. All the new windows are installed and helping us save money on our utilities and letting in a lot of sunshine. Many blessings upon us all- Pastor Dennis

Session Digest Stated Session Meeting Thursday, April 19, 2012 Moderator Dennis Winzenried opened the meeting with devotionals from Luke 24:13-35, followed by prayer. Minutes of the stated meeting of the Session for March 14 th, 2012, called meeting of the Session for April 1, 2012, and the called Congregational and Corporate meetings were approved as corrected. GOALS FOR 2012 Primary Increase recognition in the community of our efforts to improve quality of life in, for, and with the community of Forsyth. Secondary Develop long-term plans to maintain the church assets. Building and grounds have begun the plan, but it is also necessary to review future needs of the church, i.e. using the church s website and other internet and technological avenues to bring the church to the people. As the church grows, the duties and responsibilities of the pastor will also need to be addressed. PASTOR S REPORT Communion to Homebound: April 2, 2012 Truman Persinger, John & Bertha Smith, Freida Staake, Bea Githens, and Paul Creason assisted by John Keith. April 5, 2012 Johny & Valentine Jones, Eleanor Wright, Lenice Matthiesen, Joe and Shirley Carmack assisted by Lera Warren. Treasurer s report and financial reports were reviewed by the elders. OLD BUSINESS Disaster Preparedness plans were reviewed and the Disaster Preparedness taskforce will be meeting in the near future. Members and friends of the church will be assigned to a group, so that all can be checked on when a disaster occurs. NEW BUSINESS Love Inc is having a Mini Golf Tournament and Silent Auction Saturday, May 12, 2012 to raise funds to help them carry on their important ministry which assists us in many ways. The elders approved placing the Plexiglas church in the narthex to receive monetary donations toward a hole sponsorship at the Tournament. The church will also receive advertisement for their donation of $ Approved running the Fifth Generation radio ad 5 times on Fridays, for 13 weeks, on KOMC FM. Branson. Mission: Day before Mother s Day, group from the church will take silk roses to women residing in the nursing home. All are invited to participate in the delivery. Personnel (Jim Berry; Howard Gathman) Evaluation of the pastor was reviewed and he was given a rating of 1.7, with a 1 being Exemplary performance and a 2 Exceeds performance, showing the Pastor on average exceeds the expectations set forth by the Church as viewed by 11 Elders and 1 Staff member. On motion by Jim Berry, seconded by Liz Rogers, be it resolved that Pastor Dennis Winzenried who began his pastorate at Community Presbyterian Church of Forsyth, Missouri on April 16, 2002 and was formally installed on June 8, 2002, be noted in the Book of the Session of said church as accomplishing much in the name of our Lord in, for, and within this community and this church, and is cherished by many for his friendly smile, his warm personality, his leadership and his love for his fellow man through Jesus Christ, our Savior. Therefore, let it be said and let it be written this day and in these minutes. Motion approved. The next stated meeting of the session will be Thursday, May 17, 2012 at 6:30 p.m. at the church. 2

Benevolence Fund Report: During April we helped 4 families: 1 with utilities, 1 with transportation, 1 with rent and 1 with a place to stay and a meal. If you would like to make a donation to the Benevolent Fund, please do so by marking your check special gift - benevolent fund. Those who receive our assistance greatly appreciate your gifts! THANK YOU!! A huge thank you to the volunteers who gave up a sunny Saturday recently to help paint and freshen up the church. More action shots are throughout the newsletter! 3

Echoes from the Choir Loft Happy May! Welcome back Esther! We have missed our Winter Texan. Things are busy up in the choir loft. We love to celebrated holidays with beautiful traditional music so we are learning some new special music for Mother s Day and Memorial Day. We are polishing up some old favorites to do in May as well. It isn t all work in the choir loft though. We had a fun party after choir on April 18 to celebrate Dennis s 10 anniversary with the church. Chris brought 2 giant cookies and lemonade and Dennis was presented with a gift to help with what he had lost while here. Be sure to ask him about his gift. 4

I remember how I used to feel this time of year as a child. School was almost out and I was getting a little antsy because I wanted to be able to do whatever I wanted to do everyday. That is not exactly how things worked out when I was a kid. Summers meant garden and in my family, the kids were responsible for planting, weeding, picking out the rocks (after all, it was in Missouri and rocks seem to grow in gardens) watering and harvesting. Mom would can all she needed and as a reward for all our hard work, we could sell what was left over when she had enough for the winter. All the neighbors waited for the harvest because they loved to buy the fresh vegetables. As the days get warmer, I seem to still have that desire to plant a garden. There is something about watching a garden grow that reminds us of God s amazing renewal. I am seeing that renewal in John Calvin Presbytery as well. There is a new energy present as we go into this new season. The structure which we adopted in March 2011 is beginning to thrive and I have seen churches become more and more connected in this past year. As a matter of fact, we are hosting an event specifically focused on helping us become more connected as people of God. This event will be held on Friday, September 21st and Saturday, September 22nd with Herb Codington as the facilitator and the topic will be developing missional church clusters. This event will begin on Friday evening and continue into Saturday. There will be opportunities to gather in groups and clusters during this event. More information will be published at a later date but we would like for you to put this on your calendars and plan to attend. It promises to be an awesome event. If your church is already involved in working with another church in mission, would you please let me know? We are constantly on the lookout for ways to make connections and if your church is already doing so, perhaps you can help us be more effective. My is pastoralpresbyter@gmail.com and my phone number is You can also call the Presbytery office at Have a great Easter Season. Susan Rosenbaum Just a reminder that the May meeting of the Presbyterian Women will be the annual birthday bash! This will be a salad luncheon so please bring a salad to contribute. The meeting is on Wednesday, May 16th, 1:30 pm We ll see you there! 5

Diabetes Focus Group The next monthly meeting of the Diabetes Focus Group will be on Monday, May 7th. Our speaker this month will be Robyn Hurst, owner of Vessels of Clay Yoga. She will address us on alternate nutrition ideas that can help us improve our blood sugar and overall health. 6
